In 2006 the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STEFC) of EU suggested the Black Sea region should be excluded from the list of natural areas, where the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is distributed. The basic conception of this idea was that the eels caught in the Black Sea region represent escaped specimens from fish farming in some Danubian countries. This article illustrates an effort to be given an indirect answer on the question if Black Sea is the end of natural distribution of European eel. The species is present but never been abundant in the region and do not represent an object of commercial fishing. The special hydrographic environment of the world’s largest brackish water system provide promising conditions for the use of otolith elemental analysis to investigate individual migration patterns and stock structures of fish. Here, it was used to gain information with relevance for stock management of fish species that differ widely in their biology, ecology and stock structure. In chapter I the influence of continental migratory behaviour on health and spawner quality of the European eel was analysed. Otolith strontium (Sr) composition was used to identify characteristic migration patterns. Results show that the muscle fat contents of silver eels with strictly catadromous life cycles are significantly reduced compared to silver eels that never entered freshwaters. Furthermore, prevalence and infection intensities of the swimbladder nematode Anguillicoloides crassus are highly increased in catadromous silver eels. Our aim in the pre- sent studies was to elucidate whether the presence of A. crassus in these eels alters their rapid physiological responses to an acute temperature increase, compared to the response of uninfected fish. Both infected and uninfected fish showed significant increases in plasma cortisol after 2 h at a raised environmental temperature with increased plasma glucose after 6 h. However, infected eels exhibited a slight lag in glucose mobilisation, which may be due to the metabolic cost of harbouring a sanguiverous parasite. Both infected and uninfected fish showed a significant increase in haemat- ocrit after 6 h of temperature elevation, but only uninfected fish exhibited a significant increase in haemoglobin at this point. However, there were no significant changes in mean erythrocyte haemo- globin concentration in either group. Our results suggest that acute temperature increase alone is unlikely to cause significant mortality of A. crassus-infected European eels; however, the effects of chronic increases in temperature in combination with other factors such as toxicants and hypoxia requires examination. -

In 2008, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified the European eel as Critically Endangered. • In response to this reported decline, in 2005 ZSL established a monitoring project to determine the recruitment of elvers (juvenile eels) into the River Thames catchment and found a similar reduction. -
