Through ethnographic observation, it establishes a spectrum of practices between two main traditions, namely the antique beatas and the modern missionary congregations. The article argues that Chinese nuns create forms of religious life that are quite distinct from more universal Catholic standards: their congregations are always diocesan and involved in multiple forms of apostolate. Despite the little attention they receive, Chinese nuns demonstrate how Chinese Catholics are creative in their appropriation of Christian traditions and their response to social and economic changes. Keywords: christianity in China; catholicism; religious life; gender studies Surveys from 2015 suggest that in the People’s Republic of China, there are 3170 Catholic religious women who belong to 87 registered religious congregations, while 1400 women belong to 37 unregistered ones.1 Thus, there are approximately 4570 Catholics nuns in China, for a general Catholic population that fluctuates between eight to ten million. However, little is known about these women and their forms of religious life, the challenges of their lifestyle, and their current difficulties. Who are those women? How does their religious life manifest and evolve within a rapidly changing Chinese society? What do they tell us about the Catholic Church in China? This paper explores the various forms of religious life in Catholic China to understand how Chinese women appropriate and translate Catholic religious ideals. -

Bulgakov In Memoriam to Ivan Feodorovich Tokmakov1 The political economy of our times belongs to sciences that do not remember their own spiritual kinship. Its origins are lost in the quicksand of philosophy of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. At its cradle stand, on one side, the representatives of the Natural Law doctrine with their belief in the inviolability of human nature and pre-established natural harmony, and, on the other side, preachers of utilitarianism—J. Bentham and his disciples who proceed from the notion of society as a summation of disconnected atoms, mutually jostling representatives of different interests. The society is viewed here as the mechan- ics of these interests, the social philosophy is transformed into the “political arithmetic” of which Bentham dreamt. The political economy assimilated from him is the abstract, one-sided, simplified notion of man, a notion that still reigns in political economy. In this, among other ways, the prerequisite of the classic political economy was formed—the notion of “economic man,” who does not eat and sleep but always calculates interests, seeking the greatest benefit at lowest costs; a slide rule that reacts with mathematical accuracy to the outer 1 Tr. note: Ivan F. Grow Institutional Context: Founded in 1965, the University of Southern Indiana is a regional, teaching-focused public institution, with a student body of 10,500. Students overwhelmingly come from southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and northern Kentucky; a third of students are first-generation to attend college in their family. USI’s campus in Evansville is roughly 25 miles from the town of New Harmony, Indiana, the site of two early-nineteenth-century communal utopias, one founded by a German millennialist group, the Harmonists, and the other founded by social reformer Robert Owen. Over the past fifty years, the town has been restored; Historic New Harmony is jointly administered by the university and by the state of Indiana. The university library’s Special Collections has one of the best manuscript and book collections on communal groups anywhere, with information on over 700 separate communities. In addition, the university has a Center for Communal Studies (which I direct), which promotes the study of historic and contemporary communal groups, utopias, and intentional communities. As such, the History Department has long offered a course in Communal Utopias in America. Course Rationale and Strategy: In this course, I raise several questions about communal groups and new religious movements and the cultural reactions to them. What have been the attractions of these groups? How have these groups challenged American society? How have they evolved over time? How do reactions to them reveal larger cultural values, including attitudes on gender, race, and religion? I have structured the course chronologically. -

Tweed ©2012 Jill Marie Peterfeso ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT JILL MARIE PETERFESO: Transgressive Traditions: Roman Catholic Womenpriests and the Problem of Women’s Ordination (Under the direction of Laurie Maffly-Kipp) Although the Roman Catholic Church bars women from ordained priesthood, since 2002 a movement called Roman Catholic Womenpriests (RCWP) claims to have ordained approximately 120 women as deacons, priests, and bishops in Europe, North America, and Latin America. Because the women deliberately break Canon Law—and specifically c. 1024, which reads, “Only a baptized man can validly receive sacred ordination”—RCWP acknowledges that its ordinations are illegal, but the group claims nonetheless to perform valid ordinations because they stand in the traditional line of apostolic succession. They retain the modifier “Roman” to signal their lineage within Roman Catholic tradition, yet RCWP’s stated goal is not simply to insert women into the existing Church structures, but rather to “re-imagine, re-structure, and re-shape the priesthood and therefore the church.” This dissertation investigates the -

