Noorul Islam Educational Trust, founded byeducationist Dr. A.P Majeed Khan, has made a strong presence in the field of higher education for past 61 years. His vision has brought revolutionary changes in the field of higher education in this part of our country. The first ITI of Kerala state in the private sector was from NI educational trust. NIMS MEDICITY is the first venture of NI educational Trust in

healthcare sector. With the vision ‘health care to all irrespective of

wealth’ NIMS Medicity under the guidance of NI Trust has been

introducing various projects and schemes for Heart Surgeries and

other treatments to those who suffer in the black alleys of the society.

Calender 2020-21 15 FACILITIES

NIMS Medicity is situated at Neyyattinkara in 24 acres of land, clothed with modern buildings and facilities. NIMS Medicity nests forty speciality departments headed by eminent doctors from the respective fields. Altogether NIMS Medicity avails service of 170 efficient and trained doctors with 40 departments. Cardiology, , Neurology, Gynecology, Pediatric, ENT, Ophthalmology, Urology, Pain And Palliative, General , Orthopedic, General Surgery, Keyhole Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Radiology, Gastroenterology, Diabetology, Neuro Surgery, Anesthesia, Dermatology, Cardio vascular Surgery, Neonatology, etc. are some of the main departments. The Dental College and Nursing College are situated in the premises of the NIMS Medicity. Both these institutions are a relief to the patients and a place of wisdom for the students. Dental College provides good service and treatment to the patients. The students get practical training from lectures and tutors who are academically brilliant and have proved excellence in their field. NIMS Dental College students could bag 96% result in the last academic year. NIMS Medicity is proud to have a separate well equipped Cardiology wing for Heart Foundation, the only one of its kind in Kerala headed by Dr.Madhu Sreedharan. The Heart Foundation is rich in ultra modern life saving equipments and is intended to save life at any humanly possible condition. The quality of treatment offered is uncompromised. To make Heart treatments more accessible even to those who belong to financially backward class, the expenses that may be incurred for the cardiac checkups and surgeries have been reduced than that of the governments rates. NIMS Heart Foundation has successfully done higher number of heart surgeries in Kerala after Ernakulam District. This achievement is because of the team work of Dr. Madhu Sreedharan and Dr. Mahadevan with their well trained, experienced team. Apart from this, a special project named Heart to Heart has been introduced.

Calender 2020-21 16 We are proud to announce that Padmasree Bharath Mammootty is our Heart to Heart project ambassador. With the association of Mammootty

and welfare society we provide free heart surgeries to those who are under the poverty line. Totally 240 Free Byepass surgeries have been completed successfully and have gone back to normal life with new hopes

and aspirations. With time, there was a huge increase in the number of patients coming to our center from Nagercoil to Kollam, apart from patients from Maldives and the Middle East. The combination of advanced

technology along with round the clock individualized care at affordable price has resulted in our wide acceptance in South Kerala & Tamil Nadu.

NIMS Institute of Liver Studies and Digestive Sciences aim to provide

Calender 2020-21 17 OUR SOCIAL COMMITMENTS

NIMS Medicity, as in the field of health service, marks its unavoidable presence in other activities regarding society welfare through various projects as mentioned below. The health and living standards of the people in and around Neyyatinkara are monitored by NIMS Medicity. To the students in these areas NIMS Medicity provide educational accessories and allied facilities. Students who are studying in higher secondary are being sponsored by NIMS Medicity.

Apart from the camps conducted under the Heart to Heart project, various other projects are conducted by NIMS Medicity, in association with Kudumbasree units, various Govt. agencies, Muncipalities, Grama Panchayats etc. through which a lot of people enjoy, free checkups and treatments.

