4 Dear Marist T17-w 7 An enthusiastic team of dedicated parents put together a fun filled fete day f r students and visitors on Friday 30'h March. The fete was given a slight face lift this year with the introduction of some new stalls such as horrendous wounds, arm plasters, kiss-a -pig competition and surprise bag, whilst retaining the tried and true stalls such as the chocolate wheel, cakes/sweets, jumping castle, lucky j ms and water slide. The kiss-a-pig competition was a quirky idea that had students placing money in jars. Staff and students who consented to kissing a pig on fete day had a jar with their photo on it circulated around the school. The jar with the most money by 1pm on fete day was the lucky person to kiss Wodney the pig. The honours went to Mr Ireland. Wodney was to visit Marist in February as a special guest at the school assembly. Unfortunately things went horrendously awry when Wodney escaped from the transporting vehicle. He had a wonderful time exploring the environs of Marist completely oblivious to the mayhem he was causing. If it weren't for the agility of Mr Pearce and Mr Luck, Wodney would most likely be still on the run. Pig antics aside the fete raised $ I 2, 730.22.

Over 150 fete sponsorship letters were sent to local businesses. The response was overwhelming. The Parents and Friends' Committee rwishes to acknowledge and thank these businesses. The Parents and Friends' secretary Julie Barnett and I, represented Marist Regional College at the Catholic Schools Parents and Friends conference held at MacKillop College, Hobart on 28' and 29" April. The theme for the conference was the changing nature of parent engagement and involvement in Catholic education. Presentations were given by Mr Terry O'Connell, OAM, Australian Director of Real Justice and Mr Andrew Mullins, Principal of Redfield College, Dural, NSW. Restorative or Real Justice is about addressing wrong doings using a structured format so that the offender understands how their actions have impacted on the victim and decide how best to restore the harm. This is a collaborative process. Mr Andrew Mullins is the principal of a secondary boys college of 500 students. The school believes parents are the primary educators of their children. Several initiatives have been adopted to assist parents with their parenting role. For example, father/son camps are organised by the school. It is an expectation that all involved attend. The Year 10 dinner was held on Friday 9 November. The many positive comments made by students on the night was a testament to the thought and organisational skill placed into the evening by Mrs Wendy Horniblow, the Year 10 Coordinator and Mrs Rosalie Nayler, the Parents and Friends' treasurer. Parents who donated food, assisted with food preparation and cleaning up throughout the day and evening contributed to a very special inhouse event. Yours in faith, Mrs Tess McDonagh Maris,. 8 Student Committee Reports

Community Report

Your Community Committee of 2007, consisting of Alex McKenzie, as Head of the Committee and Bryce Clarke, Jordan Abell and Georgina Ridge were devoted to ensuring that Marist Regional College continued to be an enjoyable, inspiring, spirited and fulfilling place to be. Earlier in the year, we sat down as a committee and decided upon a mission statement for our term in office and hopefully for future Community Committees to uphold as well. Our mission statement read:

"We aim to set a benchmark of involvement throughout the school community and show commitment to the enhancement of pride and spirit within our school through participation and constant support through every avenue of College life."

We believe our role, through our mission statement, involved the following key objectives: Becoming an approachable and well received group of servant leaders within our College. Recognising the outstanding efforts made by students towards enhancing and maintaining spirit and pride within the culture of the College Community and finally, Assisting teachers and students to bridge the gap of communication and hold events that create a sense of true companionship and solidarity throughout all Grades, sports and other Cultural and Academic activities.

We endeavour to uphold our three points of reference so that we may continue to set a precedence of excellence for future appointed servant leaders in our College.

The Community Committee, has had an exciting and inevitably hectic final year at Marist. From organising successful socials and the Student Leadership Assembly to the new SRC Awards entitled The Sister Ursula Frayne Awards for Actively Upholding College Values and the largest activity on our College feast day, we have encountered a number of hurdles as a team and also as individuals in order to bring the College Community some great, student run events. Through personal experiences of effort, perseverance and teamwork, whilst attending Marist over the past 6 years, we in the Community Committee have come to the realisation that pride and spirit can bond with the true values of Marist Regional College in order to join all divisions within our school into a body of enthusiastically spirited staff and students. We look forward to seeing future Community Committees upholding the College values to further enhance the culture here at Marist.

