OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER… MS. MANDY CARTER Mandy Carter is a southern African-American lesbian social justice activist with a 47-year movement history of social, racial and LGBT justice organizing since 1968. She participated in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.- inspired 1968 Poor People’s Campaign. She is a recipient of the Union Medal, the highest honor from the Union Theological Seminary, for her distinguished advocacy in both civil rights and LGBTQ justice. Ms. Carter helped organize diverse, broad-based participation in the 50th Anniversary of the Selma-To-Montgomery Voting Rights Act activities that moved Congress to pass the 1965 Voting Rights Act that enfranchised hundreds of thousands of blacks across the South. Ms. Carter helped co-found two groundbreaking organizations, Southerners On New Ground (SONG) and the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC). NBJC, founded in 2003, is a national civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Ms. Carter was one of the five national co-chairs of Obama LGBT Pride, the national LGBT infrastructure for ’s historic 2008 presidential campaign and win. She is a former member of the Democratic National Committee’s Black Caucus and LGBT Caucus. Ms. Carter was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as part of the 1,000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005.

She is a prominent banking executive, co-founding two Raleigh banks - Triangle Bank and North State Bank. Jeanette Hyde is an American diplomat appointed by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the US Senate as Ambassador of the US to Barbados, Dominica, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, and St. Kitts-Nevis from 1994-1998. Jeanette is best known in the Democratic Party as a friend, advisor and financial supporter to numerous elected officials at the local, state and national levels.
