The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia – Osservatorio Etneo (INGV-OE) manages a permanent local seismic network in Eastern Sicily, with the aim of monitoring the main tectonic areas (Iblei, Peloritani) and active Sicilian volcanoes (Etna, Vulcano, Stromboli). This network enables locating low magnitude earthquakes and detecting low energy signals that are typical of active volcanic areas (e.g. volcanic tremor, explosion quakes, LP events). Apart from Mt. Etna and the Aeolian islands, another area characterized by active volcanism is the Sicily Channel, with the volcanic edifices of Pantelleria and Linosa islands. The emergence (and subsequent disappearance after about two months) in 1831 of the Ferdinandea island, as well as the Foerstner island in 1891 (about 4 km north of Pantelleria), is the most reliable and recent evidence of volcanism in the Sicily Channel, which is undersea for the most part (Fig. 1). Since there are only a few onshore areas in the Sicily Channel, it is therefore difficult to instrumentally detect its seismicity with traditional onshore networks, with the exception of locating the foci of high-energy earthquakes, which often have poor azimuthal constraints. -

The analysis of the investigated samples shows a high Contamination level of metal contamination which can be linked both to the polluted water and air. ABSTRACT: Present study analyze the building structures in the Ancient Poggioreale (Architectonical Site, it’s situated in Trapani’s province), destroyed by an earthquake in 1968 and actually abandoned. The aim is to transform the country in a study-yard, an open-sky laboratory, which should be articulated to different aspects: historical, architectonic, economics and cultural. THE KNOWLEDGE PROJECT Introduction In the within of the research activities of XVIII cycle∗ of Ph. Doctorate in Recovery and Use of Ancient Contests, has been stipulated a Convention between the Communal Committee of Poggioreale and the D.P.C.E. (Department of Project and Building Construction) of the University of Palermo, in order to develop a scientific work, aimed to the enhancement of the Ancient Poggioreale Architectonical Site, destroyed by an earthquake in 1968 and actually abandoned. The aim is to transform the country in a study-yard, an open-sky laboratory, which should be articulated to different aspects: historical, architectonic, economics and cultural. IV, XXXI (3-4), 2007, pp. 127 -145 VALERIO AGNESI , C HIARA CAPPADONIA & C HRISTIAN CONOSCENTI CARTA GEOMORFOLOGICA DEL BACINO IDROGRAFICO DEL RIO SPINASANTA E NOTE ILLUSTRATIVE (SICILIA CENTRO-SETTENTRIONALE) RIASSUNTO Le presenti note illustrative accompagnano la Carta Geomorfologia del Rio Spinasanta, nella quale sono descritte le forme del rilievo presenti nel bacino e vengono individuati i processi morfo - genetici in atto. Il Rio Spinasanta è un affluente del Fiume Imera Settentrionale (o Fiume Grande), di cui occupa le porzioni di testata, lungo lo spartiacque regionale che ne divide il bacino da quello del Fiume Imera Meridionale (o Fiume Salso); per la redazione della carta è stata utilizzata, come base topografica, la Sezione n° 621040 (Monte Piombino) della Carta Tecnica Regionale in scala 1:10.000. La carta geomorfologica del bacino è stata realizzata tramite l’integrazione di differenti meto - dologie , quali il rilevamento diretto di tipo geologico e geomorfologico, l’analisi aerofotogramme - trica di foto aeree ed ortofoto. La caratterizzazione geomorfologica dell’area è stata inoltre suppor - tata dall’analisi delle caratteristiche pluviometriche e dall’analisi spaziale delle forme, eseguita tramite l’ausilio di un software GIS; quest’ultima ha permesso di produrre delle tabelle relative alla distribuzione delle forme del rilievo in relazione alle caratteristiche litologiche e fisiografiche, quali esposizione e pendenza dei versanti. Lo studio condotto ha evidenziato come le diverse combinazioni di questi fattori influenzino la distribuzione spaziale delle forme del rilievo e l’intensità dei processi in atto, causando, inoltre, una differenziazione del paesaggio all’interno del bacino tra le aree poste in destra idrografica e quelle situate nelle zone centrali ed in sinistra idrografica. -

Accepted 28 November 2012 Published The Messina Strait, that separates peninsular Italy from Sicily, is one of the most seismically active areas of 13 December 2012 the Mediterranean. The structure and seismotectonic setting of the region are poorly understood, although the area is highly populated and important infrastructures are planned there. New seismic reflection data have identified a number of faults, as well as a crustal scale NE-trending anticline few km north of the strait. These features are interpreted as due to active right-lateral transpression along the north-eastern Sicilian Correspondence and offshore, coexisting with extensional and right-lateral transtensional tectonics in the southern Messina requests for materials Strait. This complex tectonic network appears to be controlled by independent and overlapping tectonic settings, due to the presence of a diffuse transfer zone between the SE-ward retreating Calabria subduction should be addressed to zone relative to slab advance in the western Sicilian side. -

Di Natale1, S. Tensek1, C. Palma1 SUMMARY One of the main activities of the ICCAT GBYP is data recovery and most of the efforts have been devoted to traps, the gear with the longest history. After 7 years of data recovery, a considerable amount of information and a data series going back to 1512 were produced, now the data statistics to be used by the SCRS. At this point, to avoid biased interpretations of the accumulated data, it is important to show what is behind the numbers, the complexity of the situations over the many centuries and the limits for interpreting the data. For this purpose, we used as an example the data from the Sicilian traps, the most documented and even the most complex series. RÉSUMÉ La récupération des données constitue l'une des principales tâches de l'ICCAT-GBYP et la plupart des efforts ont été consacrés aux madragues, l’engin présentant l’historique le plus long. Après avoir récupéré des données pendant sept ans, ce qui a produit une quantité considérable d'informations et une série de données remontant à 1512, le SCRS a commencé à utiliser les données statistiques. À ce stade, afin d’éviter les interprétations biaisées des données accumulées, il est important de montrer ce qui se cache derrière les chiffres, la complexité des situations au cours des nombreux siècles et les limites d'interprétation des données. -

It comprises the Sila and Catena Costiera Massifs in northern Calabria, the Serre and Aspromonte Massifs in central and southern Calabria, and the Peloritani Mountains in Sicily. In Sila and Catena Costiera Massifs, three tectonic complexes are recognisable: a) the basal Apennine Complex, which consists of carbonate platform sequences of passive continental margin; b) the intermediate Liguride Complex, made of oceanic-derived units, affected by HP/LT metamorphism; and c) the upper Calabride Complex, which represents a nearly entire section of continental crust. The Catanzaro Line separates the northern sector from the Serre Massif that also represents a nearly entire segment of Variscan continental crust unaffected by Alpine metamorphism. Further to the south, the Palmi Line separates the Serre from the Aspromonte Massif and the Peloritani Mountains. These two latter nappe edifices consist of either Variscan metamorphic units, Variscan units with Alpine overprint and units of continental derivation that are exclusively affected by Alpine metamorphism. -
