3 Flushing Meadows Corona Park Strategic Framework Plan
Possible reconfiguration of the Meadow Lake edge with new topographic variation Flushing Meadows Corona Park Strategic Framework Plan 36 Quennell Rothschild & Partners | Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects Vision & Goals The river and the lakes organize the space of the Park. Our view of the Park as an ecology of activity calls for a large-scale reorganization of program. As the first phase in the installation of corridors of activity we propose to daylight the Flushing River and to reconfigure the lakes to create a continuous ribbon of water back to Flushing Bay. RECONFIGURE & RESTORE THE LAKES Flushing Meadows Corona Park is defined by water. Today, the Park meets Flushing Bay at its extreme northern channel without significantly impacting the ecological characteristics of Willow and Meadow Lakes and their end. At its southern end, the Park is dominated by the two large lakes, Willow Lake and Meadow Lake, created for shorelines. In fact, additional dredged material would be valuable resource for the reconfiguration of the lakes’ the 1939 World’s Fair. shoreline. This proposal would, of course, require construction of a larger bridge at Jewel Avenue and a redesign of the Park road system. The hydrology of FMCP was shaped by humans. The site prior to human interference was a tidal wetland. Between 1906 and 1934, the site was filled with ash and garbage. Historic maps prior to the ‘39 Fair show the Flushing To realize the lakes’ ecological value and their potential as a recreation resource with more usable shoreline and Creek meandering along widely varying routes through what later became the Park. -

What started as a small, isolated railroad town in 1905, is now the fastest growing city in the country and one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. For much of its history, Las Vegas created its own identity as a city by borrowing from everyone else’s. Walk along the famous Las Vegas Strip and you’ll see New York skyscrapers, the canals of Venice and even a version of the Eiffel Tower. The city’s architecture often stretches the bounds of the imagination and structural engineering. Constantly making things bigger, better, higher or longer is what drives Las Vegas forwards and what continues to create one of the world’s most vibrant skylines. “So much of Las Vegas falls under the heading “it has to be seen to be believed.” Jeff Maguire 2 BUILDING HISTORY English 3 “Las Vegas is the only place I know where money really talks – it says, Goodbye.” Frank Sinatra Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign The classic 25 ft. -

LEGO Architecture Iconizes One of the World's Most Inspiring Modern Day
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LEGO® Architecture Iconizes One of the World’s Most Inspiring ® Modern Day Marvels - Marina Bay Sands 04 December 2013 - One of the most amazing achievements that man has ever attained is the mastery of structural engineering through great architecture. Celebrating these masterpieces through its Architecture series, The LEGO Group (TLG) officially iconize Marina Bay Sands®, a state-of-the-art modern day marvel, with its LEGO® bricks. Voted as one of the most inspiring structures of recent times through an online poll on the LEGO® Architecture website, this model focuses on the signature hotel complex that showcases the three towers and the Sands Skypark which is the centrepiece of Singapore’s skyline and urban renewal strategy today. The integrated resort, designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie, opened in April 2010 and has welcomed 38.5 million visitors in 2012 alone. “LEGO Architecture is about celebrating great architecture and historical landmarks that we, as a people, have emotional connections to and whether it is because of the fascinating story behind a famous building or a souvenir of a memorable trip. LEGO Architecture is definitely for everyone.” says Mette Have Larsen-Ledet, Senior Marketing Manager on LEGO Architecture. “It is an honour for Marina Bay Sands to be selected as Singapore’s landmark to be interpreted with iconic LEGO bricks. Marina Bay Sands is often viewed as a piece of art with our striking architecture and the Architecture Series will allow guests from all over the world to bring a piece of Singapore landscape back home with them. LEGO has been inspiring people with the unlimited possibilities of arranging the bricks and we hope to continue this with the Marina Bay Sands set,” said Maunik Thacker, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Marina Bay Sands.
