Dogs Through the Decades UMBC celebrates 40 years

BRIAN WHIPPO Retriever Weekly Editorial Staff

The UMBC Commons was fi lled with the din of anticipation as thousands of students, staff, faculty, alumni, and other special guests fi lled the building in honor of our school’s 40th birthday celebration. Black, yellow, and silver balloons lined the area outside the bookstore where a crowd formed around a table of dogs. The dogs were cakes, artfully crafted by UMBC Class of ‘97 alum Duff Goldman, owner of Charm City Cakes and star of his own television show, Ace of Cakes, on the Food Network. Each of the fi ve cakes was an edible recreation of Tru Grit, UMBC’s Chesapeake Bay Retriever mascot, decorated with symbols of the fi ve decades during which UMBC has existed. This weekend, Martin Scorcese’s new crime drama The Departed will debut in theatres around the country. The film, set in Boston, focuses on two men from opposite sides of the law going undercover. The Departed’s all- star cast includes Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. The movie was originally a huge hit in Hong Kong titled Internal Affairs. The Retriever Weekly was given the opportunity to participate in a teleconference with Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio. The plot, in a nutshell, is based around secret identities. Young cop Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) has gone undercover inside the Irish mob run by Frank Costello (Nicholson). Meanwhile, Colin Sullivan (Damon) is a criminal working as a mole inside the police department. Both men become engrossed by their respective double lives as they gather information. However, it soon becomes obvious to both the police department and the mob that they each have a spy working from within their organization. Costigan and Sullivan are thrown into a race to discover the identity of their counterpart in order to avoid self-destruction. THE RETRIEVER WEEKLY September 26, 2006 Arts & Entertainment 19 Gridiron Gang is one big violent Hallmark card

SCOTT MEIXEL Retriever Weekly Contributing Writer

Every year we seem to be subjected to a new sports drama where we learn that all of the problems that today’s youth face can be solved by football. Sometimes there are small variations, such as in The Mighty Ducks where they played hockey, but usually every movie in this genre is one of those feel-goodish, cliche-ridden films about triumphing over adversity, if you’ll excuse that cliche. Sean Porter (The Rock) and Malcolm Moore (Xzibit) are juvenile detention center counselors who, upon learning of the death of one of their former inmates, decide to start a football team. The idea being that we have tried everything else, we should try to teach discipline and teamwork through sports. The team joins in with a Christian school league to try and compete for the championship. As expected, this movie is one big Hallmark card. That being said, it is one gritty and violent Hallmark card. There are plenty of pseudo- inspirational speeches throughout, but to get to them you first have to go through two drive- bys, a kid getting run over by a car, and another shooting. All of this takes place within the first 20 minutes of the film, right after the first speech by Porter in which he tells an inmate on his last night in jail that if he does not wise up, he’ll be [Couresty of Columbia Pictures] dead.
