With a string of 19 studio albums and multiple Grammy nominations, Jackson rocketed to stardom with songs including “Is She Really Going Out With Him?”, “Steppin’ Out” and “It’s Different for Girls.” Over a long career Joe has traversed territory ranging from cabaret and film scores to classical music, pop and jump blues. His latest release, Fast Forward, is his first collection of original songs in seven years and features guest musicians including Bill Frisell, Stefan Kruger (Zuco 103), Earl Harvin, and Stanton Moore. His career-spanning Festival show will feature Jackson “as my opening act,” playing a short solo piano set before bringing out a full band which will include Graham Maby bass, Teddy Kumpel (Rickie Lee Jones, Feist) guitar, and Doug Yowell (Suzanne Vega, Ari Hest) drums. Driven by Trucks, #16 of the top 100 Guitarists of All Time (Rolling Stone), and Tedeschi, blessed with a voice that passionately delivers powerful R&B belters to gentle ballads, the group enlists dual drummers, two vocalists, a three-piece horn section, bass, and a multi-instrumentalist keyboard player for a greater- than-the-sum-of-its parts collective. More specifically, I examine how and why often marginalized southern vernacular musicians, especially Mississippi blues singer Robert Johnson, were celebrated during the folk revivals of the 1930s and 1960s as possessing something inherently American, and differentiate these periods of intense interest in the traditional music of the American South from the most recent example of revivalism early in the new millennium.     Laura Veirs Warp and Weft From one of the country’s most inimitable songwriters – Portland, Oregon’s Laura Veirs – comes her ninth full-length album. Beautiful, lush and at times deeply dark, "Warp and Weft" captures the intensity of motherhood, love and violence. Primarily electric-guitar driven, it is a fever dream of an album and could well be Veirs’ best work to date. It builds on the uniform praise and commercial success of 2010's "July Flame," which Utne Reader dubbed “idiosyncratic and captivating” and received glowing reviews from The New York Times, Pitchfork, NPR and others. The recording of "Warp and Weft" (a weaving term) was a community effort. Produced in Portland in March 2013 by Veirs’ longtime collaborator Tucker Martine, the album features Jim James, kd lang, Neko Case, Brian Blade and members of The Decemberists and many more. Veirs sings not only of mid-winter suns, white blossoming cherry trees and melting ice, but also suicide, gun violence and war. She weaves threads of old folk songs including “Motherless Children” as well as stories of folk-art hero Howard Finster and jazz harpist Alice Coltrane. “I think of this record as a tapestry where disparate elements come together and are stronger and more lovely as a result,” says Veirs. Veirs was eight months pregnant with her second child during the recording; she says her experience as a mother brought about some of the more beautiful and painful songs. “I’m haunted by the idea that something terrible could happen to my kids but that fear pushes me to embrace the moment.

    PAUL PIGAT aka COUSIN HARLEY BIOGRAPHY Paul Pigat started playing the guitar at 11 years of age and was gigging steadily in downtown Toronto by the time he was 12. Through a lifetime dedication to live performance, recording and study he has developed into a superb guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Paul attended the Claude Watson School of the Arts and graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music in theory and composition in 1992. He taught at the Eli Kassner Guitar Academy while continuing to explore live performance opportunities with various bands. Shortly thereafter Paul headed for the west coast, where he has made his home since 1994, and has earned a reputation as one of the best guitarists around. An extremely versatile artist, with projects ranging from delta blues to classical music, he heads four diverse Vancouver bands and is in high demand as a sideman, having recorded and toured with the likes of Neko Case, Michael Kaeshammer, and Carolyn Mark, and has shared the stage with Taj Mahal, Mae Moore, Lee Aaron, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Joshua Redman, Big Sandy and His Flyrite Boys, Aaron Neville, Jim Byrnes, Zubot & Dawson, and more. He has played performance venues ranging from small clubs to large stadiums, and festivals covering the entire spectrum of roots, blues, rockabilly and jazz music. He toured the UK with Neko Case in November 2006, and had the honour of performing with Jim Byrnes and Jesse Zubot at the Closing Ceremonies of the 2006 Torino Paralympic Games earlier in the year. Paul’s central touring project is his rocking hillbilly trio, Cousin Harley, considered to be western Canada’s premier rockabilly and roots band.

Baroni Keywords: metal, popular music, popular culture, religion, subculture, Hawai‘i 2 Abstract The island of Oahu is home to probably the most ethnically diverse metal scene in the United States. Contemporary Hawai`i prides itself on being a “model of multiculturalism” free of the racism and ethnic strife that is endemic to the continent; however, beneath this superficial openness and tolerance exist deeply felt class, ethnic, and racial tensions. The metal scene in Hawai`i experiences these conflicting impulses towards inclusion and exclusion as profoundly as any other aspect of contemporary Hawaiian culture, but there is a persistent hope within the metal scene that subcultural identity can triumph over such tensions. Complicating this process is the presence of white military personnel, primarily born and raised on the continental United States, whose cultural attitudes, performances of masculinity, and conception of metal culture differ greatly from that of local metalheads. The misunderstandings, hostilities, bids for subcultural capital, and attempted bridge-building that take place between metalheads in Hawai‘i constitute a subculturally specific attempt to address anxieties concerning the presence of the military, the history of race and racism in Hawai`i, and the complicated, often conflicting desires for both openness and exclusivity that exist within local culture.

    The Roots Report: Joe Jackson at The Strand Okee dokee folks… “It’s Different For Girls” got things going for Joe Jackson on Monday night at The Strand in Providence. Jackson sat down at his digital keyboard and performed a touching, solo rendition of the song from his 1979 album I’m The Man. The refrain, “You’re all the same…” faded the song to the end. He jumped right into the song that introduced most of us to his music, “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” Bassist Graham Maby joined in on this one. When Jackson sang the line, “look over there” the audience shouted back, “WHERE?” and then they joined in singing on the chorus. The remaining members of the band, Teddy Kumpel on guitar and drummer Doug Yowell, took the stage. The background lighting turned a deep purple on the black drapery and Jackson sang the socially poignant “Real Men” from his Night and Day recording. Not missing a beat he launched right into his 1984 hit, “You Can’t Get What You Want (‘Til You Know What You Want).” Though the studio version was horn- heavy, it carried well with the four-piece treatment. After the next song, “A Little Smile,” Jackson commented, “It’s been quite a long time since we’ve been to Rhode Island. We are trying to get to some places that we haven’t been to in a while, or ever. Thanks for being here. We’re going to be trying out some new songs now. Every one starts as a new song at one time.
