Preaching the Gospel of Church and Sex: Mormon Women's Fiction in the Young Woman's Journal, 18894910 Rebecca de Schweinitz. IN 1889, UTAH NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS informed their audiences about the start of a new monthly magazine, the Young Woman's Journal (YWJ). Initiated and first edited by Susa Young Gates, the daughter of Mormonism's second prophet, this journal, directed to girls and young, unmarried women in the Latter-day Saint (LDS) church, was to contain "the most elevating ideas of the Daughters of Zion."1 The YWJ published poems, stories, and articles, written overwhelmingly by women. It ana- lyzed "great" books like Anna Karenina and discussed topics such as women's health, suffrage, and marriage. The YWJ reveals both similari- ties and differences in the experiences and attitudes of Mormon women and women nationally, and it shows that LDS women were concerned about promoting their church and their sex. 1. WILLARD YOUNG: THE PROPHETS SON AT WEST POINT Leonard J. Arrington Professor Arrington, noted economist and author of GREAT BASIN KINGDOM was recently appointed as one of four special Research and Review editors for the IMPROVEMENT ERA; for this essay he has used recent research into the letters of Brigham Young to provide both an engaging profile of one of the Prophet's sons, a remarkable man in his own right, and also a unique view of Brigham Young in the role of father, trying to communicate love and counsel from far away, that contemporary fathers and sons should find sur- prisingly interesting. A common object of humor among visitors to Mormon Country in the nineteenth century was the large number of children. Many travellers' ac- counts contain a version of the story of Brigham Young's encounter with a ragged street urchin: "Who's child are you, Sonny?" "I'm Brigham Young's little boy. Please sir, do you know where I can find him?"1 In her portrait of her father, Susa Young Gates denies this view, stating that the relationship of Brigham Young to each of his fifty-six children was both intimate and affectionate.2 This, despite his heavy responsibilities in connection with the political, economic, and religious affairs of the Church and territory. A study of the correspondence of Brigham Young with one of his children, Willard Young, confirms this view, and reveals, in addition, JOr, as Artemus Ward put it: "He sez about every child he meats call him Pa, & he takes it for grantid it is so." “OUR UTAH GIRLS”: GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN IN THE TRANSITIONAL MORMON CHURCH By Natalie Kaye Rose A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History – Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT “OUR UTAH GIRLS”: GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN IN THE TRANSITIONAL MORMON CHURCH By Natalie Kaye Rose How the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) transitioned from practicing the most unconventional marriage system in the nation to representing a model of family stability has surfaced as one of the most riveting and perplexing questions in the field of American religious history. A common explanation for this remarkable transition centers upon the assumption that church members were eager to be welcomed into and prove their allegiance to the United States after contending with intense persecution and ostracism. However, this dissertation complicates this narrative and explores how acclimation into the mainstream United States was not a swift process for the church’s youngest female members. My dissertation examines how the church’s young women contended with and pushed back against the leadership’s expectations during this transition. The LDS church leadership and influential membership exercised their expectations and anxieties for the future of Mormonism through attitudes and actions directed toward adolescent female church members. Mormon girls embodied multiple possibilities for the future of the religion in the minds of the church leaders and the wider community. In the most literal sense, they represented the continuation of the religion through their desire to marry and have children. The leadership envisioned that adolescent Mormon women held the ability to push the religion into the twentieth century while still maintaining sacred religious traditions. -

UTAH LITERATURE Utah literature may be said to begin with the travel journal of Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante which, in 1776, provided the first written descriptions of Utah′s geography and people. For the next seventy-odd years, Utah′s literature consisted of the accounts of trappers, traders, and explorers, most notably John C. Frémont′s Report of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains, conducted in 1843 and published in 1845. (John Wesley′s Powell′s notable Report on the Lands of the Arid Regions was published in 1878.) Formal literature, however, may best be dated from the arrival of the Mormons in 1847, and the arrival of a printing press for the Deseret News in 1850 For almost a century thereafter, Utah′s literature could be divided into "insider" writings by the often beleaguered Mormons and intended for internal consumption and "observer" writings intended to explain or sometimes denounce Utah to the larger society. Notable examples of nineteenth-century observers include American journalist Horace Greeley′s letter series, published in 1860 as An Overland Journey, French botanist Jules Remy′s and British naturalist Julius Brenchley′s Journey to the Great Salt Lake City (1861), Richard F. Burton′s The City of the Saints (1861), and Fitz Hugh Ludlow′s literate and vivid observations, made in 1864 and published in 1870 as The Heart of the Continent, with illustrations by Albert Bierstadt. Perhaps most sympathetic to the Mormons was Elizabeth Kane′s Twelve Mormon Homes (1874), an account of her tour of Mormon settlements from Salt Lake City to St. -

'Wife': the Brigham Young Households
Determining and Defining 'Wife': The Brigham Young Households Jeffery Ogden Johnson UTAH SATIRIST AL CHURCH, among other suggestions on how to survive as a gentile in Utah, offered this tip: "Ask guides at the Beehive House how many wives Brigham Young had. (Of my last four tours, the answer has averaged 21.)" (1981, 17). The volunteer guides at the Beehive House have no corner on the confusion market. Ann Eliza Webb, a disgruntled wife suing Brigham Young for divorce and hefty alimony, defrayed her expenses by writing a mildly scandalous pot- boiler called Wife Number Nineteen (1876) in which she claimed (incor- rectly) to be the last and (also incorrectly) the nineteenth. She was actually number fifty-two. Stanley Hirshson's major biography of Brigham Young, The Lion of the Lord, gives the number of wives as seventy (1969, 184—223). The research that produced this number is unfortunately no more accurate than that in the rest of the book. In 1940, the Young family produced a widely used pamphlet, "Brigham Young's Wives, Children and Grandchildren" (Sanborn 1940) that gives the number as twenty-seven, a number popularized by Irving Wallace in his The Twenty-seventh Wife (1961), a fictionalized biography of Ann Eliza Webb Young. Leonard J. Arrington's award-winning biography, Brigham Young: American Moses (1985, 420-21), divides the wives into three groups: (1) the sixteen wives who had children by Brigham Young, (2) nine others whom "Brigham Young held out to be wives" but who had no children by him, and (3) "some thirty women" who were sealed to him for eternity only, but whom he does not name.
