EXPERIMENT: a Manifesto of Young England, 1928- 1931 Two Volumes
EXPERIMENT: A Manifesto of Young England, 1928- 1931 Two Volumes Vol. 2 of 2 Kirstin L. Donaldson PhD University of York History of Art September 2014 Table of Conents Volume Two Appendix: Full Transcript of Experiment Experiment 1 (November 1928) 261 Experiment 2 (February 1929) 310 Experiment 3 (May 1929) 358 Experiment 4 (November 1929) 406 Experiment 5 (February 1930) 453 Experiment 6 (October 1930) 501 Experiment 7 (Spring 1931) 551 260 EXPERIMENT We are concerned with all the intellectual interests of undergraduates. We do not confine ourselves to the work of English students, nor are we at pains to be littered with the Illustrious Dead and Dying. Our claim has been one of uncompromising independence: therefore not a line in these pages has been written by any but degreeless students or young graduates. It has been our object to gather all and none but the not yet ripe fruits of art, science and philosophy in the university. We did not wish so much that our articles should be sober and guarded as that they should be stimulating and lively and take up a strong line. We were prepared in fact to give ourselves away. But we know that Cambridge is painfully well-balanced just now (a sign, perhaps of anxiety neurosis) and so we were prepared also to find, as the reader will find, rather too guarded and sensible a daring. Perhaps we will ripen into extravagance. Contributions for the second number should be send to W. Empson of Magdalene College. We five are acting on behalf of the contributors, who have entrusted us with this part of the work. -

THE ILLUSORY DISTINCTION BETWEEN EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY AND EQUALITY OF RESULT DAVID A. STRAUSS* I. INTRODUCTION "Our society should guarantee equality of opportunity, but not equality of result." One hears that refrain or its equivalent with increasing frequency. Usually it is part of a general attack on gov- ernment measures that redistribute wealth, or specifically on af- firmative action, that is, race- and gender-conscious efforts to im- prove the status of minorities and women. The idea appears to be that the government's role is to ensure that everyone starts off from the same point, not that everyone ends up in the same condi- tion. If people have equal opportunities, what they make of those opportunities is their responsibility. If they end up worse off, the government should not intervene to help them.1 In this Article, I challenge the usefulness of the distinction be- tween equality of opportunity and equality of result. -

A SPATIAL HISTORY OF ICARIAN COMMUNISM by John Derek McCorquindale A thesis submitted to the faculty of Brigham Young University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of French & Italian Brigham Young University April 2008 ABSTRACT A SPATIAL HISTORY OF ICARIAN COMMUNISM John Derek McCorquindale Department of French and Italian Master of Arts Prior to the 1848 Revolution in France, a democrat and communist named Étienne Cabet organized one of the largest worker’s movements in Europe. Called “Icarians,” members of this party ascribed to the social philosophy and utopian vision outlined in Cabet’s 1840 novel, Voyage en Icarie , written while in exile. This thesis analyzes the conception of space developed in Cabet’s book, and tracks the group’s actual spatial practice over the next seventeen years. During this period, thousands of Icarians led by Cabet attempted to establish an actual colony in the wilderness of the United States. -

Heavy Metal and Classical Literature
Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal). -

Thus, he was voted a living example of a polymath by Intelligent Life magazine in Reviews Schrijf een review. This is why this book is dedicated to Bruce as a songwriter, as a poet of lyrics, some of which represent little masterpieces - even without music. Their ambiguity holds some surprises. Prior to joining that band Dickinson enjoyed stardom with Samson, while his post-Maiden solo career has brought much critical success. He ate the meal in the secure knowledge that after his death he would return again! The subjects are extremely interesting and Bruce succeeds in artfully getting to the heart of them. Their ambiguity holds some surprises. Not a light read, but entertaining in its own way nonetheless. Bold, honest, intelligent and very funny, his memoir is an up-close look inside the life, heart, and mind of one of the most unique and interesting men in the world; a true icon of rock. All information's there if people choose to dig for it. Bibliografische Informationen. Carlson Publisher: Lulu. This book tells his story through interviews with those who know him best. Quiet reflection has been shown to calm the mind and help retain information. The final rites were performed by the novelist Louis Marlowe reading extracts from Crowley's "Book of the Law". Blaze Bayley, Risactonia, Black Atom @ Caesar's
BLAZE BAYLEY CAESAR’S PALACE, MONDAY 5TH MARCH ‘This is a song about how machines are going to take over the world. Because when that happens, there will be a Second Messiah!’ Like, yeah Blaze, whatever man. Let’s get this straight: I don’t like Iron Maiden. I can’t hear that name without thinking of widdly guitar solos, pompous over-the-top lyrics, grown men in shorts, Dungeons & Dragons, scampi flavour Nik-Naks, sacrificial virgins - you get the picture. So what am I doing at a gig whose main attraction is Blaze Bayley, the man who fronted Maiden through what is considered to have been their worst years? Well, there is the added bonus of Risactonia and Black Atom, two bands that are always good to watch. And I have been informed that Blaze’s solo material sounds nothing like that of his previous employers. Anyway, who can resist a good metal gig? This is Aberdeen after all, a lonely outpost that plays host to such diverse names as David Gray and Coldplay. It’s just too good an opportunity to miss. By the time Blaze come on, a steady crowd has gathered, largely made up of old Maiden fans, who seem to crawl out of the woodwork whenever such events come around, plus a good number of metal kids. Even Fudge decide to grace us with their presence. Black seems to be the colour of choice tonight. The band are dressed in black. The stage is black. And I am wearing, well, white for some reason. The other thing I should mention about the stage is the huge drum-kit that takes up half of it. -