Alex McKenzie, Head of Community Committee

Cultural Committee Report 2007

This year has been a very exciting and successful year for the Cultural Committee of this year's SRC, consisting of Sam Wilkinson, Jordie Draper, Sophie Johnstone and myself, Amy House. We started the year by providing music at both the Junior and Senior Swimming Carni- vals, which had not been attempted for many years. This turned out to be a great success, livening up the atmosphere of the carnivals and providing extra entertainment during the days. Our next big event was helping organise the school fete, with us participating in the live entertainment throughout the day, but also helping run the Ghost Tunnel, an annual SRC event.

Our major event for the year was in the organising of this year's Arts Festival, Marist Is Art. We, along with a large group of staff, led by Mrs Thomas, formed the organising Committee for this huge week of events. Although this was the first year the Festival has been held at school, many months of hard work paid off and the event proved to be a great success, leading the way for many great Arts Festivals to come. This was also the first year students have been on the organising committee of either a Festival or Musical, and was a fantastic expe rience which we hope future Culture Committees can also be exposed to.

Our final event for the year was providing music for the Athletics Carnival, which was held in early October. The music proved to be success- ful, greatly adding to the atmosphere of the day.

All in all, 2007 has been a very successful year for the Cultural Committee. Many thanks must go to Sam, Jordie and Sophie, who have put in much hard work throughout the year to ensure that everything we have undertaken has turned out as well as it did.

Amy House, Head of Cultural Committee

9 Kalori 2007 The Narcombe Centre

10 It was at the request of the Archbishop of Hobart, Rev. Guilford Young, in the mid 1950s that Fr. James Harcombe led the construction of a Marist school to cater for the growing, educational needs of the Burnie community. Following the opening of the school in 1959, the intention of the school was to add a gymnasium to its grounds, however, it was not until nearly fifty six years later that the project to build a new gymnasium commenced.

This long awaited structure with a total floor space of 2000 square metres, was opened to the school and wider community by Archbishop Adrian Doyle on March 156. In the recognition and appreciation of Fr. Harcombe's foresight and dedication, the new gymnasium now carries his name and is an amazing new educational asset to the College and broader community.

It includes flexible learning and entertainment areas, as well as a double gymnasium, fitness room, staffing and storage spaces. The facility is often used for school gatherings and assemblies, with retractable seating which has the potential to seat at least 900. Installed are professional sound and presentation systems to stretch the centre's function beyond that of a sporting nature.

It provides wonderful opportunities for students at the College to engage in sporting activities, despite inclement weather, and create links with sporting or community groups to make this a truly unique and beneficial venue.

26 Fifteen Year 10 students took part in the Peer Skills Program for 2007. The students were nominated by their peers as being people who were friendly, trustworthy and approachable. We attended a two day training program, which was held at the Burnie Parish Centre. The program was facilitated by Jenny Garnsey and Cherie Neilson from the Youth Health Team.

The program incorporated a number of different activities aimed at developing an understanding of skills that are important to being a peer helper. These include active listening and responding, problem solving, confidentiality and its limits, and self care. The program was a fun and valuable experience, teaching us the importance of youth health and well-being in our society. We look forward to being able to put our knowledge and skills into practice throughout next year.

Thank you to the Parents and Friends Association for continuing to generously fund this worthwhile program. Thanks also to Mrs Jenny Garnsey and Mrs Cherie Neilson (Youth Health Team), Mrs Wendy Horniblow (Year 10 Coordinator) and Miss Tamika Costello (College Counsellor), for their help and support of this program.

Step to the Future - Youth Forum

Throughout the first term 5 students consisting of: Jack Ball Smith, Georgie Ridge, Emma Wilson, Katie Ling. Alex McKenzie and a supervising teacher, Miss Scharvi were a part of organising the Tasmanian leg of the Step to the Future (STTF) Youth Forum. This Forum travels nationally, and Launceston was chosen this year to hold the event for Tasmania. Marist, along with other North and North-West schools, was invited to take part in organising this event.

