    Molly on the Shore: A Conductor’s Guide to a Minor Miracle David Goza Director of Orchestral Activities, the University of Arkansas Percy Aldridge Grainger’s 1920 wind band setting of Molly on the Shore hardly qualifies for the “masterpiece” designation best held in reserve for such compositions as that composer’s Lincolnshire Posy and Hindemith’s Symphony in B flat: it has about as much weight and substance as a single movement of the former (a little longer, to be sure, but not nearly as psychologically freighted), and was really never intended to be more than a diversion. Its modest aims notwith- standing, Molly on the Shore affords high entertainment value both for listeners and performers and is not entirely lacking in the kind of substance that rewards analytical scrutiny. It began life as a setting for string quartet (1907) and subsequently appeared in versions for string orchestra, full orchestra, violin and piano, and piano solo before being set for winds. All of the earlier settings are in G major; the band version is ratcheted up a half step to make things easier for the transposing instruments. The work was originally published by Schott & Co., Ltd.; in the U.S. it has been re-issued by Carl Fischer, Inc. The composition is based on two reel tunes from Cork, which were published in 1905 in Charles Villiers Stanford’s Complete Petrie Collection of Ancient Irish Music (Stanford’s edition is actually an update of a much older collection). Those tunes, Nos. 901 and 902, are “Temple Hill” and “Molly on the Shore,” respectively.

    Percy Grainger: Country Gardens and Other Curses David S. Josephson [Ed. Note,' This is the first in a series of writings conceived by the author as an essay in bibliography, seeking to provide the foundation for a thorough and broadly-based study of the life and music of Percy Grainger.] The lead obituary in The New York Times on 21 February 1961 began: "Percy Grainger, Composer, Dead/Creator of Country Gardens . .. " An edi- torial eulogy in the Times on the following day noted that "pieces like his Country Gardens will be delighting audiences long after some of the highly touted music of more 'advanced' composers is long, long forgotten." A recording published shortly before Grainger's death was given the title Country Gardens and Other Favorites. 1 The sad litany always begins with Country Gardens, and it invariably con- tinues with Colonial Song, Handel in the Strand, Irish Tune from County Derry, Mock Morris, Molly on the Shore, Shepherd's Hey. Culled from a seemingly bottomless chest and published in any number of marketable arrangements, these charming little conceits provided their creator with a handsome in- come, but at the same time they obscured utterly the spirit and accom- plishments of the man and slowly drove his reputation into the ground. Their popularity is only one of a tangle of sources that have distorted our perception of Grainger. Certainly he himself was partly responsible for that distortion, just as he was for the gradual narrowing of his reputation as a pianist to exponent of the Grieg Piano Concerto (which he considered "hardly one of its composer's most exquisite works"2) and a handful of other pieces, despite his mastery of an immense and unconventional reper- tory.

    Percy Grainger and the Intimate Saxophone Dr. Paul Cohen Percy Grainger and the Intimate Saxophone Percy Grainger's relationship with the saxophone extended far beyond academic and compositional appreciation. His enthusiasm and personal involvement were such that he owned two saxophones, (curved soprano and baritone), learned to play them, and even taught his wife, Ella, the baritone saxophone. Grainger's first encounter with the instrument occurred during a folk-song research expedition in England. In a letter to his friends recalling this event he wrote: “Around 1904 Balfour Gardiner & I heard our first sax-reed (a tenor) near Frome, Somerset. A man in a country band played one to us. And I knew then & there, that I was hearing the world's finest wind tone-tool —the most voice- like, the most mankind-typed, “ When Grainger enlisted in the United States Army as musician third class (summer of 1917), he chose to audition on the soprano saxophone! When the time came to join, Grainger apparently bought a soprano, learned the Blue Bells of Scotland (his entire repertoire), walked to Fort Totten (NewYork), and enlisted as a bandsman. He kept secret his identity as an internationally acclaimed concert pianist for some months, and concentrated his efforts on playing saxophone and oboe, while exploring the instruments and possibilities of the wind-band. It was here that he composed his remarkable “Children's March: Over the Hills and Far Away” which, in the original orchestration, (since revised by the publisher) includes parts for soprano and bass saxophone, and contra-bass sarrusophone! This original version has been republished by Southern Music, and can now be heard as Grainger originally intended.
