  • The Central Regions and the Sofia Agglomeration Area
Maria Shishmanova THE CENTRAL REGIONS AND THE SOFIA AGGLOMERATION AREA Abstract. The research presents central regions in Bulgaria using taxonometric method with relevant conclusions. Each municipality in central regions is particularly examined by the elaborated methodic materials. The developed agglomeration areas are situated in the central regions. Sofia agglomeration area is presented using General Spatial Plan of Sofia municipality and Municipal Development Plan (MDP) of Sofia metropolitan municipality. It is set out the vision of development and its priorities, objectives and measures. Key words: central regions, agglomeration areas, Sofia agglomeration area, General Spatial Plan, Municipal Development Plan. Introduction The Central regions comprise 45 percent of the Bulgarian territory. The agglomeration areas are formed in them. The present study examines the development of the Sofia agglomeration area – a metropolis in the central regions of Bulgaria. The agglomeration areas are formed within the range of the central regions in Bulgaria – 6 agglomeration areas with a center – a large city, 30 agglomeration areas with a center – a medium-sized town. Six of the agglomeration areas are formations with more than three municipalities, five of them are with three municipalities each, ten are with 2 municipalities and the rest 15 are autonomous municipalities with an established core. These areas represent the backbone of the economy and social and human potential of the country. They have the highest degree of competitiveness and attractiveness for investment and innovation. Eighty eight municipalities with a total population of 5885455 people1 are included within the scope of the agglomeration areas, which constitutes 77.4 percent of the population of the country.

His/DIY 5/11dies Volume 13 History 5wdies Volume 13 deeds, goodness and devotion to God and Ireland's orphaned children, Steiner certainly deserved a specially exalted place in Immediate Effects of the 1877-1878 Russo-OUoman heaven and the right (Q veneration by future generations and it War on the Muslims of Bulgaria is probable that during his lifetime the children he helped and Pinar Ore the people whose lives he touched used the term 'saintly' to describe the work and devotion of the "wee old Brother". The political and diplomatic consequences of the 1877-8 Russo-Turkish War had significant effects on both the domestic politics of Russian and Ottoman Empires and on European diplomacy. Leaving its political outcomes aside, the war had a considerable impact on the civilian population of Balkan Peninsula. While the 1877-1878 War had been widely studied through a diplomatic angle, more work is needed to shed light on its social repercussions. In the scope of this paper, the immediate effeclS of the 1877-8 Russo-Turkish War on the civilian Muslim population of Bulgaria will be briefly portrayed. The 1877-8 War forced thousands of civilians, mostly Muslims, to leave their homes. These population movements irreversibly changed the demographic structure of the region. Not only during the War but also in the years following it, the newly independent nation-states in the Balkan Peninsula pursued policies that favoured ethnic homogenisation, which left minority groups in a precarious situation. In essence, the 1877-8 Russo-Turkish War was more than a political game between Russia, the Ouoman Empire, and European stales.

  • Detection of Local Homoclimates in Bulgaria by Numerical Analysis
Detection of similar Homoclimates by Numerical Analysis Alexander N. Sadovski Bulgarian Science Center of the IEAS Corresponding Author: Alexander N. Sadovski, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Numerical methods including cluster analysis, similarity measures and other techniques were used to compare climatic data from Bulgarian stations in order to classify them according similar homoclimate. Using Euclidean distance and City-block (Manhattan) distance, data from Bulgaria and states of the USA were analyzed to reveal homoclime. Similarities in conditions for growth and development of crops of these areas were also determined. Key words: homoclimate, homoclime, cluster analysis, similarity measures. Introduction In many fields including agroclimatology, pedology, plant introduction, environmental health and agricultural transfer, detection of areas of similar climate is of significant interest. It helps in solving completely different problems like allocation of appropriate agricultural crops to given areas and evaluation of bioclimatic resources in connection with genetic status of population on certain locations. Definition of homoclime (Merriam-Webster): a climatically similar environment; specifically: a region climatically similar to another specified region Several authors have carried out comparisons of climate in different parts of the world. The term "homoclime" is used by Prescot (1938) for areas with similar climate. Others have used the term "homoclimate" (Meigs, 1953). Russell and Moore (1970) give the exact definition of both terms. The term homoclimate refers to two or more stations that possess a similar climate, whereas the term homoclime refers to areas or regions, which possess similar climate. So comparisons are made between meteorological stations and they define homoclimates (Russel, 1982). In the case of considering local conditions on small confined locations we are using term "local homoclimates".