STTF is a quest to inspire all students to take that extra stride toward their future. Through the words of inspirational speakers STTF gives students hope, laughter and the tools to gain in confidence and decision making.

As students from a regional area we were excited to help organise an event that could reach out to those who may have never experienced a forum such as STTF. Our role included drafting a list of prospective speakers who we hoped could inspire students, and each Committee member also played an active role on the day by introducing the speakers. We found that not only attending the event but organising it could help students to gain confidence, and as such we urge students to take part next year. The organisers of the STTP Youth Forum. edieval Day capped off a considerable term for the Year 8s. Students had been engrossed in learning the ins and outs, power struggles, legendary figures and the highly amusing "gross" bits of the medieval period. To celebrate a term of hard work and horrible history the year M8s enjoyed a medieval celebration day. All students were dressed in medieval heraldry colours to represent their class group. In addition to this, there was an assortment of other medieval characters including: knights, princesses, monks, witches, jesters, kings and even a horse!

The Year 8s participated in a range of activities throughout the day including: archery, flags, the "late for the ball" race, tug of war and a medieval scavenger hunt. The highlight of the day being a sumptuous medieval feast prepared by Mrs Carbonari and her band of merry men... and women, namely the Senior College Tourism Studies class and a few willing Year 9 students. Year 8s are to be congratulated on embracing all that Medieval Day had to offer and making the day a positive experience for both staff and students. In particular, I would like to extend my gratitude to Brendan Schmidt, Janette Carbonari, the Year 8 ELs team, Senior College tourism studies students and the Year 9 cooks. Without your contribution of time and energy the day would not have been such a success.

The Hospitality class have had another productive year. Students started the year with a busy schedule. The opening of the Harcombe Centre was an outstanding success. Students catered for over 200 guests. This function gave the students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in producing finger foods and customer service. Hospitality is one of the core values of our school which was reflected in their friendly and professional service. Our trip to Hobart earlier in the year with the Tourism class gave the students an insight into the hospitality industry, with tours of the IXL Art Gallery Hotel and the Casino. As a group the students have catered for many other functions throughout the year; Year 7 Welcome, a Business Breakfast and the Science Conference. At the Arts Festival students catered for a cocktail party and a dinner on the same night. Once again I would like to thank all the businesses in the community which have supported us throughout the year. A special thank you to Nigel St John from the Wynyard Bottle Shop and Andy Engwerda from National Foods for their generous donations for the Arts Festival. I wish the Year 12 students the best of luck for the future and Year 11 students continuing on at Marist, you will have plenty of opportunity to demonstrate your hospitality next year.

Janette Carbonari Hospitality Teacher

The Industrial Trades Program continued to provide a great opportunity for Year 11 and 12 students wishing to explore pathways in the Automotive and Carpentry trades.

This year the program offered off- the - job training at Burnie TAFE and MRC; industry visits to a range Of automotive workshops; automotive work placements; certificates in Workplace First Aid and Fire Safety and TAFE I supervised work placement at MRC. All of these activities were invaluable for students who are actively seeking to enter the workforce.

The program was again a great success with the feedback from employers and TAFE being extremely positive with regard to the conduct, progress and application of our students.

Obviously the program cannot take place without the cooperation of a wide range of employers and we thank the following employers for the cooperation: Fairford, William Adams, North-West Truck Centre, David White Automotive, Burnie Exhaust and Service, Good Year Auto Care, Terrylands Service Station, Roger Carter Mechanical Repairs, Fahey Motors. April this year, the Senior College Tourism, Hospitality and Public Relations classes went on an educational excursion to Hobart. The four day trip consisted of visits to various places; among them were visits to the Henry Jones Art Hotel and Moorilla Estate which enabled us to experience the beautiful food, wine and art. We also dined at a diverse range of places such as an Italian and Thai restaurants as well as the Grand Chancellor and Fish Frenzy eateries. Shopping was also a highlight of the trip along with our tour of the Cadbury's chocolate factory. We also had a tour of Mures Seafood which is located on the wharf near Hobart's CBD and a walk around Sullivan's Cove. Night activities included going the cinema and participating in laser shooting at Zone 3. One of the highlights of the trip was the visit the students made to Channel 7's Sunrise crew, who were conducting a live broadcast from Salamanca Place on our final morning in Hobart. *

Not wanting to go I reluctantly climbed aboard the train while yelling a tearful farewell to my parents.

