    “Critic’s Choice Essay – DIR EN GREY” by John Dang Carrying the weight of one of Japan’s most well-known rock bands, metal band DIR EN GREY has been active for nearly 16 years since their inception in 1997, having successfully established an international fan base spanning from America to Europe altogether. Consisting of five members, Kyo (vocals), Kaoru (lead guitar), DIE (rhythm guitar), Toshiya (bassist), and Shinya (drummer), the band’s original concept laid within the visual kei movement, a popular subculture among Japanese musicians which focused on excessive make-up, flamboyant hairstyles, and gothic and punk inspired outfits, often leaving the impression of androgyny. However, through constantly incorporating their change as a band into their music and image, DIR EN GREY has transitioned away from the visual kei movement after their third album, VULGAR. As a result, in an effort to stay unique to their sound, DIR EN GREY is now considered an experimental metal band due to the different sound each album produces, which could also represent their desire to pursue their idea of expression. Centering their ideals around concepts such as “suicide is the proof of living” and “inward scream”, DIR EN GREY takes what would otherwise be negative ideas and translates them into music. Upon listening to their music or watching one of their promotional videos (the Japanese term for music video) for the first time, it would not be surprising for one to regard DIR EN GREY as vulgar, obscene, or disturbing. Although the band’s concept revolves around grotesque themes, their music can be described as a desire to ascertain a certain truth, often delving into the boundaries of one’s negativity to invoke self-realization or awareness in relation to the band’s message.

    OPINNÄYTETYÖ (AMK) | TIIVISTELMÄ TURUN AMMATTIKORKEAKOULU Kuvataide 2020 | 37 sivua Sylvester Kivelä VISUAL KEI JA RAPPION ESTETIIKKA Opinnäytetyö käsittelee japanilaista alakulttuuria visual keitä ja sen yhteisiä piirteitä eurooppalaisen 1800- luvun dekadenssin taidesuuntauksen kanssa. Aluksi määritellään visual kei ja tarkastellaan sen suhdetta kirjoittajaan. Myös dekadenssi ja sen suhde japanilaiseen taiteeseen ja orientalismiin määritellään. Sen jälkeen esitellään visual kein ja dekadenssin yhteisiä teemoja: väkivaltaa, unia, sukupuolta ja sairautta. Lopuksi pohditaan niiden poliittisuutta. Sekä visual keitä että dekadenssia leimaa synkkyys ja halu paeta ns. normaalia. Molemmat näkevät rappion väistämättömänä ja haluavat tehdä siitä kaunista. Opinnäytetyön tarkoitus on selventää visual kein teemoja suhteessa kirjoittajaan ja hänen taiteeseensa. Vaikka visual kei on inspiroivaa, on siinä myös kritisoitavaa, eikä kirjoittajan näkökulma sen teemoihin ole välttämättä sama kuin visual kei -artisteilla. At first, visual kei and decadence are defined and the author’s relationship to visual kei is discussed. Decadence and its relationship to orientalism is also addressed. After that the thesis introduces the joint themes of visual kei and decadence: violence, dreams, gender and disease. In the end a few words are said on the political nature of them. Both visual kei and decadence exemplify gloominess and will to escape the so called normal. They both see decay inevitable and want to turn it into something beautiful.

När det var jag som började vara ansvarig för uppdateringarna. Det allra tidigaste beviset jag kan finna på en lista som det med hundraprocentig säkerhet var jag som stod för är från december 2014. Så jag har inte riktigt gjort det i ett decennium än. Men jag är rätt säker på att det här är den absolut största uppdateringen jag har gjort. I alla fall är det, utan minsta tvivel, den största uppdateringen på så här kort tid, eftersom det inte ens var två månader sedan den förra listan. Vi hade nämligen förra månaden ett litet event. En karaokemakartävling som löpte över fyra veckor. Summa summarum: Över hundra nya låtar i listan. Plus ett gäng uppdaterade versioner av sånt vi redan hade. Själv har jag se’n sist i princip bara gjort One Piece och Nichijou-låtar, så där finns det diverse nytt att hämta. Högst takt höll Nea, som dessutom fokuserade mycket på nyare populära serier. Så häri kan ni numera hitta musik från Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken, Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, Dr.
