ON thE NOStrA AEtAtE: A LANDmArk DOcUmENt OF thE cAthOLic chUrch’S ENgAgEmENt With OthEr RELIGIONS Batairwa K. Paulin Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan ABSTRACT 50 years ago (Dec 8, 1965), at the conclusion of Vatican II, the greatest event marking the life of the Church in the 20th Century, the Roman Catholic Church issued “Nostra Aetate.” The declaration has been a landmark for the Church’s relation and appraisal of other religions. It acknowledged the central role religions play in the history of humanity. Humanity has henceforth, been identified as the concrete platform calling for interactions and cross-fertilization among religions. Religions are to be more united in what they are best at: striving for answers to the existential riddles and sufferings of human persons. For those on the path of dialogue, the 50th anniversary of NA is an opportune occasion to acknowledge shared concerns and learn how respective efforts of religious groups pave the road to more cooperation and mutual enrichment. Introduction Nostra Aetate or the “Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions,” promulgated on October 28, 1965 is the shortest of the sixteen documents of Vatican II. Still, its significance for the development of relations of the Catholic Church with other religions has been unprecedented. As Ariel Ben Ami says, “it was the first time Prajñā Vihāra Vol. 18 No 1, January-June 2017, 1-28 © 2000 by Assumption University Press Batairwa K. Paulin 1 that a council had laid down principles in a solemn way concerning non-Christian religions and recognized in these religions positive values that could be appreciated.” 1 This was in fact to have implications for ways Catholics look and interact with followers of other living faith as well their engagement with existing religious traditions. -

McGinley Professor of Religion and Society Fordham University A cousin of my father, a big Irishman named Tom Ryan, was ordained a priest in Rome in 1938. After his ordination he studied there for some years and made a mark for himself as one proficient not only in Latin and canon law but also in Italian. Working for the Secretariat of State, which supervises the papal diplomatic corps, Tom was eventually assigned in 1943 to Istanbul to become Secretary to the Apostolic Delegate to the Catholic bishops in Greece and Turkey. Monsignor Ryan, as he was by that time, worked very well with the Italian Apostolic Delegate, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, better known in later life as Pope John XXIII. Roncalli liked Tom and wrote home to his family in Italy in 1943 that his new Irish secretary “comes from good farming stock like ourselves” and also “speaks Italian just like us.”1 1 Ryan worked for Roncalli from July 1943 to late November 1944, even teaching him some English, until Ryan was eventually transferred to Cairo and Roncalli shortly afterwards to newly liberated France, where he became the Papal Nuncio and dean of the diplomatic corps.2 Bishop Ryan, as he later became, looked back on those months in Istanbul with some nostalgia. -

FOREWORD TO BENEDICT XVI’S “GRACE AND VOCATION WITHOUT REMORSE” KURT KOCH The Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on the Relationship of the Church to Non-Christian Religions, “Nostra aetate,” the fourth article of which is dedicated to Judaism, was approved with a near-moral unanimity by the Council Fathers and promulgated by Bl. Pope Paul VI on November 28, 1965. The Council peritus Joseph Ratzinger judged that, above all, the fourth article opened “a new page in the book of reciprocal relations” between the Church and Israel.1 On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of Nostra aetate, the Vatican Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews published a new document entitled “The Gifts and the Calling of God Are Irrevocable” (Rom 11:29). This document was presented to the public with the aim of being “a starting point for further theological thought with a view to enriching and intensifying the theological dimen- sion of Jewish-Catholic dialogue.” Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI graciously accepted this invitation and wrote extensive “Comments on the Treatise De Iudaeis.” These comments were admittedly not intended for pub- 1. When I was allowed to visit him again last fall, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI presented these comments to me for my personal use as President of the Vatican Commission. After studying the text in detail, I came to the conclusion that the theological reflections they contained should be incorporated in future discussions between the Church and Israel. -

Introduction Newly elected Pope Francis caused a stir in the Western world with a homily he gave after a mass on the Feast of St Rita of Cascia, the patroness of impossible things.1 Reflecting on the salvific implications of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Father observed: The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good. -

In Our Time AJC AND NOSTRA AETATE: A REFLECTION AFTER 50 YEARS COVER POPE FRANCIS WITH AJC DELEGATION Pope Francis receives a 50-person AJC Leadership Delegation in a private audience at the Vatican, Feb. 13, 2014. “I am very grateful to you for the distinguished contribution you have made to dialogue and fraternity between Jews and Catholics,” Pope Francis told AJC. Foreword THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF NOSTRA AETATE IS A MOMENT FOR CELEBRATION. This revolutionary document of the Second Vatican Council marked an unprecedented turnaround in interreligious relations. In a post-Holocaust self-reflection, the Catholic Church, whose antipathy toward Jews and Judaism had contributed to hate and violence directed at Jews, rejected two millennia of anti-Jewish sentiment and promulgated a new way. Nostra Aetate teaches that Jews are not collectively responsible for the death of Jesus. Jews are not to be portrayed as accursed. Anti-Semitism is unequivocally forbidden. God’s Covenant with the Jewish people is eternal. The roots of Christianity are in Judaism. Nostra Aetate, though issued at one particular moment in history, was imbued with ongoing vitality as influential Catholics and Jews set in place a framework and structure for its implementation and refinement. Catholic- Jewish relations have reached a previously unimaginable Golden Age that could not possibly have happened without the follow-up of successive post-Nostra Aetate generations. The Catholic Church expanded upon Nostra Aetate with pronouncements, guidelines, and the establishment of departments and human resources to expand the sentiments of Nostra Aetate into a living reality. AJC, other Jewish organizations, and the Jewish people readily responded to the extended hand of the Catholic Church and created vehicles for guaranteeing the accomplishments of Nostra Aetate. -

1 The Jewish Theological Seminary May 6, 2015 Pope St. John Paul II Center Lecture: The Dream of Nostra Aetate Becomes Reality Rabbi Vistozky, Chancellor Eisen, Friends one and all: I gladly accept the title ben bayit, grateful to be considered “a regular member of the household” of The Jewish Theological Seminary. Yes, I’ve been coming here for nearly 15 years for meetings of the National Jewish-Catholic Dialogue, and have especially felt at home here in my half-dozen happy years as archbishop. As grateful as I am to be “a member of the household” here at The Jewish Theological Seminary, I am a bit apprehensive acknowledging it, since now I’ll probably get a pledge card to contribute to your annual appeal! To deliver the John Paul II Center Lecture here, sponsored by the Milstein Center for Interreligious Dialogue of The Jewish Theological Seminary, is a very high honor. It is good to be with you. Thank you! 2 Our gathering is particularly providential as we celebrate the golden jubilee of the inspired document of the Second Vatican Council, Nostra Aetate, a teaching that dramatically transformed Jewish-Catholic relations. We Catholics sometimes quip that our Jewish neighbors pay more attention to Vatican statements than we do! Both of us have paid attention to Nostra Aetate, thank God, and friendship between us has never been stronger. The Pontiff for over 50 percent of the half-century since that inspired document was Pope —now saint —John Paul II, for whom the worldwide Jewish community has a deep reverence. Four months after his death in 2005, I travelled with four other bishops and about a half-dozen rabbis on a very moving trip to Poland and Rome. -

Blanchard, B.A., MSt. A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2018 ABSTRACT EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FORERUNNERS OF VATICAN II: EARLY MODERN CATHOLIC REFORM AND THE SYNOD OF PISTOIA Shaun L. Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II.