As the train started to pick up a little bit of speed and smoke was billowing from the funnel, I caught a glimpse of a plane flying low above. The air raid sirens came then, which I could hear over the loud noise of the train and the high powered engines of the jet. I looked back to see just a smoking fire hole where my parents had been only seconds before. I started screaming so loud I could hear nothing else. But the train did not stop.

While we began with a group of about eight Year 8 and 9 students, this eventually reduced to a team of four dedicated Year 9s.

Panasonic provided the school with some essential equipment, necessary for making the video. All we needed to start providing were the ideas. We did not realise that it was our initial indecision about which topic to choose, which would eventually provide the basis for our story.

Titled "Ideas Anyone?", the students ventured to Devonport to explore the plight of our native, freshwater lobsters; frolicked their way up The Nut in Stanley to investigate the devastating effect of gorse; and finally they put on their ghost-busting personas to explore the darker secrets of the Burnie Civic Centre.

We submitted our film for judging in July, knowing that each of the films would be scrutinised by some of Australia's most active members of the filmmaking community. These judges included surf film maker Jack McCoy and Clayton Jacobsen, the director of the Aussie hit"Kenny". We eventually received the news that we were in fact a state finalist.

The group travelled to Sydney on the 17'h September for the New Vision Awards which were held at Luna Park. Having enjoyed a few of the rides, we watched as school after school were presented for various awards across many different categories. Eventually we heard our school announced as the State Winner in the Secondary Section. While the major award went to Melbourne High School, we were very proud of our students who presented themselves very well and congratulated the eventual winners at the conclusion of the night.

Special thanks to Jillian Hastings for her time and support, the parents of our participants and the filmmakers themselves. We look forward to what 2008's film might have in store!

Life was so simple...

When Sundays were spent with families, playing in the park When it didn't matter how you dressed or how you wore your hair Time was spent in the yard, running through the grass The Macarena was the only way to dance When friends stuck by you, through every fall and crash Yo-yos were the only accessory - no bracelets, rings or clips When cops and robbers and hide and seek were the only way to play Before magazines Before sms Before play station Before I realised I would miss it all When life was so simple, just doing your favourite things.

45 44" . f :„.• d„ .1 . • ..t. t The Landcare group has continued to work hard this year.

Our first big event for the year was organising for the school to participate for the first time, in the schools event for Clean Up Australia Day. It was fantastic to have everyone involved, to have the support and assistance of the SRC and to hear everyone enjoying themselves. The grounds certainly looked a lot cleaner afterwards.

Our second major event was Schools National Tree Day. We used this event as an opportunity to extend the garden bed beside the walkway to the McAuley Wing. Various Year 7, 9 and 10 classes assisted with this project and if the plants grow as well as those put in last year. we will soon have a beautiful garden beside the walkway. -

Throughout the year, we have worked to control the weeds that persist in invading our gardens. In the kitchen garden, our herbs are thriving, the lemon and olive trees are bearing fruit and group members have enjoyed our garden produce. On the traffic island at the McAuley Wing, the plants are growing well. We are most grateful for the assistance of the TAFE Trades class who built and installed the seating in this project site. The same students also installed the timber edging along the garden bed beside the McAuley walkway. Jacqui Fishwick and Katerina Ogden have been great ambassadors for the group. Jacqui wrote a series of articles for the Marist Star to raise awareness of climate change and provide practical advice on how we can look after our environment. Katerina has been a competent spokesperson. She was interviewed for the television news coverage of Schools National Tree Day and with Jacqui's assistance provided a competition judge with a comprehensive tour and explanation of the group's work.

Marist welcomed 11 KOchi Minami High School students and their teacher, Mrs Shiho Yokoyama in August this year. They stayed for 2 weeks, experiencing home stays and lassie school life.

The students visited all of our Japanese classes; Australia and Japanese way of life, school life style, English and Japanese conversation practice and even traditional games were shared. The Kochi students came from the International Communication and Science courses. Apart from joining Japanese language classes, the KOchi students shared cooking and eating etiquette and knowledge with Mrs Carbonari's VET class.

