Description:

For his ninth , Lenny Kravitz found much of his inspiration close to home. In fact, the very spirit of Black And White America came from the locations in which the music was made—from a tiny, 400-person community in the Bahamas to the streets of . And out of his experiences as a true citizen of the planet, his first new songs in three years became the most personal and diverse collection of his career. ", my environment definitely lends a lot to the creative process," he says.

The overwhelming emotion on Black And White America is the feel of optimism, faith and hope. Kravitz acknowledges that these tumultuous times make it difficult to maintain these beliefs. “This world is challenging place,” he says. “The interesting dynamic is when you are in the middle of chaos and you are able to find inner peace. I choose to remain optimistic, even in the face of negativity and destruction."

Description:

"These times," says Ry Cooder, "call for a very different kind of protest song. ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone?' We're way down the road from that."

On his fourth solo effort for Nonesuch/Perro Verde Records, the globe-trotting composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist leaves behind the fantastical yarn-spinning, the magical realism, and allegorical tunes of his acclaimed, Grammy Award-nominated trilogy-Chavez RavineMy Name Is Buddy (2005), (2007), and I, Flathead (2008), all Grammy-nominated discs-for the most forthright album of his career. The 14 songs on Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down are, by turns, angry, outraged, bitterly funny, and deeply poignant. With brilliant, Woody Guthrie-like directness and a healthy dollop of satire, Cooder's lyrics address the often-sorry state of our domestic affairs: the bank bailout, the anti-immigration movement, the ever-growing gap between rich and poor, and the never-ending war in the Middle East and its devastating physical and emotional toll on young soldiers.

While his words are excoriating, the music is as exhilarating as anything Cooder has ever recorded, incorporating folk, blues, gospel, Tin Pan Alley, and Mexican-American norteno . As a critic for 's Guardian put it while reviewing , "Cooder demonstrates how he has brought home the lessons he learned producing the in Cuba, reminding himself that the most authentic music is always just around the corner." Contemporary affairs blend with rich musical history: The deceptively cheerful arrangement of "No Banker Left Behind" is informed by the legacy of pioneer and early 20th century vaudeville star Uncle Dave Macon; "John Lee Hooker for President" channels the electric guitar sound and growling vocal inflections of the blues legend. On tracks like "John Lee Hooker..." and the quietly mournful "Baby Joined the Army," Cooder, who also produced the album, works alone in stripped-down voice-and-guitar settings. He's accompanied elsewhere by frequent collaborators such as drummer Joachim Cooder, accordionist Flaco Jimenez, and Juliette Commagere. Old friend also makes a guest appearance on drums.

Cooder has long taken the road less traveled. In an era of interactive digital content, he released a hard-bound 95-page novella with the 2008 conclusion of his California trilogy, the hotrod-fueled I, Flathead , completing, as the Independent's Andy Gill put it, "a diversely detailed portrait of outlaw spirits in a land of shrinking opportunities, where lives are built on dreamy foundations and broken by disillusion." On Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down, Cooder looks past the flow of facile news that distinguishes our disinformation age and humanizes the headlines. The Depression Era imagery he frequently employs is startlingly apt in these outspoken songs about up-to-the-minute issues. With its blunt protest numbers, its sly send-ups, and its plainspoken laments, Pull up Some Dust and Sit Down showcases the indefatigable Cooder at his most passionate and inspired.

Cooder will make a rare live appearance on August 31 and September 1, 2011 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco with special guests Mexican-American roots music combo Los Cenzontles. He also will release a book if fiction in the fall on City Lights Books. ARTIST & INFO

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Rock Producers: Neak Mentor, , Neak Menter, The Joy Formidable Radio Formats: Modern Rock Packaging Specs: Custom jacket, 2 standard black records, white paper sleeves, 4X4 insert w/pins for album download. Focus Markets: NY, LA, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, Description:

Barely over a year after playing their first ever American shows, Welsh rock trio The Joy Formidable will release their debut album, The Big Roar, March 15th on Canvasback/Atlantic.

After self-releasing their eight-track A Balloon Called Moaning EP at home last February, The Joy Formidable spent 2009 touring the U.K., Europe and Australia with bands including Editors, Temper Trap and , mastering tiny clubs and festival stages alike. Along the way, they earned critical raves from NME, , the London Times, Spin and , and praise from Garbage's and Courtney Love, among others.

When they weren't on the road, the band worked on writing and tracking the material for The Big Roar. "We recorded in a tiny corner of our London bedroom," says guitarist and lead singer Ritzy Bryan. "It was great, because you could capture that moment when you wake up in the middle of the night with a melody or an image or a lyric." Working on and off for a year, the trio -- Bryan, bassist Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matthew Thomas -- crafted a remarkable collection of modern rock songs that explore what Bryan describes as "the possibility of victory in a hopeless situation." Adds Dafydd: "The album covers a lot of emotional range. It's captured the battle between the eternal optimist and the manic depressive."

