REVIEW GUIDES FOR THE EARTHWORM PRACTICUM
USE YOUR DIAGRAMS, THE ONES ONLINE, AND THE ANSWERS BELOW TO HELP YOU AS YOU COMPLETE A FINAL REVIEW OF THE EARTHWORM! (IF THE STRUCTURE IS NOT LISTED BELOW, IT IS NOT ON THE PRACTICUM!)
EARTHWORM - EXTERNAL
Complete the chart below with the functions/uses of the structures listed for the Earthworm. Structure Function/Use
Mouth Where the organisms takes in food (soil) to obtain nutirents
Anus The location where the organism releases wastes from the body
An enlarged area on the anterior end of the organism that secretes mucus aiding in the Clitellum processes of reproduction
Setae Bristles on each segment hat help the organism with locomotion (movement)
The following positional terms are important when understanding the anatomy of the Earthworm. Describe how you can find the following areas: Anatomical Key Features/Location Position
Caudal End The end that contains the anus
The top side of the organism that is darker and smoother in nature (The clitellum is intact Dorsal Side on this side of the organism
The bottom side of the organism that is lighter on color (Segmentation is seen through the Ventral Side clitellum on this side)
EARTHWORM - INTERNAL
Complete the chart below with the functions/uses of the structures listed for the Earthworm. Structure Function/Use
Helps the earthworm pull in food through its mouth with this structure; it’s a muscular Pharynx structure
Aortic Arches (5) Act as the “hearts” of the organism, circulating blood throughout the body
Seminal Vesicles Secretes sperm used for the earthworm to reproduce
Tube that carries food/soil from the pharynx to the crop (The aortic arches surround the Esophagus esophagus)
Crop Thin walled organ that acts as a temporary storage place for food
Muscular organ where food is forced from the crop; The rhythmical contractions Gizzard cause grains of sand to rub the food particles together; It grinds up food.
Location where digestion continues after gizzard grinds food (Chemical processes occur Stomach here)
The blood vessel that runs along the dorsal side of the worm (can be seen from the Dorsal Blood Vessel outside); The blood runs along this vessel from the aortic arches to the rest of the body.
