36 Annual Northern California Area EMMY® Awards Were Presented Saturday Evening, May 12 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco Updated; 6/13/07 36th Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY® AWARDS PRESENTED th th The 36 Annual Northern California Area EMMY® Awards were presented Saturday evening, May 12 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The Emmy® Award honors excellence in all fields of television production. For the second year the Academy presented station awards in three categories. The Station Excellence went to KGO-TV/DT, Valari Staab, President/General Manager; News Excellence, KNTV NBC 11 News: Covering the Bay Area and Beyond, Jim Sanders, Vice President of News; (both also won last year). Community Service had two winners, Años Después ¿Estamos Preparados?, KDTV 14, Mahelda Rodriguez, Producer, and CBS 13/CW 31 Cares, KOVR 13, Diana Penna, Director, Special Station Community Projects. The Evening Newscast-Large Market recipient was the KPIX CBS 5, San Francisco for the 5PM News. The Evening Newscast-Medium Market went to Action News Live at Six, Fresno’s KFSN ABC 30. Excellence in Daytime Newscasts Emmy® Awards went to Bay Area Today at 10 AM, KNTV NBC 11, Large Market; KSEE News at 4 PM AM, KSEE 24, Medium Market and KSBW Action News Midday, KSBW, Small Market. Evening and Daytime Newscasts are the only categories that are tiered by market size. Only three individuals took home three statues each: Anna Werner and Jeff Harris from KPIX CBS 5 and Gerson Sanchez, KDTV/KFSF. The total of 192 statues went to 162 individuals this year. KNTV NBC 11 was the top station winner with 14 awards followed by KPIX CBS 5 with 10; KUVS Univision 19 in Sacramento had eight. This year Spanish language was judged separately by other Spanish peer judges, accounting for an increase from one last year to 14 this year. The Emmy® is awarded for outstanding achievement in Television by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. San Francisco/Northern California is one of the twenty chapters awarding regional Emmys®. Northern California is composed of television and cable stations from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries were aired during the 2006 calender year. 930 entries were received, in 63 categories, 257 were nominated and 80 receive the Emmy® statuette. The ballots were tallied by the accounting firm of Spalding & Company of San Francisco. The Board of Governors’ Service Medallion was presented by chapter president Lynn R Friedman to our Trustee, Activities Chair and Past President, Cynthia Zeiden. Four $3,000 Television Academy scholarships were awarded for Television Production to Peter Jordan, Stanford University; The Rigo Chacon Reporting Scholarship, underwritten by Abrazos & Books, went to Brian Pollack, University of California, Berkeley; Videography to Alan Ransil, Stanford University. The Thomas Drayton Minority Scholarship underwritten by KTXL Fox 40, went to Oyundary (Daria) Tsagaan, University of California. Berkeley. Following the awards ceremony the over six hundred guests moved next door to the Exploratorium for a gala dinner and party with dancing to the “Masterpiece” Band.
