  • Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant
Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant January 28, 2021 In new: A statue of freedom fighter Govind Ballabh Pant was unveiled at its new location on a roundabout at the Pandit Pant Marg A brief note on the issue According to a senior HUA Ministry official, all statues in the Parliament premises would be shifted over the course of the project. Work on the new Parliament, which is adjacent to the existing building built by the British in the 1920s, started this month and is scheduled to be completed by the time India celebrates 75 years of Independence in 2022. The statue of Pandit Pant was removed by the Central Public Works Department as part of the project to construct a new Parliament building The Statue of Pandit Pant was installed in New Delhi in 1966 by the then President of India Dr S Radhakrishnan. The Govind Ballabh Pant Memorial Society was formed to organise memorial functions across the country. Over the years it has been headed by past Presidents and Prime Ministers. Currently, the daughter- in-law of Pandit Pant and former MP, Ila Pant, is the chairperson of the society. He was born on 10 September 1887, at Almora in Uttarakhand His mother’s name was Govindi. His father, Manorath Pant, was constantly on the road. Regionalization and Institutionalization: Dimensions of Multi-level Party System Change in India Inaugural-Dissertation zur Erlangung der Doktorwürde der Fakultät für Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg vorgelegt von Malte Pehl, M.A. Geboren in Stade Erstgutachter: Prof. Subrata K. Mitra, Ph.D. (Rochester, U.S.A.) Zweitgutachter: Prof. Dr. Aurel Croissant Heidelberg, 2010 © Malte Pehl DEDICATIO This work is dedicated to my parents, Klaus-Dieter and Elisabeth Pehl without whose encouragement, support and love it would have never been started. And it is dedicated to my wife Aruni whose belief, devotion and love saw it through to its completion. 2 ACKOWLEDGEMETS First of all, I would like to thank to my advisor, Professor Subrata Mitra whose scholarship first sparked my interest in pursuing a doctorate and in Indian politics. His support, example and his intellectual guidance have since then helped me to better understand politics and to hopefully become a better scholar in the process. Each of these qualities is only surpassed by his friendship and loyalty as a mentor for which I am equally grateful. I would also like to thank my second reader, Professor Aurel Croissant whose teaching and work on comparative and Asian politics I benefitted from tremendously since I first arrived in Heidelberg and whose writings have since then continuously motivated me to become a better writer myself. A debt of gratitude is also owed to Professors Russell Dalton and Bernard Grofman who were kind enough to offer me the hospitality of the Center for the Study of Democracy at the University of California, Irvine and a chance to engage in inspiring conversations on elections, parties and party systems and to teach comparative politics during two stays there in the course of my doctoral studies.

  • Shri K.C. Pant
1 Shri. K. C. Pant – an eulogy Anil K. Rajvanshi [email protected] On 15 November 2012 I lost a very dear friend of mine Shri. K. C. Pant - the former Defence Minister of India. He was 81 years of age and is survived by two sons and his charming wife Mrs. Ila Pant who was a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) M.P. Just two days ago on Diwali day (13 November) I had spoken to him on phone for almost ½ hour to wish him and to enquire about his health. We discussed the farmers’ agitation in Maharashtra and other matters, and he asked me about when I was coming to Delhi. I used to speak quite often with him on the phone and hence it came as a shock to hear about his sudden demise just two days after talking to him. Our age difference was about 20 years and yet he was a very dear friend of mine. Talking with him, meeting him at his house in Delhi and spending countless hours with him and Mrs. Pant was invigorating. He was a living history and I feel blessed to have known him and to have heard from him about the players who shaped modern India – starting from his father Shri. Govind Ballabh Pant to Prime Ministers Smt. Indira Gandhi, Shri. Rajiv Gandhi and Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee under all of whom he served with distinction as cabinet minister in various major ministries including home, defence, finance, energy etc. I first met Shri. Pant or Pantji (as he was called) in 1983.

  • Kleine Parteien Und Koalitionspolitik in Der Indischen Union Seit 1998
ASIEN 97 (Oktober 2005), S. 51-71 Das regionale Gesicht der Nation: Kleine Parteien und Koalitionspolitik in der Indischen Union seit 1998 Malte Pehl1 Summary The Indian political system has seen a regionalization of party representation with a concomitant increase in the attention given to and use of regional discourse and issues – even in national elections and national politics. In the past, smaller regional parties acquired the role of both kingmaker and 'king slayer' on some notable occa- sions. However, while the increasing visibility of regional political forces and the growing number of politicians in the national parliament who belong to regional par- ties are undeniable facts, this article finds surprisingly little evidence that regional parties are systematically getting more than their proportional share of offices and influence over Union politics. The prominence that regional parties received in the wake of the United Front governments in the second half of the 1990s, when region- ally based coalitions ruled at the centre at the pleasure of the Congress Party, has somewhat overstated their impending dominance as the key to power in New Delhi. On the contrary, in the matter of sharing out much sought-after ministerial posts in the national government, the largest parliamentary parties have been able to outper- form their smaller parties in all three Lok Sabha periods since 1998.