The band produced The Big Roar themselves, with help from engineer Neak Menter. They traveled to Los Angeles in summer of 2010 to mix it with Rich Costey (Muse, , ) who also produced new recordings of fan favorites "Whirring and Austere. The album's first single, "I Don't Want To See You Like This," is out now. The Village Voice called the song "one of the band's best offerings yet, a breakup song that looks forward to the other side of heartache, with racing and thundering drums that seem engineered to snap both parts of the still-attached couple out of their sad state." These songs are joined on the The Big Roar nine other beautiful, explosive new recordings.

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: London, UK Band Members: Ritzy Bryan (vocals /guitar,) Rhydian Dafydd (Bass), Matthew Thomas (drummer) There's something panoramic about The Joy Formidable's music - their mountainous, fuzzed out riffs and ferocious, earthy rhythms shrouded in ethereal haze. It sounds like where they're from: Childhood friends Ritzy Bryan (vocals, guitar) and Rhydian Dafydd (bass, vocals) grew up in rural North Wales, surrounded by rolling green hills and little else. "There's a beauty and a loneliness to the landscape there," says Dafydd. "We had no neighbors growing up," Bryan notes. "I think my parents looked for a with no neighbors so they could play their music as loud as possible."

For her part, Bryan loved the isolation. Growing up as an only child, the singer immersed herself in her parents' enormous record collection and the classical guitar studies she took on at the age of seven. "I loved playing guitar by myself, back then I was quite introverted with my music," she says.

Bryan and Dafydd had been writing music separately from one another, and worked together in a couple of short-lived local bands after finishing school. They knew they wanted to collaborate, but didn't manage to make it work until a few years ago. "We kept missing each other," Ritzy says. Bryan went off to Washington, D.C "on a whim" and returned to Wales in 2008 with renewed focus. "My family situation wasn't easy to go back to" says Bryan. "I came back out of necessity and found a lot of sanctuary recording with Rhydian and having this new band to concentrate on."

For six months, the pair wrote together, experimenting with different sonic approaches. "We'd go for walks in the hills between recordings," Dafydd remembers. "We'd write for hours and hours," adds Bryan, "and if we got frustrated, we'd go stomp it out, up and down the mountains." But as the sessions began yielding signature tunes like "Austere" and "Cradle" - tracks that combined the duo's interest in thick, textured noises with clear, shimmering pop hooks - they knew they'd found their sound. "We'd always been into writing strong melodies," Bryan says. "The sparks really flew when we started messing with things that were choral and symphonic, mixed with what both of us had already enjoyed separately: dirty, loud, rhythmic guitars and thick bass-lines."

For his ninth album, Lenny Kravitz found much of his inspiration close to home. In fact, the very spirit of Black And White America came from the locations in which the music was made—from a tiny, 400-person community in the Bahamas to the streets of Paris. And out of his experiences as a true citizen of the planet, his first new songs in three years became the most personal and diverse collection of his career. "No doubt, my environment definitely lends a lot to the creative process," he says.

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: New York, NY Band Members: Lenny Kravitz (Lead Vocals, Guitar), Craig Ross (Guitar), Anthony Breit (Bass), Franklin Vanderbilt (Drums), George Laks (Keyboards), Harold Todd (Saxophone). Louis Ludovic (Trumpet), Tawatha Agee (Vocals), Cindy Mizelle (Vocals), Jenny Douglas (Vocals)

Regarded as one of the preeminent rock musicians of our time, Lenny Kravitz has transcended genre, style, race and class into a 20-year musical career, one which revels in the rich influences of '60s and '70s soul, rock and funk. Kravitz’s multiple talents as a writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist have resonated through eight studio albums into a timeless catalog.

From 1999 to 2002, he won four consecutive Grammy Awards, setting a record for the most wins in the “Best Male Rock Vocal Performance” category for his single “Dig In” (previously winning for “Again,” “American Woman” and “Fly Away”). In 2004, he received his sixth Grammy nomination in the category for “If I Could Fall In Love” off his 6th studio album, Lenny. Kravitz’s appeal has also been recognized by his peers; his collaborative efforts are as varied as his own influences, having worked with Madonna, Slash, Aerosmith, Jay-Z, N.E.R.D., Mick Jagger, P. Diddy and Alicia Keys.

Having sold over 38 million albums worldwide, Kravitz’s musical success has afforded him many opportunities to fulfill his creative vision beyond the recording industry. He recently launched a creative firm, Kravitz Design, which undertakes various high-concept projects with commercial, residential and product design.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Rock Description: Children are born, but a friend dies. A new guitarist arrives as the old one leaves. And a band is reborn after an overdue break. Beginnings and endings.

