This period establishes the new aims and hence the new techniques as having “classic” validity, and is accompanied with a prestige that holds over into subsequent periods. Dewey’s notion that “new procedures” create “certain modifications of the old tradition” is strongly reminiscent of T.S. Eliot’s argument in “Tradition and the Individual Talent” that “existing monuments” form an ideal order among themselves, which is modified by the introduction of the new (the really new) work of art among them. The existing order is complete before the new work arrives; for order to persist after the supervention of novelty, the whole existing order must be, if ever so slightly, altered; and so the relations, proportions, values of each work of art toward the whole are readjusted; and this is conformity between the old and the new. -

Complexity in the Comic and Graphic Novel Medium: Inquiry Through Bestselling Batman Stories PAUL A. CRUTCHER DAPTATIONS OF GRAPHIC NOVELS AND COMICS FOR MAJOR MOTION pictures, TV programs, and video games in just the last five Ayears are certainly compelling, and include the X-Men, Wol- verine, Hulk, Punisher, Iron Man, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Watchmen, 300, 30 Days of Night, Wanted, The Surrogates, Kick-Ass, The Losers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and more. Nevertheless, how many of the people consuming those products would visit a comic book shop, understand comics and graphic novels as sophisticated, see them as valid and significant for serious criticism and scholarship, or prefer or appreciate the medium over these film, TV, and game adaptations? Similarly, in what ways is the medium complex according to its ad- vocates, and in what ways do we see that complexity in Batman graphic novels? Recent and seminal work done to validate the comics and graphic novel medium includes Rocco Versaci’s This Book Contains Graphic Language, Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, and Douglas Wolk’s Reading Comics. Arguments from these and other scholars and writers suggest that significant graphic novels about the Batman, one of the most popular and iconic characters ever produced—including Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley’s Dark Knight Returns, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum, and Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Killing Joke—can provide unique complexity not found in prose-based novels and traditional films. Reading short stories that range from excerpts from the eighteenth-century Gothic novels to mid-century weird fiction to contemporary splatterpunk stories, students will also draw upon a wide range of literary and cultural studies theories that analyze and interpret Gothic and horror texts. By the end of this course, students should have a good grasp of the Gothic and Horror field, of its principal theoretical concepts, and be able to apply those concepts to texts more generally. Trigger Warning: This course examines graphic and potentially disturbing material. If you are triggered by anything you experience during this course and require assistance, please see me. Texts: All readings are available through the library or on ARES. Please note: where excerpts are indicated, students are also encouraged to read the entire text. Rosalie Parker (North Yorkshire: Tartarus, 2003) & Wormwood: Literature of the Fantastic, Supernatural & Decadent, 16, 20032006 Dara Downey the horror genre is extremely limber, extremely adaptable, extremely useful; the author or filmmaker can use it as a crowbar to lever open locked doors or a small, slim pick to tease the tumblers into giving. The genre can thus be used to open almost any lock on the fears which lie behind the door […]. (Stephen King, Danse Macabre (1982), 163) When King is at his best, he can be remarkably adept at cutting to the core of the genre of which he is the selfproclaimed “King”. Nevertheless, however astute such isolated observations as the above comment might be, it is always possible to find another, equally astute observation, that both contradicts what he is saying and undermines whatever favourable impression of his analytical skills we may have. Elsewhere in Danse Macabre, for example, King states confidently that Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw, with its elegant drawingroom prose and its tightly woven psychological logic, has had very little influence on the American masscult” of mainstream horror (Danse Macabre, 66). What this suggests is that the flexibility which he sees as the defining characteristic of horror has (for him at any rate) a breaking point, a suggestion well in line with his nearhysterical insistence that aesthetic values and intellectual rigour are antithetical to the aims and effects of the genre. It is precisely this sort of inverted snobbery that Tartarus Press are striving to overthrow. -

Of Monsters and Men: Absent Mothers and Unnatural Children in the Gothic ‘Family Romance’ Donna Mitchell Introduction This article explores how the conventional parent-child relationship is challenged and subsequently subverted in both traditional and modern Gothic literature. Traversing the texts of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), Shelley Jackson’s Patchwork Girl (1995), Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper (1892), and Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles (1976), it traces the genre’s formation of absent mothers and unnatural children and their position within the Gothic family unit. Specifically, it analyses how these texts illustrate feminist concerns regarding the objectification of women and gender inequality within the domestic sphere, and in particular, how they present juxtaposing issues associated with motherhood, such as the effects of postnatal trauma and the challenges associated with the woman’s inability to fulfil her maternal potential. The repercussions of replacing the natural mother and child with monstrous creations are considered through existing scholarship on the Gothic as well as various aspects of psychoanalysis and feminist theory. These approaches are applied to the four texts, which vary in their historical and socio-cultural contexts, but collectively they demonstrate the various struggles that are encompassed within the woman’s familial role.