117 Perspectives on Koinonia The Report from the Third Quinquennium of the Dialogue between the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity of the Roman Catholic Church and some Classical Pentecostal Churches and Leaders 1989 Introduction 1. This is a report of conversations held on the international level between the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unityl and some classical Pentecostal churches and leaders. It contains the results of the third phase of dialogue held 1985-1989. 2. Contacts for the dialogue were initiated in 1969 and 1970. Among the topics discussed during the first quinquennium (1972-1976) were Baptism in the Holy Spirit, Christian Initiation and the Char- isms, Scripture and Tradition, and The Human Person and the Gifts. In' the second quinquennium (1977-1982) consideration was given to Faith and Religious Experience, Speaking in Tongues, and Mary. The co-chairpersons during this third quinquennium, 1985-1989, were the Rev. Kilian McDonnell, OSB, Collegeville, Minnesota, USA and the Rev. Justus T. du Plessis of the Apos- tolic Faith Mission of South Africa. The conversations dealt with the subject of the Church as Koinonia. 3. The Rev. David J. du Plessis chaired the Pentecostal delegation during the first two phases of the dialogue. Indeed, the origin of the international Pentecostal/Roman Catholic dialogue, almost twenty years ago, owes much to initiatives he took during and after the Second Vatican Council. David du Plessis continued to take part in the third phase of the dialogue, providing important insights to our deliberations, until his death in 1987. The dialogue commission acknowledges, with gratitude to God, David du Plessis' important contribution to the origin and continuation of our work. -

‘The Registered Papers of the Chief Secretary’s Office’ Tom Quinlan, Archivist, National Archives Journal of the Irish Society for Archives, Autumn 1994 The Registered Papers of the Chief Secretary’s Office consist of two main archival series covering the years 1818 to 1924, together with a number of sub-series of shorter date span within this period: They provide the researcher with valuable primary source material for research into Irish history during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The collection, which forms part of the Irish state papers, is now in the custody of the National Archives and is stored on site at its premises on Bishop Street in Dublin. There is a distinction between archives we describe as state papers and those we call public records which is not always articulated and hence tends to remain vaguely understood, The distinction has its basis in developments in England where the records created by the courts, by commissions of enquiry, and by public offices and boards were regarded as being of a public nature, whereas the records of secretaries of state were viewed as the semi-private papers of a government minister and, as such, were not deemed to be in the public domain. This distinction was given legislative expression in both Ireland and Britain by their respective nineteenth century public records Acts, which preserved and rendered available to the public legal and court records, but which did not extend to the records of secretaries of state or government ministers. (1) Irish state papers are the accumulated documents received or created by the offices of state which, until the termination of direct rule of Ireland by England in 1922, composed the Irish executive, headed by the chief governor of Ireland, and included the Privy Seal Office, the Privy Council Office and the Chief Secretary's Office. -

But in light of digital sustainability, the National Archives has a number of preferred formats for the information supplied by the legal caretakers. This document describes those preferred formats and provides a substantiation for their use. This allows custodians to take sustainable accessibility into account from the inception of their information. Context and cause The document Preferred formats of the National Archives is an elaboration of its Preservation Policy. The Preservation Policy describes the overall policy for preservation, i.e. the way in which the National Archives keeps the digital information it manages authentic and useable. In addition to Preferred formats, the Preservation Policy is elaborated upon in other documents.1 Figure 1 depicts the components of the National Archives’ preservation policy. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church he word November 2017 Volume 16, Issue 9 From the Rector October 2017 Volume 16, Issue 8 In last month’s newsletter I posed the question, “are you going to church, or are you the Church?” I followed that question with the statement that “Church isn’t a place, it’s people.” That statement became very real to me as I attended a workshop on church growth (Invite -Welcome -Connect) in October. I was accompanied by your Senior Warden Linda Cummings and parishioners Debbie Rosse and Kate Wettstein . The workshop facilitator challenged us to look at our current methods of inviting others to church, making them feel welcome and then making them feel “connected” – part of the church. At the workshop, the Invite -Welcome -Connect facilitator shared an anecdote with us. During a break at a workshop she was leading, one attendee from a smaller church came up to her and confided that she “really didn’t want her church to grow” because she liked her church just the way it is. We all have differing levels of comfort with change, and change in our church can be very difficult for some. But churches should never be content to just exist. Churches must be thriving, active in the community, and raising up disciples to share the Good News. But that will never happen if the invitation and the welcome are taken care of by a committee. We are all responsible for inviting and welcoming to church people hungry for the Good News of God’s love.