That's I'm With You, truly the beginning of a new era for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The 10th album of the Los Angeles band's singular career sees the band refreshed, renewed, once again working with producer (their fifth partnership, including the last album, 2006's monster two-CD tour de force). It expands the same combination of funk and finesse, intensity and tenderness that's made the Peppers sine qua non in modern rock, but with a new set of life experiences from the intervening years that coalesced into a dynamically fresh start.

I'm With Youwas written collectively by the four members - founding singer and bassist Flea , drummer (who's been with the band since 1989) and guitarist (the new guy, though he's been a long-time friend of the band and served as second guitarist on much of the Stadium Arcadium tour). That process, coming after the band took two years off following its 2006-2007 world tour, happened in a full year of sessions starting in a Hollywood basement and continuing in the unlikely idyll of Big Sur, where they used a studio converted from a barn at Beach Boy Al Jardine's spread. Recording was done in Los Angeles and at Malibu's Shangri-La Studios. The result is the most heartfelt, playful and accomplished album in the band's career, which is really saying something from the artists that gave us "Give It Away," "" and "Californication."

ARTIST & INFO Band Members: Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, Josh Klinghoffer One of the most successful acts in rock history, Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs, and won six Grammy Awards, including "Best Rock Album" for Stadium Arcadium, "Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group" for ", "Best Rock Song" for "," and "Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal" for "Give It Away." The band holds the record for the most No. 1 singles of all time at Alternative radio, a total of 11, and a combined 81 weeks at No. 1.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Country Description: Country music devotee Cristy Barber, Vice President of Marketing and Promotions at VP Records, the world's largest reggae label, and a Grammy nominated producer for the 2003 dancehall reggae- compilation album Def , envisioned this project two years ago and teamed up on lead production with John Rich of the multi-platinum selling country duo Big & Rich and the winner of this year's Celebrity Apprentice, and the acclaimed Jamaican saxophonist and top reggae producer .

Reggae's Gone Country is taking some of Jamaican's favorite classic American country songs and putting their beats and whole instrumentation around it while still having that root of country. "It is this crazy cool idea," says John Rich. The majority of the album was recorded at Kingston's Grafton and the Marley owned Tuff Gong Studios. The tracks were mixed by Errol and Shane Brown, then sent to Nashville where they were embellished with country instrumentation by legendary pedal steel player Mike Johnson and Jonathan Yudkin on fiddle/ with John Rich overseeing the production at Fireside Studios, formerly owned by the late country legend Porter Wagoner.

Info: American country music and Jamaican reggae share many similarities. Both genres are rife with love-gone-wrong songs, romanticized gritty outlaw tales and expressions of unwavering spiritual devotion providing guidance through daily struggles, each delivered in their distinctive regional voices, the molasses thick Jamaican patois heard on many reggae tracks and country's indelible southern twang. Country has been a part of the island's musical catalog for years. "Everyone from 20-year-old kids to their grandparents listen to country in Jamaica. People are always so shocked when I say this, but the music plays such an important role in the Caribbean," states Cristy Barber.

Studio, Paris, Gaspard Augé Radio Formats: College / AAA / Dance / Mixshow Focus Markets: NY, LA, Atlanta, San Francisco, Tulsa, Honolulu, Tampa, Miami, Denver Description: Sebastian has followed such an impressive path that it's hard to believe that he's only now releasing his long-awaited debut album. But the facts are clear: after several EPs (H.A.L, Smoking Kills, Ross Ross Ross, Motor), a record compiling his many remixes for , Kelis and the Kills among others (Sebastian Remixes) and a co production of the soundtrack for the film Steak with Sebastien Tellier and Mr Oizo, in which he also played one of the leading roles. Ever elusive, he unveiled yet another side of his creativity in composing a philharmonic score for Notre Jour Viendra, Romain Gavras' first film. One of the creators, along with Justice, of the Ed Banger sound, he is without a doubt the label's most unusual figure. An iconoclast maverick he readily defies the rules to deliver a dirty and violent kind of techno that coughs and spits; music to his image: human and visceral. Super prolific and constantly effervescent this musician has managed, in the space of a few years, to redefine and is ready to astound everyone once again with Total , a definitive and meteoric first album.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Packaging Specs: Reissue with new softpak packaging Description: It was on Frisell's critically-lauded "Quartet" album of 1995 - with its cover art by Thomas Hart Benton - that his compositional style took its most palpable turn toward a personalized brand of Americana. Foregoing a rhythm section and adding horns, he fashioned an ensemble sound that ultimately owed more to the chamber music tradition than the jazz group. On his subsequent projects, beginning with the milestone "Nashville", Frisell placed his compositions in the hands of seasoned alt-country players who interpreted the roots-inflected aspect of his writing with richly-hued virtuosity. These varying collaborations - heavily seasoned with country and rock - have resulted in the best-selling albums of the guitarist's career, and several seasons of much-praised roadwork.

On this latest effort, Frisell combines personnel from both these phases of his career, and intertwines them in an outstanding set of new compositions that add yet another dimension to an aristry in its prime.

