30 / 31 March 2011

Lecture summary:

This lecture will offer an overview of the flourishing of Aboriginal art in the 20 th century, with an emphasis on the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ permanent collection. Charting the development of the collection, this talk will look at some of the key movements during the latter half of the century and discuss the reasons for the absence of Indigenous art from the public eye in early decades. Some of the subjects to be considered are the emergence of regional movements, cultural dialogue in the arts and the rise to prominence of women artists.