On introducing Fibro Scan Machine, the first time in South India NIMS has conducted Liver Disease detection camps in the hospital premises. About 850 persons attended the medical camp, out of which 67 persons were newly detected to be suffering from liver cirrhosis. These patients were allowed various subsidized treatment benefits by NIMS Liver Institute. About 350 persons were tested for Hepatitis B and C free of cost at the camp. Those who attended the camp through the registration process were offered liver scan at the subsidized rate of 3,000 INR. They were also allowed a discount of 20 percent in the blood tests done for assessing liver damage and ultrasound scans.

NIMS Medicity celebrated the World Heart Day every year. All the 290 free heart surgery patients gathered in the function and the free Cardiac camp conducted in the NIMS hospital. Shri. Mammooty interacted with the patients in person. It was taken the decision of providing 290 more free heart surgeries on the second phase of the Heart to Heart project.

Calender 2020-21 18 FREE CIVIL SERVICE TRAINING

Noorul Islam Civil Service Training Academy (NICS) , and initiative started by Noorul Islam University & NIMS Medicity with the prayers & blessings of the renowned Gandhian & social worker Hon .P. Gopinathan Nair was inaugurated on October 2011. NICS as its first phase intends to provide motivation in the field of civil service programme for young, energetic and dynamic students in the range of standard 8th to 12th . NICS is having two programmes:

1. P. Gopinathan Nair Civil Service Programme: It is aimed at th creating young talented students from 8 to 12th standared and moulding them to be a bureaucrat with social commitments.

2. NIMS Civil Service Programme: It is intended to help the ongoing civil service aspirants.

Water supply project

Kerala is a state blessed with abundant rainfall. But unfortunately we suffer the scarcity of pure drinking water especially in rural areas. Hence NIMS joins hands with socio-economic unit foundation to provide water irrigation plants in schools, primary health centers, Anganwadis, colonies, etc. situated in rural areas. NIMS HARITHAKAM

In this era of global warming and other related ecological crisis, it is highly essential to make children aware of the benefits of preserving nature and our eco system. Shady trees are always a blessing to the travelers. NIMS has taken up the mission of planting 1,00,000 shady fruit trees in association with concerned municipalities and Schools. Altogether 2000, fruit trees have been planted in

Calender 2020-21 19 and around Trivandrum so far. Under this programme we have celebrated world water day which gave awareness to thousands. The project has got tied up with WWF and Cuter for environmental studies. Also we have organized various programmes in association with Central NCC Unit, Kerala State.

After closely monitoring our social activities and convinced on our social commitments, WWF Kerala is in tie up with us. Together we are promoting various environmental activities. We have joined hands with WWF for the last two years for conducting Earth Hour 2010 and Earth Hour 2011.

We make it a point to celebrate various days for promoting different socially relevant ideas and slogans. For example we celebrated Dec 1st , World Aids Day,with a poster displayed at Trivandrum Secretariat Junction styled “Nombarakaazhchakal”. 2011 Children Day Celebration was with the occupants of General Hospital Paediatric ward to promote vegetable cultivation at household we started a program called “Krishi Veedinte Ayswaryam’(Cultivation, a boon to every home) which bagged great responses and “NIMS Natural Farming’ a zero bedget farming for human being with spending little money and produce poison less food.

We made martyr’s memorable by our “Snehathalam” Program with the mental patients of mental health center, Trivandrum. To promote the importance of water conservation we conducted “Jala Souhreda Sayahnam” on 22nd March 2011. On World Health Day, 2011 we conducted a seminar titled “Jeevithathirakkum Arogyavum”. Thus along with conventional treatment we are providing society with information and supports trying our level best to up bring the common folk to a healthy living.

Calender 2020-21 20 FREE HEART SURGERIES

On the occasion of World Heart Day Celebrations-2009 it is planned to conduct 100 heart surgeries for those who are financially challenged. Free Cardiac camps, in association with Mammotty Fans Associations at various rural areas organized. From there those who need heart surgeries and treatment were referred to the corresponding Mammootty Fans Association Offices. From among them Padmasree Bharat Sri Mammootty has selected patients who were below poverty line, who were eligible for free heart surgery.

