Solway Branch of CAMRA Autumn 2013 the Campaign for Real Ale fully, many pubs in that category! The Thistle has something you can't buy: it is a genuinely friendly place to have a beer and a natter. This is helped considerably by Fly's sense of humour from the fairy bottle on top of the Christmas tree to the "erly lernin sentor" in the beer garden! There's also a great mix of people of all ages from students through to people even older than Fly! In times of increasing pub closures, par- ticularly in the city's suburbs, it's good to see this community pub is so popular and thriving. The GBG is a unique pub guide in that, unlike other pub guides, the pubs included are se- lected entirely by local members of CAMRA; who else knows the good real ale pubs in their area? Locally, 22 pubs from the Solway branch area are included in the GBG. Some publicans may be disappointed their pub isn't included or that their pub has dropped out of the Guide. This does not mean that CAMRA thinks less of the quality of your real ale or your pub. The Solway branch area has around 150 real ale pubs and, obvi- ously, not all of them can go in the Guide! To give other pubs a chance, and to keep the Guide fresh, we do change pubs each year; so your pub may be in the next GBG!

Of course, we will have real cider and perry available at the Carlisle Beer Apple (the cider and perry campaign group Festival, 31 within CAMRA) is celebrating 25 years of October to 2 campaigning. More and more new brands are appearing, many from previously unlikely sources: the big breweries, who are actively promoting flavoured ciders. So much so that sales of bottled fruit cider sales increased by 67%. But hold on - isn’t this great news? Not really, if you are looking for the real thing! Cider or perries with fruit or flavouring (other than the apples or pears) are NOT real ciders or perries! So, in some ways, CAMRA has done a great job by moving cider and perry up the ladder of acceptability. Just be careful out there as sometimes things aren’t what they seem. Look beyond the branding, the glassware and the gimmicks! Real cider and perry is out there and your mission is to search for it and enjoy!