Their two excursions were to Wing's Wildlife Farm and Hamilton \ Farm. Koalas and Wombats were the favourite animals and inclement weather on their farm day brought a new experience — wearing gumboots! They also had fun at a casual get together for families at McDonalds, a farewell and the final day with their host students on Feast Day. Host families took the students touring at the weekends — Stanley, Launceston, Cradle Mountain and Tasmazia.

All the students grew to appreciate cultural differences, sensitivities and their language skills, particularly listening and speaking, improved markedly.

A huge thank you to our host families who opened their homes and hearts. The wonderful friendships made will be able to be renewed when we visit Kochi in May/June 2008.

Cherry Blossom Festival Marist Year 10's and Senior College students performed a Yosakoi dance at the 2nd Cherry Blossom Festival at the Emu Valley Rhodo- dendron Gardens as a part of Burnie Shines.

Yosakoi is the name of a summer festival and dance in the K6chi area. When KOchi Minami High came to visit in August this year they performed this dance for us. Sayo Sensei performed with them and so has been able to teach us. Yosakoi began as a festival for the health and prosperity of the people of KOchi as well as for the success of local agriculture and industry.

Dancers clap their naruko (small painted wooden clappers) as they dance behind beautifully decorated bands. The dance we performed has been adapted from a traditional tune but the dance moves are quite modern, making it very appealing for young people.

A dream come true — especially for the twelve Year 10 and Senior College students and the two teachers who were lucky enough to go on the school trip. Ranging from 16 to 18 years old (well, except for the teachers!!) it was, for many of us, our first time out of the country. We arrived in Paris after a gruelling 20+ hour flight with a brief stopover in Kuala Lumpur. Even though we were all pretty tired when we arrived in Paris our exhaustion soon dissipated as we drove through the intricate beauty of this famous city. The traffic was crazy and they all drove on the WRONG side of the road!! During our stay in Paris we went EVERYWHERE — there was never a dull moment from climbing the Arc de Triomphe, boating along the Seine and watching the lights come on all over Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower at sunset. We tried fantastic pastries and crepes filled with cheese or chocolate sauce, sandwiches that were in fact a length of baguette stuffed with ham or salad. We walked and walked and walked and practised our French at every opportunity. I'm sure we made lots of mistakes but the people were all pretty friendly and fortunately for us, spoke a bit of English. The Palace of Versailles was an amazing walk back into the historical times of Marie Antoinette and we all revisited our childhood spending the day at Euro Disney. We perfected our high kicks outside the Moulin Rouge and practiced our orienteering skills finding our way on the Parisian Metro. A few of us even became emotional and shed a tear when coming face to face with the works of famous artists in the Musee D'Orsay. Quelle semaine inoubliable! Then it was off to the south on the TGV — that stands for very fast train! "Goinci to France was pje.ch.pce of a

_4 We checked out some ancient ROMAN ruins on the way in Avignon, Nimes and Arles and one of the teachers (no names please) managed to find every great chocolaterie (that's a chocolate shop) in the area!! We were all most grateful.

Our final week was spent at La Seyne sur Mer near Toulon on the Cote D'Azur. We stayed with families of students from the Marist sister school Institution Sainte Marie. There are about the same number of students at the school as here in Burnie but they don't have beautiful grounds like we do and in fact their playing fields are just dirt!! Their old buildings were quite beautiful though. They go to school from 8am until 6pm and don't wear a uniform!! All the students learn some - English at school but there were lots of other languages on offer too like Italian, Spanish, Greek, Latin, German and Japanese. Even though the students could speak some English, some of us stayed with families where there was no English spoken. It was a really good opportunity to improve our French. We didn't have to go to too many classes — we went on excursions!! The weather was hot and we had a great day at the beach playing in the water or sunning ourselves on the sand; there was even a game of rugby on the lawn. Another day we went out on a boat to Food Technology

YEAR 8 DESIGN AND FASHION HOBART TRIP

On Thursday 1" of November, a group of 30 girls and Mrs Dennis, Ms Bell and Ms Laing travelled down to Hobart for a Design and Fashion trip. We left school at lunchtime and travelled down with our first stop being at the Raspberry Farm. We continued on our way and arrived to freshen up and then head out to Tacos in Salamanca for dinner. Later that night we went ice-skating and it was hilarious turning around seeing Jo Blacklow on the ground nearly every time.

