2013 TPA-TDC High Performance Coaching Workshop Thursday, April 11th – Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club Clay Court Training with Larry Jurovich & Oded Jacob 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM Tennis BC (TBC) and The Tennis Professionals Association (TPA) are proud to present a 2013 TPA-TDC coaching workshop that will focus on Clay Court Training. It will count as a full recertification opportunity and will be delivered by Oded Jacob and Larry Jurovich. Oded is currently the head of Tennis Canada’s National Junior Training Program in Vancouver, which opened in 2011 and is already seeing positive results in the midst of its second full year. He is recognized as one of the most influential and well-regarded tennis leaders in Israel having worked with top Israeli players such as Shahar Peer, Dudi Sela and Grand Slam champions Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich. He is also a former Olympic coach for his home country and captained Israel’s Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams while acting as the director of the Israeli National Tennis Centre. A coaching development consultant for Tennis Canada, Larry is the leader of the Coach 3 Certification Course and has led several TPA workshops throughout the country. He is an integral part of the Tennis Development Centre program and travels to a number of Canada’s TDCs to work with coaches and players. But that is only if they can move on from events in Belgrade, Serbia, last month, when the ebbs and flows of the Davis Cup final between Serbia and France reduced these big hitters to tears on consecutive days. Llodra made Zimonjic cry first, teaming with Arnaud Clément to beat Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki in a five-set epic and give France a 2-1 lead that Zimonjic feared would be decisive. But when the final ended, Llodra was the one sobbing in his chair with the captain Guy Forget and his teammates gathered around him after he had been overwhelmed by Troicki in the last singles match. “I was definitely sorry for him,” Zimonjic said in Melbourne, where the Open begins Monday.

For the three Israeli athletes — recent Australian Open doubles champions Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, and top 20-ranked Shahar Peer — fulfilling their naturally appointed role as Israeli world ambassadors is all pleasure and never a burden. It has become the norm that wherever the ATP or WTA tours might be on a given week, the Israeli players will receive enthusiastic support from the local Jewish community. On the eve of this week’s Sony Ericsson Open, which got under way Wednesday, the three prominent Israelis gathered to take part in a special ceremony to honor their achievements at Beth David Congregation, a conservative temple located in the heart of Miami. Erlich and Ram became the first Israelis to win a Grand Slam doubles title with their success Down Under, although it should be mentioned that Ram had previously reeled in two mixed-doubles trophies at majors. As for Peer, she recently made history by becoming the first Israeli player to compete in an Arab country when she played the Doha, Qatar, tournament in February, reaching the quarterfinals. “Especially in the U.S., most of the Jewish community comes out and says hello and welcomes us,” said Erlich, waiting in the lobby of Beth David for the evening festivities to begin.

Stan Wawrinka (3 singles) and Leander Paes (6 doubles) have won more Chennai titles than any other players in history. Wawrinka returns as the No. 1 seed in singles, while Paes and Marcel Granollers are the No. 2 seeds in doubles. Among the players challenging Wawrinka this week are Kevin Anderson and Benoit Paire. The second-seeded Anderson broke into the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Rankings on Oct. 12 after reaching the US Open quarter-finals. Paire, too, enjoyed a successful US Open campaign. He advanced to the fourth round in New York City and arrives in Chennai at a career-high No. 19. Paire and Wawrinka, the 2013 Chennai doubles champions, are playing with different partners in 2016: Paire with Austin Krajicek and Wawrinka with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Mahesh Bhupathi, a five-time champion with Paes, is teaming with first-time partner Gilles Muller.
