Dvorak Book Inside LIFE AND WORKS Antonín Dvorˇák Written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann with Sean Barrett as Dvorˇák 8.558101–04 Life and Works: Antonín Dvorˇák Preface If music is ‘about’ anything, it’s about life. No other medium can so quickly or more comprehensively lay bare the very soul of those who make or compose it. Biographies confined to the limitations of text are therefore at a serious disadvantage when it comes to the lives of composers. Only by combining verbal language with the music itself can one hope to achieve a fully rounded portrait. In the present series, the words of composers and their contemporaries are brought to life by distinguished actors in a narrative liberally spiced with musical illustrations. Unlike the standard audio portrait, the music is not used here simply for purposes of illustration within a basically narrative context. Thus we often hear very substantial chunks, and in several cases whole movements, which may be felt by some to ‘interrupt’ the story; but as its title implies the series is not just about the lives of the great composers, it is also an exploration of their works. Dismemberment of these for ‘theatrical’ effect would thus be almost sacrilegious! Likewise, the booklet is more than a complementary appendage and may be read independently, with no loss of interest or connection. A PEDAGOGICAL ANALYSIS OF DVOŘÁK’S POETIC TONE PICTURES, OP. 85 by Nathan MacAvoy Bachelor of Music Education Bob Jones University, 2014 Master of Piano Performance University of South Carolina, 2016 Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Pedagogy School of Music University of South Carolina 2020 Accepted by: Sara Ernst, Major Professor Scott Price, Committee Member Charles Fugo, Committee Member Daniel Jenkins, Committee Member Cheryl L. Addy, Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School © Copyright by Nathan MacAvoy, 2020 All Rights Reserved. ii DEDICATION This treatise is dedicated to my wife Martha. She consistently challenges me to do my best, innovate, and plan. Her support throughout my graduate degrees has been invaluable. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank the members of my committee for their investment in my education as a scholar, teacher, and musician. Dr. Jenkins’ classes challenged me not only to excel in music theory but also to use that knowledge for the benefit of others. Dr. Price served as my degree advisor and helped me improve my writing for many proposals. Weekly lessons with Dr. Fugo are already missed, but how I listen to, practice, and perform music has been transformed. I did not enjoy research until Dr. Ernst’s advanced research class. It prepared me to both finish and enjoy writing this treatise. I could not have begun this program without my previous instructors and mentors. Dr. Moore and Dr. Boerckel taught me throughout high school and my undergraduate degree. Their consistent investment prompted me to continue with a musical career.

This rustic melody is supported by a static left hand playing an open fifth (C–G). The effect is known as a drone and is reminiscent of old folk instruments. 1 82890-5 First Book Dvorak jb.indd 1 8/22/18 12:09 PM Kyrie from Mass Op. 86 The Kyrie is the traditional first movement of the Mass.

Preface ISS GoLDMARK's book is, in my opinion, a Mvery original piece of historical writing. The first part portrays old Austria, particularly old Vienna, the leading men of the Vienna Revo lution of 1848, and the principal events of that fateful year. The author achieves this by con necting the biography of her father, one of the most prominent men of the Vienna Revolution, with a very careful description of the social, po litical, and cultural features of old Austria and the life of her people. For this purpose the au thor makes full use of the original sources of the history of the Revolution which she has studied in the libraries and archives of Vienna. More over, she combines with it very interesting source material from the letters and papers of her own father and her family.