Friday morning we woke up early, visited various clothing and design businesses around Hobart including the Design and Fashion department of TAFE. After that we had a little bit of shopping time. Heading home to our units with Pizza for dinner and then out to view the film Hairspray for the night.

Saturday morning we went to Salamanca Market, then shopping in the city. We had a great time shopping and returned to our accommodation to prepare ourselves for the Fashion Fantasia Awards at the Derwent Entertainment Centre. It turned out to be a fantastic night and there were some awesome outfits.

Sunday morning we got up early and packed the bus to head home. We stopped at Elizabeth Town Cafe for a little bite to eat and then headed straight back to school. Overall our trip was fun and successful. Thankyou very much to Ms Laing for all your time and effort in organising our trip.

By Hope Turner

Camp day was the most exciting day of the year for us. On the fith and 9th of March all of Year 7 caught buses to Camp Clayton in Ulverstone. When we arrived we had a wide range of activities to choose from that we participated in over the two days we were there.

Some of the activities included: volleyball, flying fox, giant swing, BMX, high ropes course, rock climbing, beach walk and swim, and the challenge course.

When we arrived we were told about the rules and boundaries of the camp site. We then set off to our activities as our cabins were not quite ready for us. That 4 night when we were all settled in we had a talent night with each cabin having to perform a short skit. After this we had some supper and we were off to bed.

The next day we had a Liturgy on the beach and once again some more activities, then it was time to pack our bags and come home. With over 150 tired kids, most people slept on the buses on the way home.

KaIon 2007 Year 1- Life at the McAuley Wing

Well it has been quite an eventful year in Year 7. Our students have grown from the shy, anxious little fish on the first day in Term One, just getting used to the water in a bigger pond. It has been a pleasure to see the large percentage of students who have been involved in the life of the College in one way or another. This year, as well as the camps and activity days like Greek Day, many opportunities were presented to the students to explore their own particular interests. Above, Year 7 students making the most of the barbeque, porvided by the SRC early in 2007. While many of the older students get involved in some of these extra Below, orienteering at the Devonport Bluff. curricular activities, it usually takes a lot of courage for students in Year 7 to take a risk and dive in head first into another exciting area of the Marist Regional College pond.

Whether it be in the fields of art, music, sport, drama, landcare, science fairs, reading, or any other type of group, it is a real testament to their character to see their names and faces scattered throughout the pages of this edition of the Kalori.

I would like to extend a special thanks to all the Class Teachers who always do their utmost best to make the transition for each Year 7 to Marist a positive one. We have been blessed with their talents and also their dedication to the care of each student in their respective classes. I would also like to acknowledge the support of subject teachers, support aides and those who filled in from time to time. A very special thanks is owed to Mrs Nicola Rogers who worked tirelessly and with great enthusiasm in the role of Year 7 Coordinator before going on leave in Term Three.

On behalf of all those mentioned above I wish the Year 7 students of 2007 all the very best as the Year 8s of 2008.

The remainder of the Hall has been converted into two classrooms, which help to address the needs of the College's growing student enrolment. 4 This year our Arts Festival took on a totally different dimension.

Marist Regional College opened its doors allowing the public to feast their eyes, ears and taste buds on a variety of entertainment. The week long extravaganza opened on Monday 9th July with a cocktail party, held in the Black and White Café situated in the West Wing of the College (with a sea view not to be surpassed).

Visitors arrived via the driveway, lit by giant handmade lanterns, suspended from every tree. These stunning pieces of art were created by our Art students.

Tickets were available for specific performances as were Roaming Passes which enabled the audience to view several presentations on the one evening.

Venues included a giant marquee, the Colin Theatre, the entire Music Area of 13 ensemble size rooms and two classrooms, the canteen, the cooking rooms and kitchen, the quadrangle decorated with fairy lights and a mass of very obliging flowering bulbs, the Drama Suite and many other quaint and fascinating places of interest.

