Register of Medical Cadet Corps 000016
Heritage Room Ella Johnson Crandall Memorial Library Union College Lincoln, Nebraska April 18, 2014 Processed by Sabrina Riley Medical Cadet Corps (000016)
Scope and Content
The Seventh-day Adventist Medical Cadet Corps started at Union College in January 1934 under the direction of Everett N. Dick. It was originally called the Medical Corps and its intent was to train young Adventist men in military etiquette and medical skills to prepare them for military service as conscientious objectors. Over the next several years other Adventist colleges adopted the program and when World War II erupted in Europe the denomination formally adopted the program. During World War II the training program was active throughout the United States. It was reactivated during the Korean conflict and was adopted by Adventists in many countries around the world during the 1950s. In the late 1950s and 1960s, the MCC declined in popularity and was discontinued altogether in the United States with the end of conscription.
This collection is Everett Dick’s personal files and records collected during his years of leadership of the Union College Medical Corps and the Seventh-day Adventist Medical Cadet Corps from 1934 to 1958. The collection includes correspondence, daily camp orders, curriculum materials, publications, photographs, audio cassettes, 16mm film, uniforms, insignia, and more related to the operation of the MCC.
Arrangement
The arrangement of the collection has been done by the Union College Library Heritage Room.
Provenance
This collection was transferred from Everett Dick’s home to the Union College Heritage Room either by Dick himself or following his death when his research and family papers were transferred to the library.
