Lovecraft's 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' forms a major link in the author's renowned "", featuring a race of ichthyoid Deep Ones which over the years have inter-bred with humans in strange and terrifying ways. Kiernan, Richard A. The book also includes a discarded draft of Lovecraft's seminal story about that foetid, forsaken New England fishing town with its sparkling Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth and loathsome denizens, along with a major new Lovecraftian novella by international best- selling author Brian Lumley, written especially for this volume. In these stories, as the decades pass, 's scaly spawn continues to spread out from America's east coast to cast its malignant influence over the rest of the world. Meanwhile, mankind finally discovers the true nature of the unspeakable evil that lies hidden beneath the waves out beyond the reef, biding its time until it is ready to rise once Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth. Kiernan, Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth "Brackish Waters" by Richard A. As soon as the library gets their copy of the first volume back, it will be in my little webbed hands for my reading pleasure. Apr 29, Bethnoir rated it really liked it. I am amazed, after 2 Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth short story compliations, that this book managed to be a s surprising and delightful as it was. You might think that tales inspired by H P Lovecraft's fiction might get a bit samey, but once again there was much to surprise and impress. I was particularly taken by Kim Newman's unusual take on the mythology and alarmed by Conrad Williams story. I recommend this book. Probably one of his most accessible but also, I feel, one of his most evocative of time and place as well as his most visceral. Kiernan and Paul McAuley I thought it was worth a try. In the original story, a man trying to travel cheaply through the area ends up going through the coastal town of Innsmouth. Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth spends an uncomfortable night in this place that shunned by the the people in nearby towns and shrouded in mystery and rumour. Turns out many of the people here have long been interbreeding with an amphibian humanoid race and worship an ancient good of the sea; Dagon. Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth it goes on with the stories that in some ways help elucidate the ideas and themes that were perhaps more obscure in the original story. The standard of the stories were generally good but without any truly outstanding contributions. And the narrowness of the theme got a bit repetitive after a while; I'm used to reading anthologies with a broader remit. I think that generally I prefer authors to be more loosely inspired by Lovecraft, to go off and explore their own mythos. Still, it was well worth a read. Huge disappointment. Even the Copper and Lumley stories failed to bring this book to life. I actually enjoyed most of the stories in here more than in Shadows Over Innsmouththe first of this "series". This could be because there were less stories in this one, so there's less chance for there to Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth duds. Many of the stories in that one started to blend together. For me Brian Lumley's "The Taint" is worth the price of admission alone. It was a story I had Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth read and enjoyed in high school, and I was happy to find it held up just as well if not becoming more enjoyable on the re-read I actually enjoyed most of the stories in here more than in Shadows Over Innsmouththe first of this "series". It was a story I had first read and enjoyed in high school, and I was happy to find it held up just as well if not becoming more enjoyable on the re- read. An insidiously creepy and modern take on the Deep Ones. But all of the stories in here ranged from good to great. Lovecraft's unfinished "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" draft was also an interesting read; I eagerly gobble up anything of his like the devoted fangirl I am! A recommended read for those who are looking for some good and creepy Deep One stories. View 1 comment. Apr 19, ashley mckenzie rated it really liked it. Great short stories. I wasn't a huge fan of this one in the series. Maybe it wasn't my tastes, but I felt like I was forcing myself to read this, Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth of just enjoying the book. I like the stories because they are based on Lovecraft fiction. However, Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth have yet to read one that mimicks his style exactly. I wish he had written more. Oct 17, Mark rated it did not like it. I found the stories very engaging, even with the racism and sexism that I've come to expect in some of these Lovecraftian tales. Some had really good twists in them too. Jones has put together a good collection of Innsmouth themed stories in this anthology. Many, I was surprised, I had read before and thus I ended up skipping large sections of text. Though disheartening for me, those who haven't read these stories will find them to be excellent reads and well worth their time. This book was jam packed full of great Lovecraftian mythos stories. There was an August Derleth story that often gets misattributed to being a co- creation with Lovecraft. The story was "Innsmouth Clay". I am looking forward to Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth the other two books in this series as my summer Lovecraf This book was jam packed full of great Lovecraftian mythos stories. I am looking forward to reading the other two books in this series as my summer Lovecraft Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth continues. At first glance this seems like the sort of anthology I'd avoid. Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth tend to steer clear of themed anthologies, not that I haven't enjoyed a few in the past, but ideally when I read a collection I want to be completely surprised from one story to Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth next. And these are inspired by a single story! Furthermore, though I adore Lovecraft, I hate "Lovecraftian. But the author list was At first glance this seems like the sort of anthology I'd avoid. But the author list was promising. I knew Brian Hodge would turn in something good. And even though I usually don't like Ramsey Campbell's work, I knew at least his submission wouldn't be something cheap. Of the authors new to me, I particularly liked Kim Newman's entry, a somewhat lighthearted tale in the "boy detective" vein. Despite all the stories being spun out of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" and its surrounding mythology, they are all quite varied in style and approach. There really wasn't a bad one in the book. Getting Lovecraftian stories published seems to be relatively easy nowadays, like shooting fish in a barrel. Before getting to the text, I want to mention the fine ink lines on the splendid illustrations Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth Randy Broecker. The narrative is on that hoary old manuscript tucked away in a secret place and was written by Jebediah Allen, a god-fearing Baptist. Dick, Violet and Ernest are on holiday in Lyme Regis and are alarmed when a mad clergymen smashes to pieces an ammonite they have found. Jeffrey Corey is a sculptor who takes up residence near Innsmouth and works on a statue of a sea goddess using odd clay washed up on the beach. Ye olde fiction atmosphere is maintained by the device of journal entries telling the story. The story is set in and features a Wodehouse-style fool by the name of Bertie. The sense of menace builds nicely to a surprisingly action-packed climax. I liked it. New York sleuth Nick Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth is hired Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth three fishy looking characters to murder a man called Stefan Zeitsheim as soon as he gets off the boat from Odessa. This is a fast-paced thriller which also develops the premises of Innsmouth in an interesting and logical way. The hard-boiled detective story is often teamed up with horror themes nowadays, usually to good effect. This volume is blessed with three stories from Caitlin R. She seems to have a thing about horrible lovers. A writer, actually. Well, they are strange. Fashioned in dense text, with scarcely a word of dialogue, it is very like the work of the man who inspired this volume. No need to repeat here. Usual theme but lots of visceral dream imagery effectively conveys the atmosphere of something ancient and rotten lurking in the water. This one starts slow, almost like a Victorian novel, but draws you in stealthily and makes your flesh creep. Ramsay Campbell started out doing Lovecraftian fiction and still dips his toe in those dark waters now and again. I think all pub frequenters have done this occasionally. The author Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth the sense of menace slowly Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth dialogue worthy of a Harold Pinter play. Ramsay Campbell is well regarded in the field and one really should get round to Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth more of his stuff. The hangover is also well described. The story is set in Carmel, California where there seem to be no down and outs at all. Our hero is a painter and there are interesting thoughts on the creative process. Angela Slatter gives us a long story set in a school where Doctor Croftmarsh is a teacher and translator with a patchy memory. Two survivors team up on a mission to the centre of the peril, wading through the flooded Underground system and avoiding the marine servants of the dark gods. There was extensive flooding in south-west England a couple of years ago and global warming was much mentioned. Simon Kurt Unsworth dramatises this with a television crew reporting and a cameraman finding unexpected things in the water. I wonder if real-life crews see it that way. The story maintained an atmosphere of menace. The creepy build-up of some protagonists finding strange goings-on leads inevitably to the conclusion that men have bred with fishy things and are lurking about. The various authors do a good job with the atmosphere, the plot and the characters but the element of surprise, which was Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth to the Spanish Inquisition, is not possible. On the other hand, fans of this sub-genre know that and are probably looking for variations on a theme by HPL rather than something startlingly original. For this reason, I recommend reading it in small doses over a period of time; but I do recommend reading it. Weird Shadows Over Innsmouth not sure I've read any Cthulhuian literature before, despite being well aware of the Old Gods through various media including a one-man play. This has now been rectified by reading this book, which mixes work from H. Weirder Shadows Over Innsmouth by Stephen Jones
