Andy Grammer is a Singer/Songwriter from Los Angeles with a bent toward soulful, R&B-infused pop. He is all about inspiring and empowering the world by communicating his truths through his music. The first male pop star in a decade since John Mayer to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio on his first two singles, Grammer has taken the music world by storm with a succession of anthemic pop hits. “The Good Parts” is his third full-length studio album. Multi-platinum performer Andy Grammer is a gifted pop artist and songwriter with a bent toward contemporary soul and pop. A native of Los Angeles, Grammer is the son of children’s music artist Red Grammer, and grew up in New York State. He later returned to California to earn his B.A. in music industry studies from California State University, Northridge. While attending school, Grammer began performing around Los Angeles and even spent time as a street performer to help publicize himself. Higher-profile gigs followed, and Grammer eventually signed with S- Curve Records. He released his self-titled debut album in 2011. That summer, he supported both Natasha Bedingfield and Colbie Caillat on tour. Two years later, he released the EP Crazy Beautiful. In 2015 Grammer returned with his full-length sophomore album, , featuring the singles “Back Home” and “Honey, I’m Good,” the latter of which reached number nine on the Billboard charts. (It also helped him become the first male pop artist since John Mayer to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio on his first two singles.) After a 2015 stint as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, Grammer released another single, “Good to Be Alive (Hallelujah),” which became his second consecutive hit to be certified gold. Released in the summer of 2016, the single “” also performed well, reaching over 250 million streams and receiving platinum status. In 2017 Grammer delivered another single, “Give Love,” featuring LunchMoney Lewis. The disc features 13 stellar performances, all of which Grammer is credited with co-writing. Bookended with singles "Smoke Clears" and "Give Love", the album features stellar grooves and the positive vibes that Grammer is known for, but there are plenty of tunes which celebrate the complexity of being a human being. Life is messy seems to be the message of some of these selections. On the stellar "Workin' On It", Grammer opines "we all got monsters that don't see the daylight, skeletons you're hiding ain't going to leave overnight", concluding that the best we can do is to be "workin' on it". The title song "The Good Parts" actually refers to the failures and faults that we hide deep inside, insisting that we need to be vulnerable enough to not "leave the good parts out". "Freeze" celebrates the good times in a relationship that feel so special you don't want to slip away and would freeze in time if only you could. "Fresh Eyes" is also featured, a song that celebrates long term relationships and learning to appreciate a partnership anew. It broke some Internet records as a single and is one of Grammer's chestnuts. "Spaceship" is a tender, touching love poem to Grammer's daughter when she was still in the womb, with whimsical lyrics such as "I'm staring at a screen of your beating heart, she been in the lab cooking you up, even if you don't know it yet, somebody loves you, we're making plans, waiting for your spaceship to land." The tune is funky and happy. The tender ballad "Always", is another father/daughter love song, with a beautiful soaring melody and heartfelt lyrics. "Your clothes, your shoes and your best friends, they ain't gonna stay the same. Your reckless years and your mistakes I promise you they fade away, you and me will be always." "Grown Ass Man Child" celebrates the little boy that Grammer still can summon from within himself and is probably the album's funkiest track, as if Grammer let the Ohio Players or Kool and the Gang inhabit his body for a three minute or so romp. "85" channels Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al" with Simonesque vocals and the message of Billy Joel's "Anthony's Song" about not living to 85 and regretting spending your life chasing the almighty dollar. It is one of the strongest tracks and a standout. Also in Paul Simon territory are the vocals on what may be my favorite by a hair, the excellent "Civil War" in which Grammer questions God "why did you make me if you always knew I'd be a civil war", referring to the constant pull of good and bad and positive and negative influences that are the lot of human beings. It is an exceptional song, executed flawlessly. "Grow" exhorts the listener to "love yourself and be kind, water your soul, celebrate, find your light, it don't matter who you are, where you're going, young or old, we all know, we gotta grow." "Smoke Clears" is another Grammer classic, the current single, celebrating the rewards of a long term relationship, while "This Ain't Love" is Grammer admitting he doesn't do casual dating or sex well but believes in holding out for the person who holds the promise of true love. One of my all time Grammer favorites with one of the best lines in a pop song ever is "Give Love" with the stellar line "my mother was a sunshine soldier, every day was a dream come true, she said that we were blessed by the breath deep inside us, she could make the colors in the sky turn blue." Featuring the rap of hip hop star Lunch Money Lewis, "Give Love" is the perfect upbeat ending to an album that celebrates both the positive and harsh aspects of existence. It is an album that deserves a thousand and more good listens! Bruce A. Potts, Amazon. 01. Smoke Clears [0:02:59.04] 02. Freeze [0:03:07.54] 03. The Good Parts [0:03:39.35] 04. Not surprisingly, the disco-country romp of "Honey, I'm Good" pigeonholed Andy Grammer as a novelty act, but much of the rest of its accompanying 2014 album, Magazines or Novels, showcased an adult alternative singer/songwriter who favored pop anthems and atmospheric chillout -- a vibe reminiscent of John Mayer as produced by Ryan Tedder. With a global smash under his belt, Grammer decided to capitalize on these moodier, mature aspects on The Good Parts, his long-awaited 2017 successor to Magazines or Novels. The first two thirds of The Good Parts crawl by, sometimes working up a little bit of soulful simmer but usually maintaining a meditative midtempo that's all the better to indicate that Grammer isn't a goofball. Occasionally, this music can sound like Maroon 5 -- particularly on "Spaceship" -- but Adam Levine never obsessed over entering his thirties the way that Grammer does. He returns to this topic over and over, finally cutting loose on the absurd "Grown Ass Man Child," a bit of silly funk that arrives too late to save a drowning album. By the time "Grown Ass Man Child" appears in the final third of The Good Parts, the album has grown stultifying and stuffy, a record that intends to be introspective but merely sounds sleepy -- a perhaps inevitable result of a one-hit wonder intent on proving his artistry. In the beginning, there was "What's Going On", one of the greatest soul records ever, released 50 years ago. This is the story of how Marvin Gaye changed the history of the Motown label and of popular music in the 1970s. Within the family tree of funk, Prince Rogers Nelson, who passed away in April 2016, was a branch all of his own. In the course of a career spanning almost forty years, he managed to blend together the heritage of the founding fathers (James Brown, Sly Stone and George Clinton) with other influences, from rock'n'roll to electronica to jazz. He produced an exuberant, attention-grabbing groove, and his star shone brightest between 1978 and 1988… It's not easy to elbow your way through the macho Music City scene, the birthplace of country music, when you're a woman. Over the years, some of them have nevertheless managed to shift lines and attitudes, like these ten pioneers and revolutionaries who have put – even stamped – their boots on Nashville's table.
