November, a Historical Event Took Place in the Village of Anatongre Editor’s Note... Dear Readers, On the 26th November, a historical event took place in the village of Anatongre. It was the blessing and dedication of newly the constructed Catholic Church. Catholics from all parts of Nagaland, gathered together for the event, to encourage the handful of Catholics who stood all odds to remain faithful to their convictions. What touched the hearts and brought tears into the eyes of all who participated in the momentous event was not the paraphernalia that surrounded the event but the spontaneous regret expressed in a tangible way by the Baptist community, who had in the past fought tooth and nail, obstructing the Catholic Church from entering into the village and establishing her presence. It was a sort of public confession, done in a traditional way. The elders and youngsters, clad in traditional attire, in unison sung a traditional song, with a touch of melancholy and asked God and their catholic brethren’s forgiveness for all the harm inflicted in the past. As I listened to the words of the songs, I forgot everything and I was overtaken by emotion, which was best expressed through my soaked eyes. I am sure, everyone who understood it’s meaning has felt the same. It is an amazing gesture from the part of the Baptist brethren. I do not know what prompted them to come forward and express in public the remorse of their past actions but one thing, I am convinced, there was the intervention of God. No matter, who we are, we all belong to a God who is loving and we are brothers and sisters to each other. Months of November and December are the time of tribal Cultural festivals. Such cultural festivals are proceeded by the festival of all festivals, the Christmas. The whole world is gearing up to celebrate the most important event in the history of the world. The towns and villages are getting illumined, shops are filled with gifts and decorations, new Christmas songs are all out, people from the hills and remote villages are travelling down to the plains to purchase Christmas gift and the shop keepers are all extraordinarily courteous. All these are on account of this great festival called Christmas. Today Christmas mean different things to different people. For shop keepers, it’s a time to make money, for people who are working away from the families, it’s the time of reunion and so on. But for us, Catholics it is the celebration of God’s love towards each one of us, because out of his love, he opted to send his only Son with gifts of peace, love and Joy. These are gratuitous gift from God. Pope Pius VI once said, “we consider Christmas as the encounter, the great encounter, the historical encounter, the decisive encounter, between God and mankind. He who has faith knows this truly; let him rejoice” Unfortunately, to a large extent, these gifts have eluded the world. There is violence, unforgiveness, intolerance in the world. We can be beacons of these gifts, only when we recognize God’s generosity. Simple acts of unselfishness and thoughtfulness are at the heart of Christmas. Roy L Smith once said, “He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree”. In the midst of external preparation, let’s remind ourselves that our hearts have to become mangers for Jesus so that he can dwell in us. I wish all the readers, a joy- filled Christmas and prosperous New Year 2014. 12345678 12345678 12345678 12345678 12345678 123456781 BISHOP’S PROGRAMME EDITOR DECEMBER 2013 - FEBRUARY 2014 Fr. A glance back into the rearview mirror reveals a past rife with great accomplishments by so many Knights of this Council and collectively, the strides made by the Council as a whole. And while looking back at times is helpful, we must also look forward and keep a keen eye on what is to come. With the February Business Meeting at hand we will begin planning the man power and chores needed for our February Social which is “Ladies Appreciation Night”. Yes, time to host our Ladies, serve them a delicious dinner expertly cooked by Brother Knights Wayland Moody and Harold Jackson while we Knights do the prep, set up and most importantly, serve our better halves. Put another way, we will wait on them hand and foot! But wait! There is more! March brings our annual Fish Fry’s, set on two Fridays in the Lenten Season which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14th. Again this huge fund raiser, clearly an “all hands” event, is managed by Brothers Wayland and Harold and is the source of Council funds sorely needed to continue our support of Church, Community and all that we do. Brothers, please do your best to pitch in for the Fish Fry’s and do your part to help make them a resounding success.

