Foreword Celebrating 150 years of the Cadets The Cadet Forces have, not unnaturally, come a long way from their 1860s origins. They have evolved into unique voluntary youth organisations, offering young people opportunities to develop themselves, to try new adventures and activities, and to learn key lessons in citizenship and the importance of society. But their links to the Armed Forces are as strong as ever. In many areas of the country they are the only face of the Services in the community. They take pride in the values and ethos of the Armed Forces and the lessons of good citizenship and responsibilities these bring. Their essential links with the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Associations, which help administer and support them, are equally strong. None of this would be possible without the Adult Volunteers, whose commitment, leadership and example underpin the development and success of the Cadet Movement. Their reward Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, is to see the cadets change for the better as they are given a Chief of the Defence Staff head-start in life, and as they develop links with the community in which they live. -

Mar 18, 2010 10:49 GMT Department for Transport: New Assistant Chief of the Air Staff appointed to the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority The Secretary of State for Transport has today appointed Air Vice-Marshal Barry North OBE MA RAF to the Board of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), on the nomination of the Secretary of State for Defence. He replaces AVM Tim Anderson, whom he succeeded as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff on 1 March 2010. The CAA is responsible for the regulation of civil aviation in the United Kingdom and is the Government’s principal advisor on civil aviation matters. It has specific responsibility for airspace policy, aviation safety, consumer protection and the economic regulation of the industry. AVM North will act as a non-executive member of the Authority, with particular responsibility for national security matters. His role at the CAA is unsalaried. NOTES FOR EDITORS 1. Air Vice-Marshal North joined the RAF in 1982 and trained as a transport helicopter pilot. He flew Wessex, Pumas and Chinooks and saw service in Northern Ireland and the Falkland Islands. He became Senior RAF Officer Northern Ireland in 2003 and after promotion to Air Commodore in 2006 took command of all UK air operations within the Gulf region and Afghanistan. After a period overseeing RAF planning activity he was promoted to Air Vice- Marshal in 2009, becoming Air Officer Commanding 22 Group and Chief of Staff Training at HQ Air Command. 2. As Assistant Chief of the Air Staff, AVM North is a member of the Air Force Board and Head of the Service’s Operations Support Branch. -

QUEEN VICTORIA SCHOOL DUNBLANE FK15 0JY seeks to appoint a Principal Teacher of English Ref: 95600 Required August 2021 Queen Victoria School (QVS) is a co-educational Boarding School funded by the Ministry of Defence to provide stable and uninterrupted education and boarding to some 270 children of Service personnel, from ages 10/11 to 18. The School is set in 45 acres of beautiful Perthshire countryside. The English Department consists of one Principal Teacher and two full-time Teachers. The successful candidate will play a key role in meeting departmental and whole-school targets. They should be willing to lead by example, supporting and empowering both staff and students. Applications are invited from well-qualified graduates with proven leadership experience relevant to the post. They should have excellent communication, planning and time-management skills as well as a comprehensive knowledge of the curriculum. All applicants must be suitably qualified to teach S1 – S6 students at all CfE levels. Applicants must be registered with GTC Scotland and Disclosure Scotland Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG), prior to taking up post. Salary is based on SNCT Pay Agreements. In addition, a QVS Boarding School Allowance is payable to reflect the requirement to undertake additional boarding duties. Currently, this allowance is £7,752. Please be advised that the Department is conducting a review of all pay related allowances which could impact on those allowances that the post currently being advertised attracts. A commitment to boarding school life, including taking part in extra-curricular activities, is essential. Previous experience in sports coaching, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme or the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) would be desirable. -

Staff take great pride in their work here and relish the opportunity of being fully involved in both the academic and pastoral life of our wonderful school. We have a very healthy teacher-pupil ratio and classes are typically much smaller than those in the state system. Although we have a long school day (from 08:50 until 16:25), students benefit from studying a wide range of academic subjects and Piping, Drumming, Dancing, Drill and Games. Older students also must join our CCF for at least 2 years. We hold to our strong ceremonial traditions and our strong links with the military community and have regular parades throughout the year, culminating in Grand Day, our final day of the summer term, which is a wonderful spectacle to be involved in. Queen Victoria School: School Profile Founded in 1908, Queen Victoria School in Dunblane is fully-funded for tuition and boarding by the Ministry of Defence to provide stability and continuity of education, within the Scottish system, for the children of UK Armed Forces personnel. Service personnel who are Scottish, or who have served in Scotland, or who have been part of a Scottish regiment are given priority. Fully boarding, co-educational and tri-service (for Army, Navy and RAF children), the School takes around 270 pupils from the ages of 10/11 up to 18. -

Letter from Queen Victoria School
Dear Alex I am writing to thank the Highland Society of London for their continued support and the cheque for £100.00 which was presented at prize giving on the 30th June 2017. Kirsten Hughes received the Highland Dancing award this year due to her outstanding commitment to the dancing team and department since joining Queen Victoria School 7 years ago. Kirsten was already a successful competitive dancer on her arrival, however, it was during her time here that she progressed through the sections and went on to take medal line-up places at Premier level. Along with her competitive achievements, Kirsten was a pro-active dance team member. Since her second year at Queen Victoria school she has been attending evening classes twice weekly, focusing on choreography dances and preparing for any external events. She has represented the school dance team at numerous events such as The Edinburgh Tattoo, The CCF Beating Retreat at Holyrood Palace and Stirling Armed Forces Day, to name but a few. In her final two years of school she volunteered her time twice weekly, to help assist my junior classes. Kirsten was a fantastic leader in the junior classes and she took on a teaching role as and when required, often spending one-to-one time with pupils that required extra support. Kirsten has hopes to one day become a Highland Dancing teacher and have a dance school of her own and, with the knowledge and skills gained throughout her time with us, I have no doubt that she will go on to succeed this.
