Additional very special thanks go to Sue Rupp, Festival Secretary and Diane Sangster, Festival Graphic Designer. Warmly, Viviana Guzman www.VivianaGuzman.com Performer Bios Carol Alban www.MySpace.com/CarolAlban Carol Alban was the Principal Flutist with the Bay Area Chamber Symphony. She has played at Carnegie Hall, the Blue Note, CBGBs, Lincoln Center, Yoshi’s, Freight & Salvage, the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, etc. “Elegy” (2005) for solo flute. Dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Michael Tilson Thomas after hearing “Elegy”, he said, “That was beautiful!”. “Reflections” (1999) for two flutes (and various accompaniment). Isabelle Chapuis We eagerly agree with the San Francisco Chronicle writer who declared that Isabelle is “a sensation...French to her fingertips.” Born in the French region of Burgundy, she studied with some of France’s most legendary flutists, including Jean-Pierre Rampal, Michel Debost, Gaston Crunelle, Alain Marion, Christian Larde, and Marcel Moyse. Isabelle Chapuis Starr, flutist with Opera San Jose, is a retired faculty member at San Jose State University. Timothy Day Timothy Day joined the faculty of the Conservatory in 1987. In 2006 he was appointed principal flutist of the San Francisco Symphony. In addition he spent 12 seasons as principal flute with the Baltimore Symphony and taught at the Peabody Conservatory. He has served as acting principal flute with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Boston Symphony. During the summers, Mr. Day is on the faculty of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Bulent Evcil www.BulentEvcil.com Bulent Evcil studied at Brussel Royal Academy and at the Heidelberg-Mannheim Music Academy where he received the “efficiency in art” qualification where studied with Sir James Galway. Sir James described Evcil as “one of the best flutists of his generation.” Evcil has worked as solo flutist in various symphony orchestras: including the Arturo Toscanini Philharmonica, Murcia State Symphony, Sao Paulo State Symphony, Istanbul State Opera and State Symphony in Istanbul Borusan Philharmonica. Viviana Guzman www.VivianaGuzman.com Viviana Guzman was described by the New York Times as “an imaginative artist”. This multi-talented, Chilean-born artist, has been featured on programs for PBS, NPR and NBC, seen in Latina Style Magazine, & COSMOPOLITAN en Español, and has played in 116 countries. She has performed in Carnegie Hall five times and is graduate of the Juilliard School, Her upcoming season includes tours in China, Japan, Chile, Argentina, & performing as soloist with the San Jose Chamber & Stockton Symphony. 67 Robin McKee Robin McKee is Associate Principal Flutist of the San Francisco Symphony and occupant of the Catherine and Russell Clark Chair. She later studied with Robert Willoughby at the Oberlin Conservatory. Before joining the SFS in 1984, she played piccolo in the Richmond (Virginia) Symphony and served as assistant principal flutist of the Baltimore Symphony. Ms. McKee has performed as soloist many times with the SFS, including performances of the Bach Brandenburg Concertos. Nika Rejto www.NikaRejto.com Perhaps one of the best kept secrets in the Bay Area Jazz Scene is Nika Rejto, flutist extraordinaire. She’s living proof that good things come in small packages, yet despite her pixie-like demeanor, this lady can swing with the best. Dr. Herb Wong says, “Anyone hearing Nika is simply knocked out by her remarkably gorgeous tone - something from the angels.” Jack Bowers of Jazz Now compares her to “Old hands Frank Wess, Herbie Mann, James Moody.” Matej Zupan www.MatejZupan.com Matej ZUPAN (born 1970, Slovenija-Europe) is a Professor at the Academy of Music at University of Ljubljana. From 1996 to 2008 he was the principal flutist of the Slovenian National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
