  • WHY COMPETITION in the POLITICS INDUSTRY IS FAILING AMERICA a Strategy for Reinvigorating Our Democracy
SEPTEMBER 2017 WHY COMPETITION IN THE POLITICS INDUSTRY IS FAILING AMERICA A strategy for reinvigorating our democracy Katherine M. Gehl and Michael E. Porter ABOUT THE AUTHORS Katherine M. Gehl, a business leader and former CEO with experience in government, began, in the last decade, to participate actively in politics—first in traditional partisan politics. As she deepened her understanding of how politics actually worked—and didn’t work—for the public interest, she realized that even the best candidates and elected officials were severely limited by a dysfunctional system, and that the political system was the single greatest challenge facing our country. She turned her focus to political system reform and innovation and has made this her mission. Michael E. Porter, an expert on competition and strategy in industries and nations, encountered politics in trying to advise governments and advocate sensible and proven reforms. As co-chair of the multiyear, non-partisan U.S. Competitiveness Project at Harvard Business School over the past five years, it became clear to him that the political system was actually the major constraint in America’s inability to restore economic prosperity and address many of the other problems our nation faces. Working with Katherine to understand the root causes of the failure of political competition, and what to do about it, has become an obsession. DISCLOSURE This work was funded by Harvard Business School, including the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness and the Division of Research and Faculty Development. No external funding was received. Katherine and Michael are both involved in supporting the work they advocate in this report.

The Dimensions of Secession in California By Jared Thomas Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Graduation Magna Cum Laude and for Graduation with Honors from the Department of Political Silence University of Louisville March 23 ,2020 Abstract The purpose of this research paper was to determine whether annual income is an indicator of a respondent’s level of support for the Californian independence movement. Ultimately, the analysis here determined that there is not a statistically significant relationship between the income of the participant and their support for secession in California. However, the data analysis did yield that there is a correlation between an index of ‘Support for Secession’, ‘Interest in Secession’ and ‘Seriousness of Claim’ and income.

  • Presidential Elections As a State Destabilization Tool in the Theory and Practice of the Russian Info-Psychological Operations in the 20Th and 21St Century
VI. SELECTED ARTICLES IN ENGLISH 311 Michał Wojnowski Presidential elections as a state destabilization tool in the theory and practice of the Russian info-psychological operations in the 20th and 21st century The shaping of the contemporary model of indirect democracy has resulted with the need to develop mechanisms through which citizens could influence the membership of the Parliament, as well as other institutions representing the people. Elections are such a mechanism, as it is their function to take various state-level positions, from the local level, up to the position of the head of state, as well as to choose those who form collegial bodies, resolution-making bodies in boroughs, up to the legislative ones. The right to participate in duly organized elections belongs, to the basic human and civil rights. Elections in a democratic country are cyclic and competitive, which means that they must be organized at constant time intervals and that citizens need to have a guarantee of making a choice from independent political offers. The cyclic nature means that the government is legitimized to execute power for a limited period of time. Then they have to again undergo the verification of voters. The competition is all about providing conditions for the existence of the political opposition (based on the undisputable freedom of organizing for political parties) and the prohibition to eliminate it through the state-level means of coercion.1 Thus – the elections influence the total external and the internal state policy. Thus, the problems connected to the safeguarding of elections, understood as a political process, meaning a series of events taking place from the moment of decision on the announcement of elections to the announcement of election results, are of key significance from the perspective of national security and the security of military and political alliances, etc.2 This is confirmed by the communication of the European Commission of 12th September 2018, according to which: 1 M.

"As long as managers always ensure their feedback is unbiased, essential and civil, it’s almost certain to be effective and help an employee grow," Sahibzada wrote. The New York Times quoted Stanley Rosen, professor of political science, on the efforts of Chinese movie production companies to reach worldwide audiences with the film "The Great Wall." USA Today quoted Matthew Kahn, professor of economics and spatial sciences, on President-elect Donald Trump's economic goals related to China. UPROXX quoted Robert English, associate professor of international relations, Slavic languages and literature, and environmental studies, on the reasons Russian media may have reported on the opening of an embassy by the California secessionist group Yes California. December 21, 2016 The Korea Times published commentary by Kyung Moon Hwang, professor of history and East Asian languages and cultures, on why the current political turmoil in South Korea should not be considered a "revolution." How California Was Won: Race, Citizenship, And The Colonial Roots Of California, 1846 – 1879 Abstract The construction of California as an American state was a colonial project premised upon Indigenous removal, state-supported land dispossession, the perpetuation of unfree labor systems and legal, race- based discrimination alongside successful Anglo-American settlement. This dissertation, entitled “How the West was Won: Race, Citizenship, and the Colonial Roots of California, 1849 - 1879” argues that the incorporation of California and its diverse peoples into the U.S. depended on processes of colonization that produced and justified an adaptable acialr hierarchy that protected white privilege and supported a racially-exclusive conception of citizenship. In the first section, I trace how the California Constitution and federal and state legislation violated the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This legal system empowered Anglo-American migrants seeking territorial, political, and economic control of the region by allowing for the dispossession of Californio and Indigenous communities and legal discrimination against Californio, Indigenous, Black, and Chinese persons.

  • Yes California Responds to Primary Election Results; Accepts Invitation to Attend International Self-Determination Conference Hosted in Moscow
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: June 8, 2016 Louis J. Marinelli (619) 985-3585 Yes California responds to primary election results; accepts invitation to attend international self-determination conference hosted in Moscow (San Diego, California) – The Yes California Independence Campaign (Yes California) speaking on behalf of the California National Party (CNP) reacted to the results of the primary this afternoon. “One of the great takeaways of this election is that we with our limited resources as an all-volunteer grassroots organization got ‘California Independence’ printed on the ballot for the first time in history. As a result, tens of thousands now know that there is a California independence campaign and that’s one reason why qualifying for the ballot was so important. We’re equally excited that in the end thousands of voters said “No” to the Democratic and Republican candidates, and “Yes” to the non- partisan California Independence Leader.” Yes California also expressed some disappointment in the election. “We didn’t have the support of the political establishment, nor the ability to get our message before every voter. Equally disappointing, only one in four registered voters actually participated.” Regardless, Yes California saw some positives in the results. - Out of the 336 candidates on the ballot for every contest from President to City Council, Louis J. Marinelli of the CNP received a larger percentage of the vote than 116 other candidates did. - Out of the six non-partisan candidates on the ballot for State Assembly this year, Louis J. Marinelli of the CNP had the second-best showing, performing better than four of the others.

Commentary: California Secessionists Channel Logic of Southern Slaveholders Abstract 'Thursday night the streets were filled with excited crowds. No one talks of anything but the necessity for prompt action. It is hardly prudent for any man to express his opinion adverse to immediate secession, so heated are the public passions, so intolerant of restraint is the popular will." You would probably assume that this report came from California in the wake of the 2016 election, right? After all, Alex Padilla, the California secretary of state, has now authorized the Yes California Independence Campaign to begin collecting signatures for a state referendum on California's secession from the United States.