There was a wide variety offered in our programme

Other sensations included: The Iron Chef competition between staff and students, hosted by Rick Goddard, which was a barrel of laughs; the superb success of Cafe Floriani; the inspirational performance of 'Cosi', which highlighted the immense dramatic talents of our senior students; 'Away' which was both challenging and effective, the refreshing performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and the Drama variety show'Ful/ On' which featured dance, drama, skits and fabulous fun.

'The Magical Musical Mystery Tour' featured twenty eight items presented in individual rooms decorated in the appropriate theme. The audience was mobile, moving to the next aural and visual delight on the unforgettable cue from the bagpipes. The decorations ranged from the disco/rap flashing lights techno room, the African jungle Lion King room, to the Monastery where the nuns performed songs from Sister Act. Further atmosphere 00 00 Lc mARisT `Marist is Art' Festival July 9th - 14th, 2007 ...continued was created by the photography and portrait exhibition, sculptures, animal and celebrity portraits, and our own radio station set up by the students. The best of the Silent Film Festival was also a highlight.

Culinary delights, prepared by our talented staff and students, tempted the taste buds.

We successfully explored the available resources with the result that our aim of involving a wider number of members of our College Community in this year's Arts Festival, held for the first time on the College property, was achieved without a doubt.

We thank all of the participants for their excellent efforts and extend our appreciation trivIt to the public for their strong support of our new venture.

79 On 2nd April, the biggest surf contest of the year took place at Clifton Beach near Hobart. Over 300 Tasmanian Schools students participated in this year's championship in 12 different divisions. The competitors come from Surfing Championships all over the state with teams from the East Coast, Bruny Island, Hobart, Launceston and the North West Coast.

Marist took a team of 12 students, 7 boys and 5 girls. The College was represented by Jake Otto in the Division 1 — High School Boys, Bradley Downie, Sam Edgerton, Pete Shugg and Josh Bellchambers in the Division 2 High School Boys; Brody Clear and Jessie Barnes in the Senior Boys Division 2; Josi Kooistra & Bethany Taylor in the High School Girls, Rhiannon Taylor, Josi Kooistra, Adelyn Ayton and Holly Ayton in the Girls' Longboard. As this was the first time competing for most of the students they were quite nervous.

We stayed at the "Newtown Hilton" (aka the Adelfi Youth Hostel) on the Sunday night ready for a 7am start at the beach on Monday morning. On the day, the waves were small at the beginning day and the swell built throughout the day. This made conditions tricky with most surfers opting to surf the inside reforming waves. For the first time ever, the contest was delayed for an hour after advice from the State Emergency Service because of a tsunami warning.

We were very pleased with or results given our inexperience in surfing competitions.

All students surfed well, but the best of the results were as follows:

Girls' Longoard: Bethany Taylor and Holly Ayton in the quarter finals (last 16) Adelyn Ayton in the semi-finals. (last 8)

High Schools Boys Div 2: Sam Edgerton — quarter final (final 16)

High Schools Boys Div 1: Jake Otto — semi-finals (last 8 - finished eq5th) — this was a great result considering this section had over 100 participants including Year 9 & 10 students and Jake is only Year 8.

College Boys Div 2: Brody Clear — quarter finals (last 16) Jesse Barnes - made the final and finished a very close 2nd.

While recocognising individual results, the competition is a team event with school winners announced in each division. We had a number of surfers who could not participate in the competition this year. On our results, however, if we can get those people involved next year, we would be very competitive in a number of divisions.

We would like to thank the following people: Mrs Chen and the school executive for allowing us to participate in the competition; Mrs Thomas, for accompanying the team and helping out; and Mrs Mardi Ayton and Mr Craig Otto for assisting on the day.