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Seattle, WA In a career spanning more than 25 years and over 150 recordings—including 25 albums of his own—guitarist, composer, and bandleader Bill Frisell has established himself as a visionary presence in American music. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists, filmmakers and legendary musicians. But it is his work as a leader that has garnered increasing attention and accolades. The New York Times described Frisell’s music this way: “It’s hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and country with jazz and blues, he’s found what connects them: improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music and also takes on another often-avoided subject, tenderness.” Frisell’s recordings over the last decades span a wide range of musical influences. His catalog, including 20 recordings for Nonesuch, has been cited by DownBeat as “the best recorded output of the decade.” It includes original Buster Keaton film scores to arrangements of music for extended ensemble with horns (This Land, Blues Dream); compositions originally written as soundtracks to Gary Larson cartoons (Quartet); interpretations of work by other classic and contemporary American composers (Have a Little Faith); and collaborations with the acclaimed rhythm section of bassist Viktor Krauss and drummer Jim Keltner (Gone, Just Like a Train; Good Dog, Happy Man). Other releases include an album with Nashville musicians (Nashville ), the solo album Ghost Town, an album of his arrangements of songs by and Burt Bacharach (), a trio album with jazz legends Dave Holland and Elvin Jones, and a collection of American traditional songs and original compositions inspired by them entitled . , nominated for a Grammy in 2004, combines Frisell’s own brand of American roots music and his unmistakable improvisational style with the influences of Brazilian, Greek, and Malian sounds. His 2004 release, Unspeakable, won a Grammy Award. His two-CD set East/West features his two working trios recorded in concert on both coasts. The Philadelphia Inquirer says, “Frisell is a revered figure among musicians—like Miles Davis and few others, his signature is built from pure sound and inflection; an anti-technique that is instantly identifiable.” Frisell’s collaborators have included such diverse artists as Gavin Bryars, Don Byron, Ron Carter, Loudon Wainwright III, Elvis Costello, Suzanne Vega, , Marianne Faithful, Robin Holcomb, Wayne Horvitz, Paul Motian, Rinde Eckert, Caetano Veloso, , David Sylvian, Bono, , Vic Chesnutt, Van Dyke Parks, Dave Holland, Elvin Jones, Laurie Anderson, Paul Simon, Vinicius Cantuaria, , Jack DeJohnette, Lee Konitz, Hal Willner, Ginger Baker, , Marc Ribot, , Kenny Wheeler, Joe Lovano, , Jan Garbarek, Gary Burton, , , Vic Chesnutt, film directors Wim Wenders, Gus Van Sant and Rory Kennedy, cartoonist Gary Larson and visual artist Jim Woodring, and many others. He is also the music director of A Century of Song for the Ruhr Triennale Arts Festival in Germany. Collaborators in this series have included Suzanne Vega, Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones, Loudon Wainwright III, and Ron Sexsmith, among others.

ARTIST & INFO Through regular performances with major orchestras, recitals in the world's music capitals, and acclaimed Nonesuch recordings, pianist Richard Goode has won a large and devoted following. The New Yorker has said, "What one remembers most from Goode's playing is not its beauty-exceptional as it is-but his way of coming to grips with the composer's central thought, so that a work tends to make sense beyond one's previous perception of it ... The spontaneous formulating process of the creator [becomes] tangible in the concert hall." And according to the New York Times, "It is virtually impossible to walk away from one of Mr. Goode's recitals without the sense of having gained some new insight, subtly or otherwise, into the works he played or about pianism itself."

In 2007-2008, Richard Goode has performed and curated a multi-event residency at the South Bank Centre in London as the year's Artist-in-Residence, and has performed recitals in such cities as Berlin, Paris, Milan, , New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Berkeley. His orchestral appearances include the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of James Levine at Tanglewood, the London Philharmonic with Kurt Masur, the Concertgebouw Orchestra with Ivan Fisher, the New York Philharmonic with Sir Colin Davis, the San Francisco Symphony with Alan Gilbert, and the Radio Philharmonique in Paris with Peter Oundjian. In addition to his "engrossing" (New York Times) eight-event Carnegie Hall Perspectives in 2005-2006, Richard Goode was invited to hold master classes at the City's three leading conservatories-Juilliard, Manhattan, and Mannes-and to give two illustrated talks on his Perspectives repertoire at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the 2006-2007 season, he was honored for his contributions to music with the first ever Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance, which culminated in a residency at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

During the 2006-2007 season, Richard Goode played recitals in the major music capitals in Europe and the , including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Edinburgh, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. His orchestral appearances last season included the Budapest Festival Orchestra under the baton of Ivan Fisher and the DSO Berlin with Herbert Blomstedt.

