12 - RUTGERS ATHLETICS RUTGERS NATION In Jersey, we’re just louder! Student and fan experience at Rutgers has a Garden State flare that no other state can ever match. Rutgers Nation packed the RAC for a record 10 sellouts for men’s basketball in the 2019-20 season, showing that strength in numbers helps fuel the Scarlet Knights success in competition. From the R-U chant to the Knight Pulse, the crowd keeps the Scarlet Knights ignited for battle from tip-off to the final buzzer.

WHY SCARLET? The color scarlet was first proposed in the campus newspaper, The Targum, in May 1869. It was adopted shortly thereafter. This color was chosen because of its striking appearance and a good scarlet ribbon could be easily obtained.

WHY KNIGHTS? Since its days when the school was Queen’s College, the athletic teams were referred to as the Queensmen. Officially serving as the mascot beginning in 1925 was the “Chanticleer,” a fighting rooster. In the early 1950’s, a campus- wide selection process changed the mascot to that of a Knight. By 1955, the Scarlet Knight had become the new Rutgers mascot.

LDSP

OFFICE OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS LDSP seeks to develop student-athletes for success in athletics, academics and life after sport. This is accomplished through a variety of programs as well as a series of credit-based courses. The foundation is built in the freshman year through our Identity Development of the Student-Athlete course. Through this course, our students acquire the tools that will allow them to be successful throughout their time “On the Banks”.

Over their entire career, student-athletes participate in community service, personal enrichment, leadership development, career development, career mentoring and alumni engagement opportunities that allow them to develop skills and make connections they will need to succeed beyond their time at Rutgers. Our ultimate goal is for each student-athlete to leave campus with a post-graduate opportunity that aligns with their goals whether that be employment or graduate school.

MISSION The Office of Leadership Development and Strategic Partnerships (LDSP) provides a programmatic and curricular vehicle that supports the holistic development of Rutgers Athletics varsity student- athletes, coaches and staff.
