KIPPAX, a parish having a pleasant village of its own name, 8 miles E. by S. of , 2 from Gadorth railway station, and 6 N."\V. of Pontcfract, is divided into three townships of Kippax, A.llerton-Bywater and Preston, abounding in coal and limestone, and containing h1gether a population of about 2950 inhabitants, and 3347 acres of fertile land. The township of Kippax has a population of 1656 souls and an area of 1570 acres, and the chief owners of the soil are Mrs. l\Iedhurst, of London, who is lady of the manor; E. Ellerton, Esq. and Thomas Davison Bland, Esq., the latter of whom occupies and owns Kippax Park, in which stands the elegant mansion built by Sir Thomas Bland, Knight, in the reign of Elizabeth, but much enlarged and improved at the close of the 17th century. The Church (St. l\Iary) is au ancient structure, with seyeral monuments of the Bland family. The vicarage, valued at £329, is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor and incumbency of the Rev. Edward Davison Bland, who has a good residence. Here are a free school, infant schools, and chapels belonging ing to the Weslcyans and Primitive Methodists.