A native of New York, Richard Goode studied with Elvira Szigeti and Claude Frank, with Nadia Reisenberg at the Mannes College of Music, and with at the Curtis Institute. He has won many prizes, including the Young Concert Artists Award, First Prize in the Competition, the Avery Fisher Prize, and a Grammy Award. His remarkable interpretations of Beethoven came to national attention when he played all five concerti with the Baltimore Symphony under David Zinman, and when he performed the complete cycle of sonatas at New York's 92nd Street Y and Kansas City's Folly Theater.

In addition to his most recent release of Mozart solo works, Richard Goode has made more than two-dozen recordings, including Mozart concerti with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas, the complete Partitas by J.S. Bach, and solo and chamber works of Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Busoni, and George Perle. Goode is the first American-born pianist to have recorded the complete Beethoven sonatas, which were nominated for a Grammy Award and universally acclaimed. With soprano Dawn Upshaw, he has recorded Goethe Lieder of Schubert, Schumann, and Hugo Wolf for Nonesuch. The four recordings of Mozart concerti with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra were received with wide critical acclaim, including many "Best of the Year" nominations and awards and his recording of the Brahms sonatas with clarinetist won a Grammy Award. Mr. Goode's first, long-awaited Chopin recording was also chosen Best of the Month by Stereo Review and descri

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Berkeley, CA For his nearly 20 years as a major-label artist, jazz chart-topping saxophonist and composer Joshua Redman has led a wide range of adventurous combos, from the large-scale, classic repertoire-oriented SFJAZZ Collective to his funk-oriented trio, Elastic Band. In the new, collaborative quartet James Farm, the prodigious other members - pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland - share equal billing with Redman. As he has explained, "Everybody in this band is a composer and all the decisions are made collectively. The sound of the band, the direction that each performance takes, the set list; they're all determined equally by us as band members."

Though younger than Redman, his band mates boast equally impressive resumes, having played individually with such artists as Terence Blanchard, Dave Holland, Betty Carter, McCoy Tyner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Charles Lloyd, and are among the most in-demand players in jazz right now. Penman and Harland were part of the SFJAZZ Collective and both appeared on Parks' acclaimed 2007 Blue Note solo debut, Invisible Cinema, which caught the ear of Redman and in part led to the formation of this new group.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Classical Producers: Helmut Muehle Packaging Specs: Reissue with new soft packaging Description: Although already well-established with audiences and critics throughout the world, violinist Gidon Kremer has achieved a new level of global recognition with his recordings of the music of Astor Piazzolla. His remarkable affinity for the composer is brought to a striking new project that pairs the Argentinian composer's "Four Seasons" with the Vivaldi work of the same name: perhaps the best-known piece of classical music there is.

ARTIST & INFO Over the course of nearly thirty years of a distinguished career, violinist Gidon Kremer, born in Riga in 1947, has established a worldwide reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation, praised for his high degree of individualism, his rejection of the well-trodden paths of interpretation, and his search for new possibilities. Gidon Kremer has made more than one hundred recordings for a number of record labels. His most recent Nonesuch release is Happy Birthday (2003), whose release follows a disc of works by Romanian composer Georges Enescu (2002) and the Grammy Award-winning After Mozart (2001). Tracing Astor (2001) marked the third disc in a trilogy of albums celebrating the music of Astor Piazzolla, which also includes the Grammy-nominated Hommage à Piazzolla (1996) and El Tango (1997), featuring arrangements of works by Piazzolla performed by Kremer’s acclaimed Astor Quartet.

Kremer’s recordings, which have earned him a series of major international awards, have set new standards of interpretation. His repertoire is unusually extensive, encompassing all of the standard classical and Romantic violin works, as well as music by twentieth century masters. He has also championed the works of living Russian and Eastern European composers and has performed many important new compositions, of which several are dedicated to him. It is owing to his never-ending activities that we are able to appreciate composers such as Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaidulina, Valentin Silvestrov, Luigi Nono, Aribert Reimann, John Adams and Astor Piazzolla, while being able to experience classical music in a new way, one that bears tradition and at the same time remains contemporary.

Deeply committed to chamber music, his music festival in the small Austrian village of Lockenhaus, founded in 1981, is the realization of his belief that music can overcome all barriers of language and culture. Since 1992 the Lockenhaus musicians have been performing all over the world under the Kremerata Musica logo. On the occasion of ’s 200th birthday celebrations in 1997, they undertook a comprehensive concert cycle throughout Europe, including appearances at the Salzburg Festival.