NIMS Heart Project has served 240 poor families absolutely free of cost and on World Heart Day Celebration 2011, Shri. Mammootty has announced the pleasant news of providing more free heart surgeries from the patients of poor family. Three children suffering from congenital heart disease belonging to the poor families in Africa were proposed to conduct free surgeries in NIMS Medicity.

NIMS FREE DIALYSIS SCHEME

NIMS is the only hospital in South Kerala performing 1400 dialysis a month. NIMS Medicity in association with HKL-Kerala-a charity health project from Sree Foundation from December 2010 to November 2011, completed 1000 totally free dialysis to downtrodden category patients. NI trust funding to assist the financially week patients is very high when compared to any other hospitals. The trust had sponsored 1000 dialysis starting from 10th of November 2010 to 31st of December 2011.

Calender 2020-21 21 HEART CARE CENTERS

When we talk of emergencies, during cardiac problems,which demands urgent care and treatment, many a time a calamity happens due to wastage of time to reach a cardiac centre. NIMS Medicity’s main aim is to reduce that risk. In connection with the World Heart Day Celebrations, tie ups were made with heart care centers in two municipalities- Varkala and Kottayam for providing better facilities and speedy care for the needy.

HEALTH TOURISM

People around the globe are suffering with various diseases but are compel to pay a lot of money for the cure. In India we offer the best treatment at a lower expense. Hence people are wiling to come to India especially to South Kerala for the treatment. In NIMS we have all international quality equipments and a specialized pay ward- Andreas Gruentzig Memorial Block (AG Block) for treating international patients. We have tie ups with various resorts in Kerala so that after treatment they can enjoy the natural beauty of our state. At present we have patients from Maldives, Kasakistan and from various parts of Europe.

Upcoming Projects

All the projects undertaken in NIMS are completely funded by NI educational Trust. International Cancer Research Institute, Human genetics and Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, Tertary level Multi speciality hospital in remote areas of Mladives are few upcoming project of NIMS with a vision to provide Cancer treatment, Prevent - control- Manage genetic disorders, etc for patients at low cost with international standards.

ABOUT OUR COLLEGE The institution is recognized by DCI and affiliated to Kerala University of Health Science, one of the top medical universities in India. The college was started in the year 2006 with intake of 50 undergraduate seats. P.G. Programmes in 2, dental specialities recognized by DCI is available. COLLEGE TIMINGS AND LECTURE CLASSES The college timings are from 8.00A.M to 2.00 pm Students are supposed to reach the college before 7.45 am. At 7.45 am attendance will be taken Students reaching the college after 7.50 am won’t allowed to enter the classroom. The students who come late should report to the co- ordinator. Students giving lame excuses will be send to the library and will be allowed to attend the classes only from the next hour onwards. Classes are taken by faculty by making use of all modern amenities in a perfect class environment with LCD projector, Computer system etc. Public Address System with Wireless Mike is installed in all lecture halls. DRESS CODE: The budding dentist in the school of Dentistry will soon be metamorphose into full fledged doctors , so the institution is very keen that they should maintain dignity in their dress while inside the campus. The dress codes for boys and girls is as follows: Every student should wear Apron. They are not allowed to enter inside the campus without identity cards. The college will provide Apron and Identity card for all the students.

Calender 2020-21 28 BOYS: Off white shirt and light chocolate colour pants. GIRLS: Off white top and light chocolate pant with light chocholate shawls. Boys are not supposed to wear chappals inside the campus. They have to wear only formal shoes either Black or Brown. They are not allowed to wear sports shoes inside the campus. Girls should put up their hair nicely and unwanted ornaments are not allowed.

