FUNDING • It is envisaged that the cost of this development will be substantial • II is hoped to spread this cost more evenly by building this centre on a phased basis • Funding has already been approved by Department Tourism Sport & Recreation • We are currently carrying out a door to door collection • The sum of money to be raised is large and will require a varietyoffund-raisingapproaches to besuccessful. To date a very successful race night and golfclassic have been held. A poker classic has been arranged for 19·October200 I. • The support of all is needed now and overthe next few years in order to get this project completed

MOYLEROVERSGA.A.CLUD The success of Moyle Rovers Senior Football team in winning 5 Tipperary Senior Football titles in the last 6 years and in reaching today's final has an enonnous impact on the community and is one of the motivating forces behind the new development at Moyle Parle

Thissuccess can be measured in manyway,$: The support that they get from the community altendinggames. • The numbers attending under age training. Over 100 young boys and girls are under 10 years of age,lum up aI Moyle Park every Friday evening for training. • 300 400 between children and adults avail ofthe facilities at Moyle Park everyweek. • Moyle Rovers are South Tipperary Football winners this year at under 12; 14; 16 and 18.

The unselfish work of pi ayers, fonnerplayers and others in the community in training all those young players is to beadmired.

The sporting exploits of AII·Star at both hurling and footbal l and Derry Foley being a member of the Ire land Team in the International Series has imbued a spirit of pride in our community.

MOYL E ROVERS-COMMUN ITY ORGANISATIONS By coming together with the organisations in the community to fonn Monroe Development Committee, Moyle Rovers have shown the interest they have in the mental. Physical and recreational development of the youth in the community.

Monroe Development Committee wil l endeavour that Monroe Sports & Leisure Complex will be a fitting tribute to the lale Michael McCarthy and John Burke for their lives of unselfish work for Moyle Rovers and the community.

Best ofLuck to Ballingarry Senior Team in the ~, South Final & Co. Quarter Final .~ ~ e; MOYLE ROVERS JUVENILES

by PJ. Dolan

When Jimmy McCarthy, secretary orMoylc Rovers, announced at the slart of the year that the McCarthy family intended to sponsor the U 12A , U 14A and U 16A South football championships in memory of the great Mick R.I.P. surely he couldn't have envisaged himselfhaving to present all three trophies to young captains wearing the famed sky bluc and navy of his own club. But such was the success orMoyle Rovers' underage teams this season.

The U 16's became South A Champions following a nailbiting draw and replay against a talented team. Understrength due to absentees and injuries, they losl out to -Glengoole in the county semi-final. The U-14'5, fo llowing a narrow win over Ardfinnan in the South A final, went on to make club history bybecoming U 14Acountychampions for the thi rd time in a row, defeating Rock Rovers in Cahir. In hurling they managed to reach the South semi-final, putting on a good pcrfonnance against Carrick Swan. They also had some success in ground hurling, winnmg the losers group in the Loreto tournament. In what was a busy year forthis panel of players they also competed in Feile Pei! na nOg, though they had linle chance of success here due 10 fatigue, with this competition taking place so soon after the county championship.

Not to be outdone, the U 12's captured their South A football title against Commercials and after a long wait, they too became worthy county champions, defeating Aherlow in Clonmel a few weeks ago. While they managed to reach the South UI2A hurling final for the second year in a row they were pipped by St. Mary's, but how encouraging it is to see MoyJe Rovers teams playing the 'small ball'gameat the highest level!

The U 10,s and US,s are thankfully turn ing out in large num bers fo r train ing and are having lots of success in both hurling and football toumamentswhich augurs well forthe futureofthe cl ub.

A well-attended and most enjoyable summer camp was held in July, with up to two hundred boys and girls advancing theirskills in hurling and football.

A major factor in the success of Moyle Rovers Juvenile Club is the large number ofaduhs who give unselfishly of their time for the benefit of our youngsters, so a special word of thanks must go today to our hardworking secretaries, coaches and se lectors.

Al l successful clubs need good leadership and we are lucky to have at the top table a man of boundless energy and enthusiasm in chainnan Declan McGrath, ably assisted by vice chainnan John Keating, secretary Eileen Boland, assistant secretary I p. r.o. Marie Burke and treasurer Seamus Norris.