In November 1996 Gidon Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra to foster outstanding young musicians from the three Baltic States. The Kremerata Baltica, which began undertaking regular concert tours with Kremer in 1997, has signed an exclusive, six-record deal with , of which Eight Seasons (2000) was the inaugural release, followed by Silencio (2000) and After Mozart(2001). In 1997 Gidon Kremer also took over leadership of the Musiksommer Gstaad (Switzerland), in succession to Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

Kremer began studying the violin at the age of four with his father and grandfather, and in 1965 he became a student of David Oistrach’s master class at the Moscow Conservatory. He has since been awarded the most prestigious violinist prizes, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and the Paganini Competition in Genoa, among others. He has also received many music awards such as the Frankfurt Music Award, the Ernst von Siemens Music Award, the first prize at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and the Federal Service Cross of Germany. Kremer has appeared on virtually every major concert stage with the most celebrated orchestras of Europe and America, and has recorded with today’s foremost conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Christoph Eschenbach, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan and Riccardo Muti. Gidon Kremer plays a Guarneri del Gesù - ex David - dating from 1730.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Classical Packaging Specs: Reissue with new softpak packaging Description: One of the most original artists of his generation, violinist Gidon Kremer performs the work of composer, arranger, bandoneon virtuoso and tango master Piazzolla, displaying a new dimension in both his playing and repertoire for Hommage a Piazzolla. Kremer (who collaborated with Adams on the Nonesuch release of Adams' Violin Concerto has assembled a group of musicians modeled after the legendary quintet Piazzolla used for his performances--violin, guitar, bass, piano and bandoneon. On Hommage a Piazzolla Kremer is highly successful at conjuring that emotional tug-of-war in his interpretations of Piazzolla's music. His passionate readings of the composer's works range from haunting to romantic to rigorous to melancholy. One of the world's best known classical violinists, Kremer ventures into this musical style for the first time.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Blues Radio Formats: Public/Non-Comm, AAA, Blues and Jazz Description:

Hugh Laurie will release his debut album Let Them Talk on September 6th on Warner Bros. Records. A glorious celebration of New Orleans blues, Let Them Talk unites Laurie's musical talent with a very personal selection of standards and lost blues classics performed with his band of renowned musicians and some very special guest stars.

Produced by and recorded at sessions in Los Angeles and New Orleans, Let Them Talk sees Laurie on vocals and piano heading a team of musicians whose previous collective credits include work with artists as varied as Greg Allman, , , kd lang, T-Bone Burnett, , and . Together, they interpret and revive songs originally recorded by New Orleans blues legends such as , Robert Johnson, Ray Charles, and Memphis Slim.

Let Them Talk also features collaborations with the "Soul Queen of New Orleans" Irma Thomas and Sir Tom Jones on the little known "Baby, Please Make A Change." Thomas also leads the vocals on "John Henry," while Laurie's lifelong hero Dr. John provides a momentous collaboration on "After You've Gone." Another legend, the producer, musician, and songwriter , contributes horn arrangements throughout.

"In my imagination, New Orleans just straight hummed with music, romance, joy, despair; its rhythms got into my gawky English frame and, at times, made me so happy and sad, I just didn't know what to do with myself," said Laurie. "I love this music as authentically as I know how, and I want you to love it too. If you get a thousandth of the pleasure from it that I've had, we're all ahead of the game."

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Los Angeles, CA Band Members: Hugh Laurie (vocals, piano) (drums) David Piltch (bass) Greg Leisz (guitar, dobro, ) Patrick Warren (keys) Kevin Breit (guitar, tenor, mandolin) With horns arranged by Allen Toussaint

ARTIST & INFO Hometown:

New York, NY

Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990s. Mehldau's most consistent output over the years has taken place in the trio format. Starting in 1996, his group released a series of five records on Warner Bros. entitled The Art of the Trio. Mehldau also has a solo piano recording entitled , and a record called Places that includes both solo piano and trio songs. Elegiac Cycle and Places might be called "concept" albums. They are made up exclusively of original material and have central themes that hover over the compositions. Other Mehldau recordings include Largo , a collaborative effort with the innovative musician and producer Jon Brion, and Anything Goes-a trio outing with bassist and drummer .His first record for Nonesuch, Brad Mehldau Live in Tokyo, was released in 2004. After ten rewarding years with Rossy playing in Mehldau's regular trio, drummer Jeff Ballard joined the band in 2005. The label releasesd its first album from the Brad Mehldau Trio-Day is Done -in 2005.

Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes the surprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he also has a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing, the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in a beginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personality-the improviser and the formalist-play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. His performances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process of abstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a stripped down, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over the years, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

In addition to his trio and solo projects, Mehldau has worked with a number of great jazz musicians, including a rewarding gig with saxophonist Joshua Redman's band for two years, recording and concerts with Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz, and recording as a sideman with the likes of Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, and Charles Lloyd. For more than a decade, he has collaborated with several musicians and peers whom he respects greatly, including the guitarists Peter Bernstein and Kurt Rosenwinkel and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. Mehldau also has played on a number of recordings outside of the jazz idiom, like 's Teatro and singer-songwriter Joe Henry's Scar . His music has appeared in several movies, including Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut and Wim Wender's Million Dollar Hotel . He also composed an original soundtrack for the French film, Ma Femme Est Une Actrice. Mehldau also composed two new works commissioned by Carnegie Hall for voice and piano, The Blue Estuaries and The Book of Hours: Love Poems to God, which were performed in the spring of 2005 with the acclaimed classical soprano, Renee Fleming. These songs were recorded with Fleming and released in 2006 on the record; simultaneously, Nonesuch released an album of Mehldau's jazz compositions for trio entitled .