Futsal brazi I

During August 2007, I was fortunate enough to be selected in a team of Australian and New Zealand boys to travel to Brazil to play futsal. The team consisted of 6 Australians and 3 New Zealanders under the guidance of Gui Costa, a Brazilian born futsal coach. Futsal, is a very fast, 5 a side indoor soccer game. In Australia it is a relatively new sport, where as in Brazil, it has a long history. In Brazil children don't play outdoor soccer until they are 14, honing their ball skills till then playing futsal. This difference was obvious in our first few games, when we played the Brazilian boys outdoor it was another story. However, we were fortunate enough to be trained at Malwee Futsal Academy, after two days of training we replayed a team who, originally, beat us 7 -5 winning 7-1. The training seemed to make a difference. During the three week trip I spent time in Florianopolis, a large city in the south of Brazil, Jaragua do Sul, (which, in Brazil, is known as the city of Futsal) and Veranopolis. We watched a National League Football Game, met Falcao, who is the world number 1 futsal player, and were privileged enough to walk onto the court with the players in the Semi Final of the Futsal Champions League, and kick the ball around with them at halftime. The coach of one of these teams presented me with one of their jerseys at the end of the game. Despite rather long, indirect flights, which took us via Tokyo, and New York before reaching Brazil, I had an absolutely fabulous time. It is an experience I will never be able to repeat. My ball skills improved and I made some good friends, I also have many photos to help me remember my trip.

In the first week of the September holidays, a group of 15 Senior College students travelled to Mt. Hotham in Victoria for a week of fun in the snow.

After an eventful night on the Spirit of Tasmania and a five hour bus ride, the students, along with Mr Ireland and Mrs Viney finally arrived at their destination; for many it was the first time they had seen snow. We immediately grabbed all our gear and hit the slopes for our first ski lesson — and our only sunny day.

Students who had been the previous year, were pleased to see that there was a lot more snow. Everyday followed a similar pattern with lessons in the morning followed by free time in the afternoon. The first few days the weather was terrible with a mixture of rain and snow, but this did not deter the group from braving hazardous conditions — both inside and outside. Towards the end of the week the Tasmanian Schools Skiing and Snowboarding Championships were held with four Marist students competing.

Highlights of the week included Lorene Galpin trying to fly off a cliff, Jonathon Mallinson getting sandwiched by two old ladies on the slopes, Sam McNeair crashing through a 'slow' sign and Brogan Mancell taking out a fence. Cyril was successful in breaking a hired ski binding and having to walk half way down the mountain only to find out it wasn't really broken. Mrs. Viney was an inspiration with her spectacular 100m slide down the slopes on her back.

At the end of the week were all pretty keen to sleep in a clean room and eat some real food. Most people passed out on the bus ride home from exhaustion, and after a very lucky Collingwood victory on Friday night, we were finally home.

On Wednesday 21st February, Marist travelled to Launceston to play Scotch Oakburn College. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, we managed to score a run. Scotch then fought back hard and scored 3 runs in their first innings. The second innings saw Marist score 3 more runs, whilst holding Scotch to just I run, levelling the scores. In the final innings the Marist girls scored another run to take a narrow lead. Unfor- tunately, Scotch found some good batting form, scoring 14 runs. In the end Marist went down 17 runs to 5. All girls should be congratulated on their efforts especially Justine Woodcock who scored 2 runs in here first game and Laura Poke who took a good catch and then threw to 2nd base to help secure a double play. / Zoe Cooke NSATIS Netball lsts

This year, the Marist Regional College netballers participated in the 13th Annual Australian Marist Netball Carnival. The carnival was hosted by LavaIla Catholic College in Traralgon, Victoria from 24th to 27th June. The Marist Netball Carnival is a netball competition open to Marist schools from around Australia. In 2007, 18 teams participated including Marcellin College from New Zealand. This was the first time that Marist Regional College had competed.

The girls were very competitive and found the standard similar to State League Netball. After the first day of play the competition was divided into two divisions. Marist Regional College finished 4th in the Challenger Division. The team played very well together with some hard fought games. Caitlin Pearson was awarded player of the day on Monday and Jaime Bradley was awarded player of the day on Tuesday. Emma Webb was named in the All Australian Team and was awarded the Tournament Most Valuable Player as well as the Marist Regional College MVP.

The girls found the experience very enjoyable meeting new people from around the country and to their surprise being billeted out by the host school was a highlight.

The team included Caitlin Pearson, Emma Webb, Jaime Bradley, Jayne Engwerda, Ruby Dargaval, Sarah McDougall, Francesca Catlin, Nicole Young, Bronwyn Pearson and Kandice Stones. Travelling with the team to Traralgon was coach Renee French and manager Alanna Stretton. Academic Awards Kalori 2007