Today's appearance will be the Cahir C lub's fifth South Final, which seems a small return for over a century of senior football in the parish. There were in fact two senior footha lltearns registered with the GA.A. in 1887, i.c. Cahir Faughan-Ballagh and Poulmucka.

1923 Cahir had a fine team, with Jimmy McNamara an All-Ireland S.F. medal winner in 1920 and Gus O'Dwyer& Wi lliam 'Ban' Burke, J.F. AII-Ireland winners in 1923 . They lost to the great Fethard team by 2-4100-4 after 2 draws.

The team was: Wm. Burke (Capt.); Jimmy McNamara; Dave Barry; John O'Leary; Gus O'Dwyer; Tom Walsh; Pat McGrath; Ja mes Ryan ; James O'Conne ll ; Fred Gregg; Tom Lee; James Guidera; Tom O'Neill ; Jimmy Kennedy; Jim Marshbanks.

1957 Having been Junior and having won two County Titles in 1952 and 1955, Cahir were back in the Final after 34 years again against Fethard. Once again they were unlucky to lose to a number of soft goals on a score of3-5 to 1-7.

TheCahir Slashers team was: J im Armitage; Sean Walsh; Mick Fox; Tom Walsh; Davy Aheame; Pat Walsh; Brendan Normoyle; Eamon Keating; ; Paddy McGrath; Paddy Saunders (Capt.); Michael Moroney; Jim Buckley; Billy Moroney. Sub: Michael Walsh for Buckley.

1959 Cahir reached the final following a number of tough games and once again the opposition were Fethard, thi s tim e, following a low scoring first halfFetnard 2 pts, Cahir 1 pi, Cah ir Slashers eventua ll y won by 1- 3 to 5 points.

This historic team was: Tom Kelly; JamesArmitage; Pat Walsh; Richie Delahunty; Davy Fitzgerald; Tom Walsh; Sean Walsh; Willie Leahy; Davy Ahearne; Joe Doherty; Michael Walsh; Denis Halpin; Davy "Boots" Fitzgerald; Paddy Saunders(Capl.); Jim Buckley.

An interesting link with that team isGer Leahy oftoday's panel, who is a son of Willie.

1980 Having won the Co. I.F. in 1979 and Ihe 1980 S.F. League, Cahir faced a fine Felhard team going for three-in-a-row. Having missed a penally to draw level mid way through the second half, Cahir eventually lost on a score of 0-11 to 0-04.

The team was: Can Murphy; GerO'Brien; John Quirke; Eddie Lonergan; Tommy Farrell; Joe Casey; Jim O'Leary; Jim Doolan; Tom Barrett; Simon Sunderland; Calm O'Flaherty (Capt.); Tony O'Su ll ivan; Anthony O'Brien; Sean Casey; Ger Ward. Subs: Joe Barrett; Matty McEniry.

Eddie Lonergan, comer back that day is secretary of the club, while Paddy and Kieran O'Flaherty of today's panels are sons ofCa lm . Tom Hogan Motors

Cahir GA.A. club has gone into fast forward on the development front over the past 4/5 years under the Chairmanship of Pat Hyland ably assisted by treasurer Tom O'Donnell who has the onerous task of looking after the now large amount of money passing through the club and of course long term secretary Eddie Lonergan (he thinks he is secretary since 1982). What we thought was a big job on the Dressing rooms was completed last year and before we could take a rest afier this the opportunity to acquire a second pitch came up. Though the timing could have been beuer. the club decided the opportunity of becoming involved in the exciting Duneske Sports & Leisure project might not arise again and we committed ourselves as one third partners in this undertaking to take sport & leisure faci lities for the town and surrounding areas into the 21" Century. The remaining two partners in the project are the Cahir Development Association and Colaiste Dun Jascaigh. The plan is to provide extra playing fields for the Secondary schooL to build a Sports & Leisure Complex along with a ll weather facilities and to provide a second pitch for Cahir G.A.A. who now cater for 20 teams consisting ofAdult, Juvenile, Ladies Football and Camogic. Funds for lhis project are currently being raised through a massive LoLlo syndicate comprising of 1000 members. CahirG.A.A. must sell one third of these tickets (330) at £20 a month each to pay for our portion of the project. All Gaels and people with interest in youth and sports generally are asked to respond favourably to support this initiative.

