COVER PROFILE Jim Richards 1961 Vauxhall Cresta Most of my life I’ve been a bit of a petrol head & a Ford man at heart. Ford represented the working class while GM represented the more affluent. When a Cresta won the first ‘Bathurst” production race (run at Philip Island, the first three years} I was very im- pressed. In the mid 80s I started looking for a “61 Cresta, I looked at many. In 1994 Brian Mallyon (a retired Pt Pirie plumber) advertised the one I purchased, a genuine low mileage in original condition. I was later to learn that it was a 1960 Cresta that won the first race (wrong again). In ‘61 a Cresta came in second. My Cresta is still all original & still goes like the clappers. Twenty four years after I purchased it a friend cleaned it inside & out & I had the pleasure of driving it to the Crystal Brook show for its first outing. I am still a Ford man at heart, but I can appreciate the great rivalry between Ford & . Pictured right the driver of the Vauxhall Cresta Frank Coad posing in a replica Cresta in which he won the Armstrong 500 event as it was first called. Some of the interesting facts taken from a newspaper article thanks to journalist Taylor Auerbach. When Frank Coad crossed the finish line in his Vauxhall Cresta on November 20th 1960 he had no idea he was entering sporting folklore. Frank was 84 when he was interviewed by Taylor prior to the 2014 Bathurst. Frank & his co-driver John Roxburgh won the race by four laps, they were dressed in normal clothes & even wore collars & ties. They had three pit stops & filled up the Vauxhall with four gallon petrol cans. To prepare for their history making event Frank & John booked the Phillip Island track two weeks before the race & completed a full 500 mile test run under race conditions. They were impressed with their efforts & results & “thought baring something stupid they had the race won, & they did.” Franks said the prize money they collected was enough to buy his wife & self a new lounge suite. Frank stated that in the weeks following their victory, Vauxhall Cresta’s sold out in all car shops around Melbourne. Jim Richards.

February 2019 Crank Talk 3

Hello members, Welcome to another new club year. I hope everyone has been keeping as cool as possible in all this extreme heat we have been having lately. There has not been any club activities as yet for 2019 but there is a lot coming up, one of the more important events will be the yesteryear day on the 5th of May, this will include Stationary Engines, Commercial vehicles (such as trucks, utes, tractors etc). There will be on the day, but we ask that vehicles on display please remain on the grounds until around 2pm for insurance reasons. Also, we would like to point out that this is a club event and there will be help required from you members to make it a success. I’ll remind you the cars will be there for display and registration and log checks which is a huge cost saving bonus of being a member, so I think it is not too much to ask for some assistance on behalf of the club in return. Also there has been some confusion about the date which subs are to be paid by, these can be paid anytime from now on but MUST be paid before the AGM, any members not paid by the 31st of May will be using club registered vehicles ILLEGALLY, and it is the clubs duty to report this for cancellation of the club rego, this is law not our rules.

Anyway, on a happier note let’s all enjoy the new club year and I’ll look forward to catch- ing up soon. Paul

Now for a bit of fun!!! Your Yearly Dementia Test (only 4 questions)

Yep, it's that time of year again for us to take our annual senior citizen test. Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of the muscles. As we grow older, it's important to keep mentally alert. If you don't use it, you lose it! Here is a very private way to gauge how your memory compares to your last test. Some may think it is too easy, but the ones with memory problems may have difficulty.

Take this test to determine if you're losing it or not.

The spaces below are so you don't see the answers until you've made your answer. OK, relax, clear your mind and begin.

#1. What do you put in a toaster?

Answer: 'bread.' If you said 'toast', just give up now and go do something else. And, try not to hurt yourself.

If you said, bread, go to Question #2.

# 2. Say 'silk' five times. Now spell 'silk.' What do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said 'milk,' don't attempt the next question. Your brain is already over-stressed and may even overheat. Content yourself with reading more appropriate literature such as Women's Weekly or Auto World. However, if you did say 'water', proceed to Question #3.

# 3. If a red house is made from red bricks and a blue house is made from blue bricks and a pink house is made from pink bricks and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a green house made from?

Answer: Greenhouses are made from glass. If you said 'green bricks', why are you still reading this??? PLEASE, go lie down! But, if you said 'glass,' go on to Question #4.

# 4. Do not use a calculator for this: You are driving a bus from New York City to Philadelphia . In Staten Island , 17 people got on the bus. In New Brunswick , 6 people get off the bus and 9 people get on. In Windsor , 2 people get off and 4 get on. In Trenton , 11 people get off and 16 people get on. In Bristol , 3 people get off and 5 people get on. And, in Camden , 6 people get off and 3 get on.

You then arrive at Philadelphia Station. Without going back to review, how old is the bus driver Don't you remember your own age?!?! It was YOU driving the bus! If you pass this along to your friends, pray they do better than you. PS: 95% of people fail most of the questions!

Oil Can Harry

A jockey is about to enter a race on a new horse. The horse’s trainer meets him before the race & instructs him with these remarks “All you have to remember with this horse is that every time you approach a jump, you have to shout ‘Alley Ooop’ in his ear. You do that & you’ll be fine & we will win.” The jockey thinks the trainer is nuts but promises to shout the command. The race begins & they approach the first hurdle. The jockey ignores the trainers ridiculous advise & the horse crashes through the centre of the jump. They carry on & approach the second hurdle. The jockey somewhat embarrassed, whispers in the horse’s ear Alley Ooop. The same thing happens the horse crashes through the second jump. At the third hurdle the jockey thinks “this is no good I have to do it and yells ’Alley Ooop’ with great gusto in the horses ear.” Sure enough the horse sails beautifully over the hur- dle with problems. This continues for the rest of the race but due to the earlier problems the horse finishes third. The trainer is fuming & asks the jockey what went wrong. “Nothing is wrong with me its this B….. Horse. What is he deaf or something.” The trainer replies “Deaf?, Deaf?, He’s not deaf. He’s blind.”

A hotel bar was that sure that their head barman was the strongest man in the district they offered a $1000.00 bet. The barman would squeeze as lemon till all the juice ran in- to a glass, & then hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze another drop from the lemon would win the money. Many people had tried over time weightlifters pu- gilists etc. but none had been successful. One day this little scrawny man, wearing dark rimmed glasses ,polyester suit, & said in a squeaky voice. “I’ll take that bet” After the laughter had died down , the barman said ok grabbed a lemon & squeezed away. He then handed the wrinkled remains to the little man. Then the laughter turned to silence as the little man clenched his fist around the lemon & six drops fell, into the glass. As the crowd cheered the barman paid out the $1000.00 & asked the little man, "What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, weightlifter or what?”. The little bloke replied“ I work for the tax office”.
