This might be the everyday meanings that humans attach to places bound up with a sense of identity and belonging. It also extends to ways that meanings of place might be created, such as through place making and marketing. Representations of places are important because of the way in which they shape peoples' actions and behaviours, and those of businesses, institutions and governments. Representations also provide a reference point for people's sense of identity, underpinning their attachments to place, particularly in times of change. Attention to meaning highlights the processes of representation through which places are depicted, variously by external agencies and by those who live in them. The meanings and identities ascribed to a place may also be related to its function, both social and economic, in the present and in the past. Places can have multiple meanings and identities, reflecting different perceptions and perspectives. Students should select one of the following topics through which to address the concepts of meaning and representation as applied to place: Place making and marketing, drawing on examples such as regional development agencies, tourist marketing, and property marketing materials. -

They want a violent and bloody conflagration on the streets. They want to … cause anarchy.”1 Abstract The paper will offer an account of how political activists are (mis)constructed as “folk devils” through an examination of recent media coverage in the UK and Czech Republic. It will seek to show how their construction as violent criminals and dangerous anarchists has influenced the treatment of those involved in protests by public authorities in the UK and Prague. The paper will also offer, in juxtaposition to this representation of the current anti-capitalism movement, a discussion of the accounts of activists themselves. In particular it examines the activists’ own perceptions of their engagement in the global social movement against capitalism. The paper is based on evidence derived from preliminary findings from interdisciplinary research into global social movements, and in particular the protests against the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Prague in September 2000. 1 The Telegraph, 18/2/01 2 Introduction This paper argues that we are currently witnessing the development of a new type of folk devil. Harri Veivo Cahiers de la Nouvelle Europe No. 16 2012 Kunst und Kamp, poster, April, 1986 Inherent in the notion of an avant-garde is the irreversibility of its measure of progress. The vector of a cultural effort need be neither straight nor singular nor without setbacks for this to be asserted: to occupy a position that has been surpassed is to not be avant-garde. It is stunning the degree to which this logic is disregarded by fans. Art historians can hardly be faulted for keeping warm the corpses of their favorite moments. It is a mortuary profession, and for many sufficiently well paid to keep up their confidence that scholars are anyway smarter than the artists they study; “We’ll be the judge of what’s dead and when.” More charitably, taking scholars as journalists, there are new sightings of the avant-garde to report every day, so we should expect the glorified blogging of peer-review journals on the topic to continue. And here, too, there is no foul. What approaches the kind of tragedy worth regretting, however, is that so many people of such lively genius should suffer their intellectual enthusiasms to be diverted, and secured off the track of any real cultural agency. The main veins of avant-garde activity in the European sphere, the now canonical cycle Futurism-Dada- Surrealism-Etcetera, gambled art and literature’s stakes in the centuries-old entitlement for a new chance at impacting the human situation. -

Acknowledgements I remember I was quite shocked when, one of the very first times I went to the MTG, Perfecto Herrera suggested that I work on the automatic identification of versions of musical pieces. I had played versions (both amateur and pro- fessionally) since I was 13 but, although being familiar with many MIR tasks, I had never thought of version identification before. Furthermore, how could they (the MTG people) know that I played song versions? I don’t think I had told them anything about this aspect... Before that meeting with Perfe, I had discussed a few research topics with Xavier Serra and, after he gave me feedback on a number of research proposals I had, I decided to submit one related to the exploitation of the temporal information of music descriptors for music similarity. Therefore, when Perfe suggested the topic of version identification I initially thought that such a suggestion was not related to my proposal at all. -

Writers today increasingly deploy digital and "musical" techniques such as sampling and mixing to share and transform information and ideas, and I look to diverse rhetorical traditions for clues to a digital pedagogy. I select from primary and secondary source materials— Ancient Greek musical practice, Indian Tala, disciplines of Yoga, global polyrhythmic traditions—as I seek to formulate a theory and pedagogy of "wiki" space. Students and teachers seeking to compose and dwell in the densely interconnected space of digital ecologies, I argue, can learn much from the creative and rhetorical practices found in interactive communities of sound and music today, which form a musical, technological, and rhythmic archive for composers training in the art of rhetoric. My archive suggests rhetorical practices of "rhythm," a long neglected rhetorical effect, are crucial to techniques for navigating the assemblages of technology and community that articulate our classrooms and workplaces today. -

However, journalistic coverage of mediA fandom cAn be misinformed and include condescending framing. In order to remedy negatively biAsed framing seen in journalistic reporting on fandom, I wrote my own long form feAture showing the modern stAte of FAndom based on the generation of lAte millenniAl women who engaged in fandom between the eArly age of the Internet and today. This piece is mAinly focused on the modern experiences of women in fandom spaces and how they balAnce a lifelong connection to fandom, professional and personal connections, and ongoing issues they experience within fandom. My study is also contextualized by my studies in the contemporary history of mediA fan culture in the Internet age, beginning in the 1990’s And to the present day.
