TTITLE COVID-19 Situation Report SERIAL NUMBER 39 EPID-WEEK 19 DATE 10th – 16th May 2021

Highlights

• No new confirmed cases were reported within the week because the Biosafety Cabinet in the molecular laboratory developed a fault that affected testing of samples. • 110 new samples were taken across the LGAs within the reporting week. Number of samples pending in the laboratory are now 624 • Total number of confirmed cases as at 16th May 2021 remains 1,130 with 32 deaths

Epidemiological summary

As at 16th May 2021, 15,829 suspected cases have been reported out of which 1,130 were confirmed positive, 14,185 were found negative, three were inconclusive while 624 results remain pending. Majority of confirmed cases were from .

Coordination: • Coordination meetings now holding on Thursdays at the State level •

Surveillance: • 1,130 out of 15,939 samples tested are positive. Giving a positivity rate of 7.5% • 11.5% of confirmed cases are known contacts of previously confirmed cases • 5.4% of confirmed cases are health workers • 10 out of the 21 LGAs reported new cases in the reporting week.

Case Management • No active case is currently being followed up. • One suspected case is being investigated • No death was reported in the treatment facility within the last two weeks • A total of 32 fatalities associated with COVID-19 have been reported since outbreak. CFR= 3.0% POE • 2264 (1,302 inbound and 962 outbound) travelers were screened in Yola International Airport within the week • Volunteers working in border LGAs of Magadali, Toungo, Michika, , reported 25 suspected.

Laboratory • Sample testing was stalled because of a fault with the Biosafety Cabinet in the molecular laboratory • 110 samples were collected within the week • Samples still pending investigation are 624

Risk Communication/Social Mobilization

• Community Health Champions supported by WHO visited 1,260 households. 7,411 persons were reached. This number comprised of 1,710 men, 2,461 women, 1, 411 boys and 1,829 girls. • Broadcast of weekly Community Radio Program by Radio Fombina FM and Adamawa State Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio specifically on promoting compliance to safety protocols, voluntary testing, wearing facemask and handwashing is currently ongoing based on the following schedule: • Fombina FM Radio (FM 101.5): Thursday 10.30 – 11.30am (with repeat broadcast on Saturday, 12.00 – 1.00pm). • ABC Radio (AM 1440): Wednesday, 4.30 – 5.30pm (with repeat broadcast on Friday, 1.00 – 2.00pm). The Covid-19 centered community radio programming will run from weekly for four (4) months. • Ongoing daily broadcast of 10 jingles per day in Radio Nigeria Fombina FM, 10 jingles per day by Gotel Radio; 10 jingles per day by ABC Radio, 5 jingles per day by Pulaako FM and 5 TV jingles per day in Adamawa State Television.

Challenges • The Biosafety cabinet in the molecular laboratory developed a fault, therefore, samples could not be tested within the week • Over 700 samples are still pending investigation in the laboratory • Drop in sample collection yield. This may be due to the Ramadan fast. •

Next steps • Follow up with IHVN to send engineers to assess the extent of damage to the biosafety cabinet and for the repairs • Discuss with the NRL Abuja to arrange the shipment of samples from Yola to Abuja • Engage the volunteers on the field on strategies for improved yield of samples being collected