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: New York, NY

On Pat Metheny's ambitious, experimental 2010 Orchestrion -named Jazz Album of the Year in Downbeat's 2010 Reader's Poll -- -the guitarist and composer employed a phalanx of custom-made robotic instruments to create a thrilling and decidedly futuristic sort of "solo" recording. For What's It All About, he simply picked up his baritone guitar. This ten-song disc is the first in Metheny's nearly forty-year recording career to feature an entire set of material drawn from outside composers, but, as one might expect, it's far from an ordinary "covers" album. Metheny, ruminates upon, improvises around and at times deconstructs the melodies of these Top 40 numbers, songs he heard growing up in the sixties and early seventies and that have resonated with him ever since. They include such iconic tracks as "The Girl From Ipanema," "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Alfie," in which the already haunting movie theme is distilled to its gorgeously melancholy essence. These intimate, unadorned performances, recorded alone by Metheny in his New York City apartment, represent a process of rediscovery more than reinterpretation. Rich with personal meaning, they are as revealing about Metheny's creative process and fertile imagination as about the malleability of the songs themselves.

What's It All About, in approach, serves as a companion to Metheny's austerely beautiful 2003 Grammy Award-winning One Quiet Night, a solo disc in which Metheny first began to explore the possibilities of his new baritone guitar. As Metheny, the recipient of 17 Grammy Awards to date, explains, "I really wanted to keep it simple - one guitar, one player, as was the case on One Quiet Night. There are no overdubs on the record. But where this one differs from One Quiet Night is that I really focused on each tune along the way. Sometimes I would sit and think about each piece for hours before hitting the record button, practicing things and imagining a final performance. There are some edits here and there where I found sort of an idealized version of what I was shooting for, but the idea was to stay true to a particular way of playing and hearing the song by again, keeping the performance aspect of it really simple....I was able to get to what I wanted just sitting there with the instrument in hand." Along with the baritone guitar, he also picks up a nylon string guitar for his rendition of "And I Love Her"; a six-string for the Chantay's "Pipeline"; and a custom-made 42-string, harp-like Pikasso guitar for a stunning, opening-track take on " Of Silence." Metheny's plucking of the Pikasso recalls the sound of the Japanese Koto, underscoring the contemplative nature of this enterprise.

London's The Guardian recently cited Metheny as part of its Great Moments in Jazz series, noting, "Metheny is that rare jazz musician who combines a pop-composer's instinct for an anthemic melody with a virtuoso ability to play extended spontaneous solos without repeating himself....More than any other jazz guitarist of the post-bop era, Pat Metheny has given the instrument as natural and prominent a place in jazz as a trumpet or a saxophone." Comments Metheny himself, "My goal has always been to honestly represent the music that I really love in everything I do. This is really just another chapter in that ongoing search for the good notes."

01 Steve Reich: Mallet Quartet - By So Percussion & Steve Reich

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Classical Description:

Nonesuch releases Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steve Reich's WTC 9/11 on September 6, 2011. The album marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, which is the subject of Reich's piece. Commissioned for and recorded by Kronos Quartet, WTC 9/11 is scored for three string quartets and pre-recorded voices. The album also includes Reich's Mallet Quartet, performed by SÅ Percussion, and Dance Patterns, featuring members of Steve Reich and Musicians, as well as a DVD with a live performance of Mallet Quartet by SÅ Percussion.

WTC 9/11 reflects on the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001, when Reich and his family lived only four blocks away from the site of the tragedy. "On 9/11 we were in Vermont, but our son, granddaughter, and daughter-in-law were all in our apartment. Our phone connection stayed open for six hours and our next-door neighbors were finally able to drive north out of the city with their family and ours. For us, 9/11 was not a media event," the composer says.

The piece is scored for three string quartets; Kronos recorded all three parts for the album. WTC 9/11 also uses pre-recorded voices, the speakers' final vowels and consonants elongated in a stop-motion sound technique that Reich says is the "means of connecting one person to another-harmonically." Those voices and their texts belong to NORAD air traffic controllers, as they raised the alert that the airplanes were off course; FDNY workers on the scene; friends and former neighbors of the Reichs, recalling that day; and women who kept vigil, or Shmira, over the dead in a tent outside the Medical Examiner's office, reading Psalms or Biblical passages. The relationship between Steve Reich and Kronos Quartet spans more than 20 years. This is the third quartet the composer has written for Kronos; all three have been recorded by Nonesuch.