SEAN BRETT: THE FORGOTTEN HURLER

Scan Brett who was born in 1967 is 34 this year. By the time that they were that age, Alexander Ihe Great and Napolean had conquered most of the known world and indeed Jesus Christ had completed his work ofsav ing the same planet. Still, thc Mullinahone veteran goes on as enthusiastic and dctcnnincd now as he was when he first played on Mullinahonc adult teams almost 20 years ago. Sean played on lhe Mullinahone Icam which won the South TippJunior Hurling Tille in 1985. lie was also there in 1986whcn Ballinganybeal Mullinahone anera replayed linal in the same championship, the sianing point of loday's rivalry and also the starling point of Mullinahonc's risc to hurling eminence. Sean became a county foolballcr and played in theAlllrciand minor final of 1984. In those days, it was the thing for Mullinahonc's young men to aspire to. Scan made his mark in football circles, but ever the loyal clublllan, he too put his considemble hurling talents. not least of which was detennination. at the disposal of "the green above the red". lie was an outstanding fullback on the MullinahOlle team of 1988, which brought thc county under2 1B double tothe club. By now the'Leahy faclOr' had emerged in Mullinahone hurling and the rise to hurling heights was 011. In 1990 Seun made the Tipp Junior hurling teum which reached the All Ireland final against Kilkcnny. This game was played in O'Moore Park, Portlaoise. Sean gave a wonderful display at comer back, but Tipp 1051. The greatness of Scan Brett is not measured in honours won but in obstacles overcollle. At the peak of his cureer, Scan was sidelined with cruciate trouble. Not once, but twice, did Scan battle back to fitness to play in two MunsterSenior Football finals in the mid 1990's. With such example in Mullinahone can anybody doubt that John Leahy will again hurl for Tipp? An essential part of Mull ina hone's hurling odyssey through the nineties which saw the county final appearance of I 997 one of Scan's proudest moments was last December when he led the club to a county intemlediate football victory and back into senior football ranks. Married 10 the fonner Aine O'Sullivan with one son Cathal (the makings of a centre back is the TUmour) retirement must figure on Sean's agenda. Perhaps before he takes that final step there is just one more great challenge for Mullinahone's forgotten hurler to overcome.

Figuressay: Since Mullinahone won their first South Tipp Senior Hurling Title in 1993 they have repeated the feal every other year in 1995, 1997, 1999. Thisis2001. Underage Level: Ilaving gone through a lean spell for some years at underage level, Mullinahone could be on the way back. This year they appeared in 3 underage finals and won the U I 2B double in football and hurling. Four of the players on those teams, Scan Quirke, Kevin Walzer, Niall O'Brien and Richie Morrissey play in today's mini-games. Six orthe best: l ias a South Tipp SH final ever involved 6 players who were members of an All Ireland winning Tippcrdry Senior Ilurling panel? Today's patrons can see Ballingarry's and MulJinahone'sJohn Leahy, Brian O'Meara, Paul Kelly, Eo;n Ke llyand Paul Curran

Odds and Ends: Scan Foxe(Mullinahone) won theSouthTipp FeileSkillscol11petition in 1991 . Liam Cahill (Ballingarry) won the "Player of the Tournament" in the Tony Forristal 14 tournament in 1991. Eoin Kelly(Mullinahone)repcated the feat in 1996. Three ofMlillillOhollc's hurlers played with 1ippJunior FOOIbol/ers in the Munster Fi1Wlthis year. The "big ball" men were Pot Croke, Eddie Corcyand POIlI Cohill. In Tipperary's N.II.L. win this year all of Mull ina hone's "Famous Five" played a part on the field of play in either the semi-final or final against Galway and Clare. In the 1987 South 1ipp Junior lIurlillg championship Bollingorry's second string defeated MlIllinohone's besl in /hefirsl round. Six years loler A,'/II/1inohonc won their firsl SOlllh TippSenior hurling litle. In 1993 Mullinahone faced Ballingarry in senior hurling for the first time at half-time the score was Ballingany4-6 Mullinahone 0-6. By full-time "the poor junior leam" had come back to win by 2- 18t04-7 and their rivals.
