2011 Scholarship and Career Achievement Awards Dinner Presented by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, Office of Catholic Education and Office of Stewardship and Development The Most Rev.Christopher J. Coyne, S.L.D. Apostolic Administrator Archdiocese of Indianapolis and Kevin Hipskind Event Chair Present The Sixteenth Annual 2011 Scholarship and Career Achievement Awards Dinner Grand Ballroom J.W. Marriott Hotel Indianapolis, Indiana Welcome to the Celebrating Catholic School Values Awards Dinner Dear Friends of Catholic Education: Welcome to our 16th annual Celebrating Catholic School Values: Scholarship and Career Achievement Awards event. Over the past 15 years, we have raised more than $4.6 million to provide tuition assistance grants to families in need who wish to send their children to an archdiocesan Catholic school of their choice. This broad support demonstrates the commitment to Catholic education that is shared across central and southern Indiana. Parents are willing to sacrifice to send their childr en to a Catholic school because they know that a Catholic education will prepare them to succeed academically. In addition to gaining knowledge, children who receive a Catholic education grow in their faith and gain the self-discipline and morals needed to liv e happy and productive lives. We are delighted to have Dr. Tony Bennett, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, as our keynote speaker. Dr. Bennett, a graduate of Catholic schools, has been a teacher and administrator for mor e than 20 years. His involvement in supporting education initiatives such as state vouchers to give students more educational opportunities has put Indiana in the national education reform spot- light. Tonight, we will recognize an outstanding Catholic husband and wife and four other individuals who have used their Catholic values to make a difference in the lives of the people around them and in their communities. Our program tonight also will honor our recently retired archbishop, the Most Rev. Daniel M. Buechlein, O.S.B. Through 19 years of faithful leadership, service and prayer, Archbishop Daniel—our Education Archbishop—led the efforts to make the Archdiocese of Indianapolis’ Catholic schools among the best in the nation. Thank you for your support of our students and Catholic education. Sincerely yours, Most Rev. Christopher J. Coyne, S.L.D. His success is the result of his life- long commitment to the education of Indiana children. For more than 20 years, he has served as a teacher, coach and administrator helping Indiana students receive the first-class education they deserve. After nine years as a science teacher, Dr. Bennett began his career in administration, quickly devel- oping a reputation as a leader with a talent for school management, strategic planning and efficient budgeting. Bennett was highly influenced by his time as principal at Prosser School of Technology in New Albany, Indiana; a career- technology center focused on preparing students for success in a 21st centur y economy. Since being elected Superintendent of Public Instruction, Bennett has established Indiana as the leader of the nation’s comprehensive education reform movement. Indiana’s 2011 legislative session produced new laws that empower school leaders, recognize and reward great educators and provide families with quality educational options, including parochial schools through the Choice Scholarship program (state vouchers) and the School Scholarship Tax Credit. Dr. Bennett received his Ed.D. and Superintendent’s License from Spalding University, Louisville. He earned his Certification in Secondary Administration and Supervision, a Master of Science in Secondary Education, and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Indiana University Southeast. He is currently Chair of Chiefs for Change, a bi-par tisan group of state school chiefs committed to education reform. Tony Bennett attended Catholic schools for all of his formal K-12 education. He was employed as a biology and science teacher at Our Lady of Providence in 1983 and coached there from 1983-1990, including three years as head boys basketball coach, from 1987-1990. Dr. Bennett and wife Tina have four grown children: Lizzie and triplets, Tony, Trisha and Katie. He notes that his parents, Dick and Marie Bennett, are still very active at St. Anthony’s Church and regularly attend the morning liturgy at Providence High School.