DISCIPLINE: • Mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the college campus and hostel. We are providing telephone facilities for the students to call their parents. • Strict discipline will be maintained inside the campus. We are assuring that this is not to harass the students. This to make them well mannered and well knowledged doctors in future. • A disciplinary committee is there in our college which includes teaching staff and non teaching staff. • The members of the committee will be available in the college, throughout working hours especially during the break hours to ensure discipline among the students. • Separate common rooms are there for Boys & Girls. During break hours students are suppose to sit only in the common room and not in the class room. • During college hours students are suppose to see visitors only with the permission of the Co-ordinator. ATTENDANCE: Unauthorised absence wont be tolerated. If any of the student is absent for any unavoidable reason their guardian or parent should make a phone call to the co-ordinator and explain the reason for absence. They should bring the leave letter when they come to enter the college the next day, otherwise they wont be allowed. For day scholars guardian or parent should sign the leave letter. Hostellers should get signature from the warden. Students who are not attending classes because of illness, should submit medical certificate. · 80% attendance is mandatory to appear for University Examinations. Every month, attendance percentage will be send to the university and the university will finalize the students who are eligible for examination.

Calender 2020-21 29 SERIES TESTS (MONTHLY & OTHER EXAMINATIONS) We have become the best Dental College among the other colleges coming under KUHS. · We are conducting monthly examination for the students· · Apart from these monthly examinations we conduct retests for the failed students every month. · Three internal exams are conducted. These internal examination marks will be sent to the University and they will finalize the students who are eligible for University examination. · After finishing the examinations we announce the results within 1 week and it will be put up on the notice board. · We send the progress reports to the parents. · Parents can come to the college and have discussions with the teaching staffs during working hours. · We also maintain log book for each student. This includes their personal academic marks of the students. When parents visit the college they can see this log book and analyze their ward’s performance. SMS: Day to day activities will be informed to the parents through SMS. PTA MEETING We conduct PTA meeting after each internal examination. All parents should attend the Parents Meeting regularly. On that day you are able to meet co-ordinators and teachers.

SPECIAL CLASSES: Students should attend the special classes after the class hours. SEMINARS & PROJECT WORK: Every month we are conducting seminars, and continous educational programs for the staff and students by distinguished guests. Inaddition of this all the departments are conducting regular seminars. Students should submit all the practical works assignment and project work on the stipulated time without fail.

CLINICS, LAB & WORKSHOP: The college has modern clinical departments laboratories with state of the art equipments for clinical, preclinical and basic sciences. The institution conducts series of workshops to encourage students to work on their own projects. This would stand them in good stead to make substantial contributions to dentistry in the future. Calender 2020-21 31 NIMS SUPERSPECIALITY HOSPITAL(NABH ACCREDITED) This is one of the biggest hospitals in South Kerala and is part of and situated with in the campus of dental college. Our students are trained in medical clinical subjects like General Medicine, General Surgery, Aneasthesia here. Our house surgeons also get trained in emergency and casualty management. LIBRARY: The college has a well-stocked library equipped with latest Medical and Dental books. There are books written by famous authors providing up to date knowledge on a variety of subjects. Students will find that there is no dearth of good books to advance in knowledge. The library is fully computerized with internet facility and a reference wing for studies & research. CD ROMS on different dental topics, lectures of eminent doctors, reports on diagnosis and discoveries enables the students to keep in touch with all latest developments in dental sciences. LIBRARY RULES: • All students & staff of the college shall become members of the library. • Please maintain strict silence in the library. Use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited. If any user is found talking on the phone strict action will be taken against that person. Combine study and group discussions are not allowed in the library. • Those who enter the library should sign the register kept at the entrance. • Students are expected to be co-operative in keeping the library neat, tidy and orderly. • Students are supposed to keep their bags, personal reading material and other belongings in the Property Counter. The Library Staff is not responsible for the loss or damage of the student’s belongings. • Students should not wear overcoat inside the library. • The book issue counter will be closed 15 minutes prior to the closing of the library working hour. • Books will be issued only on production of Library identity cards. Members are responsible for the books borrowed on their ID cards. Loss of identity cards must be promptly reported to the Librarian. Duplicate identity cards will be issued on payment. • Those books stamped with “Reference only” are not allowed to be taken away from the Library without permission.

