BENJAMIN WALLFISCH COMPOSER Composer of Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, David F. Sandberg's box office #1 film Shazam!, Andy Muschietti's IT and IT Chapter Two, the most successful horror film of all time and co-composer of Denis Villeneuve's acclaimed Blade Runner: 2049 (with Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer), Benjamin Wallfisch has worked on over 75 feature films and has received Golden Globe®, BAFTA®, 2x GRAMMY® and Emmy® nominations. Projects include Neil Marshall's Hellboy, Academy Award Best Picture nominee, HiDDen Figures directed by Ted Melfi (in collaboration with Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer) and David F. Sandberg's box office hits Annabelle: Creation and Lights Out. On the invitation of Zimmer, he wrote 'Variation 15', based on Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations, for Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk. In recent years, Benjamin has also scored Gore Verbinski's A Cure For Wellness, the Steven Spielberg produced short film Auschwitz, directed by James Moll, King Of Thieves, starring Michael Caine and directed by James Marsh; and Steven Knight's Serenity, starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. He also scored Hostile Planet, a six-part series for National Geographic, garnering him a 2019 Emmy® nomination. After graduating from London's Royal Academy of Music in 2002, Benjamin made his scoring debut at the age of 24, scoring Thomas Vinterberg and Lars von Trier's Dear WenDy resulting in his first nomination as ‘Discovery of the Year’ in the 2005 World Soundtrack Awards. His subsequent score, for Rupert Wyatt’s suspense thriller The Escapist earned him his first of two nominations at the Ivor Novello Awards and his second nomination in the World Soundtrack Awards. With over 25 albums of his music released to date on labels including Deutsche Grammophon and Epic Records, Benjamin has performed live in over 100 concerts worldwide, leading orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony at venues including the Hollywood Bowl, Sydney Opera House and Royal Festival Hall. He has collaborated, recorded and performed his music with artists including Lang Lang, Herbie Hancock and Yuja Wang, and has over 50 concert music commissions to his name. He has also collaborated three times with Pharrell Williams, including a live performance at the 2015 GRAMMY Awards and recently partnered with Adele, arranging her 2017 GRAMMY performance of George Michael's 'Fast Love'. A member of the BAFTA® Academy since 2009, Benjamin was appointed an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London in 2014. In 2017, he was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.     Nature of Elliot Goldenthal's Music

    The Nature of Elliot Goldenthal’s Music & A Focus on Alien 3 (& other scores) There is “something different” about Elliot Goldenthal’s music. There is also considerable brain and brawn in Elliot Goldenthal’s film music. His style is difficult to label because his approach is so eclectic depending on the project. Sometimes I feel he is fundamentally an independent art-house composer (perhaps Frida, say, and The Good Thief) although he can demonstrate thrilling orchestral power in scores such as Sphere and the Batman movies that I personally quite enjoyed. Overall he shows a Late Modernist temperament, musically an American Bohemian, but nevertheless grounded somewhat in the mainstream traditions (certainly at least traditional notation). His polystylism (eclectism) is a postmodern characteristic. An excellent example of polystylism is his score for Titus (and Good Thief to a lesser extent, and even an example or two in Alien 3) with the diverse or even odd juxtaposition of genres (symphonic-classical, rock, etc.) that represents in one score the type of projects he collectively undertook over the last fifteen years or so. There is not one clear-cut musical voice, in other words, but a mixture or fusion of different styles. It is, in part, his method of organization. Loosely speaking, his music is avant-garde but certainly not radically so--as in the case of John Cage with his aleatoric (random) music and quite non-traditional notation (although Goldenthal’s music can at select times be aleatoric in effect when he utilizes electronic music, quarter-toning, and other devices). He is experimental and freewheeling but certainly this tendency is not overblown and expanded into the infinite! He definitely takes advantage of what technology has to offer (MIDI applications, timbre sampling, synthesizer usage, etc.) but does not discard what traditions are useful for him to express his vision of musical art.