Alper Life Doesn't Get Any Better Than This: The Holiness of Little Daily Dramas by Robert A. Alper. Advertising for Love. By Rabbi Bob Alper. "G-D DOES NOT PUNISH the shadchan (matchmaker) for telling lies," the Yiddish proverb tells us, and so, I suppose, the writers of some personals ads might also be forgiven their slight exaggerations. Just a few years ago, personals ads were considered the bastion of true losers, those folks with no social skills, unable to find love in the traditional ways. Nowadays, the classifieds of Jewish weeklies and other papers have become the "meet markets" of the millenium, festooned with cleverly worded messages. And the happy fact is, they often work. I read these postings every chance I get. There's a little bit of shadchan in me, too; I'm always on the lookout for someone who'd be a perfect match for a few of my single friends. Plus, I'm fascinated by the ways people describe themselves and articulate their desires. Nearly everyone is either pretty or handsome, intelligent but with a great sense of humor, a homebody who enjoys all sports. And it's enlightening to realize that seven out of ten people apparently spend a good part of their waking moments "taking long walks on the beach." I've been saving favorite personals ads for several years. Everyone's looking for a soulmate; a couple of older women got down to specifics: "Widow with perfect figure desires one-woman man in 60s who has concern for Israel's survival." "European widowed Jewish professional, attractive, bright, humorous, seeks tall male counterpart, under 65, with own hair and teeth.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church @ @ @ @ @ Greenville, South Carolina 21 January 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, This Thursday, 25 January, is the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, the Church’s annual celebration of the day when Saul of Tarsus met the Lord Jesus on the Damascus Road — an event that changed Saul’s life and the history of the world. 25 January is also each year the final day in a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, an observance that begins on 18 January, the date in the old liturgical calendar which was the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter. So, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was devised to run between the twin feasts of the symbol of Peter’s authority to teach and Paul’s conversion to Christ, and this placement in the liturgical calendar shows us how Christian unity is to be found: through continuing conversion to the truth of the Gospel proclaimed authentically and authoritatively by the apostolic office of the Church. In praying for Christian unity, we are asking God to restore full ecclesial communion to our separated brethren (both Orthodox and Protestant) in the one, true Church. But the restoration of that unity will be a world-historical event brought about only by the action of the Holy Spirit, and there is little that any of us can do to contribute directly to that lofty goal. There is, however, another dimension of Christian unity to which we can contribute personally, and it is both utterly simple and extremely difficult: we can each live in full communion with the Lord Jesus and his holy Church and do our best to show others how to do the same.

  • Parish News for the First Time Since 1945, Valentine’S Day Falls This Year on Ash Wednesday (A Day on Which Catholics Fast and Also Abstain from Meat)
St. Mary’s Catholic Church @ @ @ @ @ Greenville, South Carolina 4 February 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, Ash Wednesday is ten days away, and this year for the first time since 1945 Ash Wednesday coincides with the secular observance of Valentine’s Day. However, no dispensation from penance, fasting, and abstinence is given for Ash Wednesday, so if you intend to celebrate Valentine’s Day, it will need to be sometime other than 14 February. Perhaps Mardi Gras on 13 February would be the best choice. To help you keep a holy Lent, we invite you to join us each Sunday of Lent for Vespers at 5 pm and each Friday of Lent for the Way of the Cross at 6 pm. Vespers is part of the Church’s official daily prayer called the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours, and our Sunday Vespers consists of thirty minutes of sacred silence, plainchant, and polyphony which together make an extraordinary experience of peaceful prayer. The Stations of the Cross are a summary of the path taken by the Lord Jesus on Good Friday from Pilate’s praetorium, through the streets of Jerusalem, to Calvary, to death on the Cross, and finally to burial in the Holy Sepulchre. Following Christ in the Way of the Cross has for centuries been a privileged way of growing closer to the Lord Jesus, and we invite you to come each Friday of Lent for this devotion and then stay for a simple supper of soup and sandwiches in Pazdan Hall. And to both Vespers and the Way of the Cross, please bring a friend, most especially a lapsed Catholic or a non-Catholic who might be interested in learning more about Catholic Christianity.