Calender 2020-21 32 • Books taken for vacation shall be returned/renewed on due date. • Transfer or sub-lending of books is strictly prohibited. Marking, underlining etc in any book or magazine is forbidden. Students shall bring to the notice of Librarian, if any damage is present in the book while borrowing. Failing which they will be held responsible for such damage. Compensation for books lost/damaged or defaced shall be paid by the borrower. • All library books & cards must be returned before University exams. Clearance from the library is mandatory for getting hall ticket. • Photocopies of material held in the library shall be provided at nominal charge, subject to copyright regulations. • No Library belongings shall be taken out of the library without permission. • Unnecessary arguments with Library staff is not entertained. • The Librarian has the right to request a user to leave the premises if he/she is found to be violating any of the Library rules. USING COMPUTERS: In library computers can be used only for Academic Purposes. Do not install or uninstall any program or service in any computer. This is only a preserve of the Librarian. If any device of the computer is not working , do not try to fix it individually instead kindly report to the staff in charge. You are allowed to use the computer on the scheduled time allocated by the librarian. Do not send jobs for printing, it is not allowed. If necessary contact the Library staff. HOSTEL:

The college provide separate hostel for boys and girls giving them comfortable bording of a lodging facilities. Hostels have 24 hours security. Both the boys and girls hostel have well experienced Wardens and Supervisor. Before going home parents should inform to the coordinator through telephone. Only after getting parents permission, students leave letter will be accepted. Coordinator will sign the Gate Pass. Students should show the Gate Pass to the Warden.

Calender 2020-21 33 When the students are going home parents should make sure that they return immediately after the holidays and start attending classes without fail. Overstaying after the holidays will not be allowed under any circumstances. HOSTEL RULES The following rules will be implemented for the boys and girls hostel by the hostel authorities Only two gate passes will be allowed for the students for going home and outside per month. Before going, parents should get permission from Co-ordinator before two days and students should give leave letters to the Co- ordinator and students should show gate pass to the warden. Over staying in home is not allowed. After the college hours students are not allowed to go outside from the hostel. For going to library they should get pass from Co-ordinator and show this pass to Librarian and Warden. Hostlers are not allowed to go and sit in others room. Authorities can check the rooms at any time. Laptops and mobile phones are not permitted to be used inside the hostel. Students can give mobile phones to the warden. Only with the presence of warden they can use mobile phone. Students are not permitted to go inside the hospital premises during night hours. During emergency situations students can get permission from warden and one of the hostel authorities should accompany with them to hospital. Day scholars are not allowed to enter into the college hostel rooms. Under any special circumstances they have to take pass from the co- ordinator. Students are instructed to switch off lights and fan of their rooms before going out. Students are not allowed to take newspapers to their rooms.

Calender 2020-21 34 MEASURE TO PREVENT RAGGING: Our college is a ragging free college until now not even a sigle case of ragging has been reported. The Supreme Court has declared that ragging and any form of abetment to ragging causing injuring or Subjecting anyone to forceful confinement, Physical and Sexual assents would now be treated as a criminal offence. And as in the case of section 498A dealing with cruelty towards woman the burden of proof would be on the accused rather than the victims of ragging. If any incident of ragging comes to the notice of the authority the concerned student shall be given liberty to explain and if his explanation is not found satisfactory, the authority would expel him from the institution. PUNISHABLE INGREDIENTS OF RAGGING: Ø Abetment to ragging. Ø Criminal conspiracy to rag. Ø Unlawful assembly and rioting while ragging. Ø Public nuisance created during ragging. Ø Violation of decency and morals through ragging. Ø Injury to body, causing hurt or grievous hurt . Ø Wrongful restraint. Ø Wrongful confinement Ø Use of criminal force. Ø Assault as well as sexual offences or even unnatural offences. Ø Extortion. Ø Criminal trespass. Ø Offences against property. Ø Criminal intimidation. Ø Attempts to commit any or all of the above mentioned offences against the victims. Ø Physical or psychological humiliation. Ø All other offences flowing from the definition of “Ragging”. · Withholding results. · Debarring form representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet, tournament, youth festival etc.