Mallet Quartet (2009), co-commissioned and performed by SÅ Percussion, is scored for two and two five-octave . The New York Times said of a recent Carnegie Hall performance: "SÅ Percussion's energetic account...pointed up one of Mr. Reich's current modes of propulsion: a two-tiered approach in which the rhythmically repetitive backdrop that listeners hear as Minimalist (and as the music's distinctively Reichian signature) is offset by restless, melodically adventurous top lines. There were other contrasts here: the repeating figures, for marimbas, were dark and subdued, with a warm, wooden tone; the themes, played on vibraphones, were cool, bright and lively."

Dance Patterns (2002) is Reich's contribution to Thierry de Mey's film Counterphrases of Anne Terese de Keersmaeker's Choreography, for which several composers wrote short pieces. While the film was shown, the music was performed live by the Ictus Ensemble, which commissioned all the music. Scored for vibraphones, xylophones, and , Dance Patterns features members of Steve Reich and Musicians on the Nonesuch recording.

ARTIST & INFO Band Members: Kronos Quartet, SÅ Percussion Steve Reich has been hailed as "America's greatest living composer" (The Village Voice), "the most original musical thinker of our time" (The New Yorker), and "among the great composers of the century" (New York Times). From his early taped speech pieces It's Gonna Rain (1965) and (1966) to his and video artist Beryl Korot's digital video opera (2002), Reich's path has embraced not only aspects of Western Classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz. "There's just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history, and Steve Reich is one of them," states The Guardian (London).

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: santo amaro, bahia

Caetano Veloso, dubbed "one of the greatest songwriters of the century" (New York Times), is among the most influential and beloved artists to emerge from Brazil. Known there since the 1960s, Veloso has made more than 30 recordings to date and has developed a strong international following.

Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, in 1942, Caetano Veloso began his professional musical career in 1965 in São Paulo. In his first compositions he drew on the bossa novas of João Gilberto, but rapidly began to develop his own distinctive style. Absorbing musical and aesthetic ideas from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists, and the Brazilian modernist poets of the 1920s, Caetano, together with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, his sister Maria Bethânia, and a number of other poets and intellectuals, founded a movement called Tropicália. By experimenting with new sounds and words, adding electric guitars to their bands, and utilizing the imagery of modern poetry, Caetano became a musical revolutionary.

This short-lived movement, founded in 1968, ended abruptly when Caetano and Gil were sent into exile and lived in London. Now universally credited with redefining what is known as Brazilian music, it laid the groundwork for a renaissance of Brazilian popular music both at home and abroad. Caetano and Gil returned to Brazil in 1972 and found that Tropicália had remained intact and their audience had continued to grow.

Although Tropicália set the tone for Caetano's career, his music has evolved greatly over the years. Incorporating elements of rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba canão, baião, and rap-with lyrics containing some of the best poetry in a musical tradition rich in verse-Caetano's music is sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, often hybrid. At once an astute social commentator and balladeer of highly emotive love songs, Caetano is one of the most respected poets in the Portuguese language. Indeed he is one of only a handful of artists who has resolved how to be musically modern and still undeniably Brazilian.

Veloso followed his 1999 Grammy Award-winning Nonesuch release, Livro, an album which garnered widespread critical acclaim in the US and brought with it his first-ever US tour, with a soundtrack for the Carlos Diegues film Orfeu. In spring 2001, Nonesuch released Noites do Norte (Nights of the North), a meditation on themes of race, slavery, and Brazil's quest for a national identity. Later that year came Omaggio a Federico e Giulietta, a live recording made in 1997 in Rimini in honor of two masters of Italian cinema, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina. The following year brought another live album, a double disc recorded in Caetano's home state, called Live in Bahia, released in conjunction with the publication, by Knopf, of Caetano's long-awaited memoir, Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil.

In September 2003, Nonesuch released The Best of Caetano Veloso, a retrospective of Veloso's work from 1989 to 2001, including a live rendition of the haunting "Cucurrucucú Paloma," featured in Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her. The following spring came A Foreign Sound, his first all-English set, paying tribute to 20th-century American pop composers, from Cole Porter to Kurt Cobain. And in January 2007, Veloso, backed by a young Brazilian trio, created a surprisingly brash rock sound for the album Cê, about which the Boston Globe notes, "The man's voice is as richly seductive and thoughtful as ever." His lyrics "offer intellectual and cultural queries ... suffused with yearning and ambiguous eroticism."

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Rock

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Wasilla, AK/Portland, OR Since their formation in 2005, Portugal. The Man has captured the attention of the American indie scene with their extraordinary amalgamation of electronic beats, complex melodies, and atmospheric post-rock soundscapes. Portugal. The Man are firmly dedicated to the rock and roll scripture-record, tour, repeat as necessary-the band still remain unsettled on the outskirts of any set genres. With untethered roots, the band offers an audible adaptability, one unlike anything offered by their peers, that allows their music to form over a gradual incubation process. Songs are birthed and then organically evolve over the course of the band's seemingly endless slate of tour dates, along with the sliver of downtime they allow themselves.