Calender 2020-21 35 · Suspension/expulsion from the hostel. · Cancellation of admission. · Rustication from the institution for period ranging from 1 to 4 semesters. · Expulsion from the instituin and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution for a specific period. · Fine ranging between Rs 25,000/- & 1 lakh. · Collective punishment when the persons committing or abetting the crime of ragging are not identified, the institution shall resort to collective punishment. REFRESHMENTS: We are having a good canteen inside our campus. Apart from this canteen we are also having coffee shops & Food court inside the campus where all the popular food items are available for our students. TRANSPORT FACILITIES: College provides Transport facility for the students. City public transport facilities are also available to and from the college. STORE: We are having a store for the students. Here all books, education materials and other stationaries are available. HEALTH CARE FACILITES: Modern health care facilities are made available in the college as well as in the hostels. The NIMS Super Speciality Hospital situated in the same campus takes care of all their health needs. Students will be able to make use of the Health Club including Gymnasium, Meditation center, Yoga center. The most remarkable aspect is that students do not have to move out of the campus to enjoy these facilities, as they will be made available in-house. GOOD BEHAVIOUR: a. Good behaviour is an expression of fine character. b. Be neat and modest in your dress and manners. c. Be polite, oblinging and helpful. Be careful not to hurt anyone with your words or actions.

Calender 2020-21 36 A WORD TO THE PARENTS/ GUARDIANS:

In educating a student, the parents/guardians and teachers have to co-operate with and compliment each other. Here are a few helpful suggestions: Parents should attend the Parents Meeting regularly. You will be able to meet Lecturers during those days and discuss your ward’s progress with them. Parents are free to visit co-ordinator during college working hours and dicuss about their wards. Please remember that a disciplined ward at home will be a disciplined ward at college. Take interest in their tests, assignments, and their daily work and also in their extra curricular activities. If you have genuine complaints please do not hesitate to contact the teachers directly or bring the matter to the notice of the college authorities.

INSTRUCTION FOR THE STUDENTS

Ø Students should enter the class room at 7.45 am and class will be till 2 pm. They should leave the college immediately after the classes. Ø Students should maintain strict discipline insidethe campus. Ø All the students are supposed to wear their identity card inside the college campus. Ø All the students must wear their apron compulsorily. Ø All the girls are strictly asked to put up their hair inside the college. Ø Boys & Girls should wear only formal dresses inside the campus. Ø Mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the college. Ø Unauthorized absence will not be allowed. Ø Parents / guardian should inform about absence of their ward and get permission from the authorities. Ø Before leaving their hostels to home parents or guardian should get permission from the coordinator. Wardens are instructed to verify gate pass. Calender 2020-21 37 Ø For students (hostellers and day scholars) driving the vehicle inside the campus is strictly prohibited. Ø For the hostellers, using staff’s vehicles inside the campus is not permitted. Ø Day scholars for entering in hostel premises should get permission from the authorities. RULES FOR THE HOUSE SURGEONS · House Surgeons timing is from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm (Monday to Friday) Saturday timing is 8.00 am to 1.00 pm. · House surgeons are instructed to sign in the attendance register at correct time: Morning: before 8.00 am Afternoon: after 2.00 pm · All the House surgeons are instructed to complete all the work quota and assignments at the stipulated time. Then only they are eligible for stipend. · House surgeons are eligible to take one casual leave per month. They should submit leave letter to Co-ordinator office after getting HODs Signature. · It is instructed that all the house surgeons should take break only at their instructed time. The teaching staff should be very strict in these matters. · In case emergencies interns should contact the Co-ordinator who will take necessary action. · Any college functions, college tours, convocations etc. should be conducted only under supervision of Authorities and the payments should be done in the college office only not through the interns. · Anybody who violates these rules will be sternly dealt and will take necessary actions.
