Grand Knight’s Message

Another month comes to a close and we venture into the second and shortest month of this New Year, February. A glance back into the rearview mirror reveals a past rife with great accomplishments by so many Knights of this Council and collectively, the strides made by the Council as a whole. And while looking back at times is helpful, we must also look forward and keep a keen eye on what is to come. With the February Business Meeting at hand we will begin planning the man power and chores needed for our February Social which is “Ladies Appreciation Night”. Yes, time to host our Ladies, serve them a delicious dinner expertly cooked by Brother Knights Wayland Moody and Harold Jackson while we Knights do the prep, set up and most importantly, serve our better halves. Put another way, we will wait on them hand and foot! But wait! There is more! March brings our annual Fish Fry’s, set on two Fridays in the Lenten Season which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14th. Again this huge fund raiser, clearly an “all hands” event, is managed by Brothers Wayland and Harold and is the source of Council funds sorely needed to continue our support of Church, Community and all that we do. Brothers, please do your best to pitch in for the Fish Fry’s and do your part to help make them a resounding success. And with that look into the rear view mirror, as of this writing, Past Grand Knight and Trustee Lenny Tittle and I began delivering the checks to Special Olympics and Berkeley Citizens, both in the amount of $4,710.00 and will also deliver a check in the amount of $1,046 to Healing Farms, another organization focused on helping those with special needs. None of this could have happened without all the hard work manning the “tootsie roll” drive this year led by Brother Larry Rocco and his wife Ann. All this fueled by all the Knights of our Council, too numerous to list here and then culminated with our Columbus Hope Foundation Auction and Banquet, led by PGK Lenny Tittle and wife Cristina. Again, many Knights worked so hard to solicit goods and donations for the Auction. It was all of this that once again gave our Council the ability to earn the funds to make these donations. Thank you all for all that you do! Page - 1

Grand Knight’s Message continued… But wait, there is more. The Trustees of our Council has begun the task of working on a list of Knights to step up into leadership roles and continue all that this Council does. Some of you may have been contacted as of now, and others most assuredly will be. But please, help these Brother Knights in regards to this task. Do not wait for them to contact you. Step up and contact PGK’s and Trustees Steve Gearhart, Mike Cousino and Len Tittle. If you are not sure which position might be a good fit for you and your talents, ask them the simple question; how can I help? The satisfaction that you will get from helping steer this Council forward, and the lessons you will learn will help you as you grow in your professional, spiritual and family life.

Council 11991 Annual Lenten Fish Fry Days Save These Dates! Friday March 16 & Friday March 23

Every year, Brother Knights Howard Jackson and Waylon Moody go to great labor in planning and execution of the Council’s only fund raiser the Council conduct that directly benefits our Council. Without these successful fund raising events, the Council would not be able to fund a lot of Council’s charitable activities and much needed yearly purchases. These fund raising events involve everyone in the counsel AND their families. What can YOU do to ensure success? Work the event! We start at the Community Center early, setting up the hall, preparing in the kitchen, setting up the cooking area and of course the all day food preparation, serving and clean up. Just show up when you can and leave when you have to but JOIN US! Provide desserts for the dinners! Bring simple grab & go desserts (like cookies, cupcakes & brownies) with you when you come to work, arrive for dinner or just plain drop them off. Promote this event with your families and friends! If you have attended one of these dinners before, you well know that this dinner is one of the best Lenten Fish Fries in town. Great food and AYCE! and finally… Come and Eat! The success depends on dinner sales! Page - 2

District Deputy’s Message

As your DD nears his 5th and FINAL year…

The other evening a Knight said something that initially really irked me. He said we need to recruit younger men into the KNIGHTS. My first reaction was anger. Why? Why you say…well I long ago was the fellow in the council that took care of Membership-you know finding new men. But everything he said was dead on.

2 Days ago I got my “Knightline” and what is in there but more rah-rah about bringing in younger members. I really wanted to be upset, really. But our future as an organization is at stake if we cannot bring in those younger men wanting and willing to be Knights.

How will this happen? I don’t have all the answers, sorry. But maybe you have at least some of them. I know for a fact that your Membership Director needs your help (all of our help). I suggest that you write down your ideas (however wild they may be-this coming from and old guy like me). We never know the results until we at least attempt it. Right?

Consider this…do you like being a Knight? If the answer is yes; then PLEASE don’t pass up the opportunity to help your council grow by finding more men, No finding some younger men because we can’t afford to learn because we did nothing-we no longer have the Knights of Columbus.

Our Field Agent’s Message

Vivat Jesus!

Brother Knights Is your income protected if you become sick or injured and cannot work? Your ability to work and earn an income is your most valuable asset. Yet a disability could prevent you from earning that income. Just one year of a disability could eliminate your savings. Income Armor, an individual disability income insurance product from the Knights of Columbus, should be a key part of your overall financial plan and family’s protection. If you are ill or injured, Income Armor provides tax-free monthly benefits to help you meet living expenses and maintain you and your family’s standard of living. Your monthly benefits help you pay your mortgage and other monthly bills, while your savings and retirement assets remain intact. In short, if you have a job and don’t have a way to protect that paycheck, you should seriously consider Income Armor today. I look forward to meeting with you.

Yours in Christ & God Bless Your Knights of Columbus Field Agent Brandon Chambers 843-224-3022 [email protected]

Ongoing Events

These three Ongoing Events are chaired by our very own SK John Flinn: EYEGLASSES FOR THE NEEDY – Our Council’s partnership continues with the Lion’s Club in collecting old or disused eyeglasses and cases in usable condition. At last report, the Council collected 159 eyeglasses and 84 cases. If you have some available for donation, please bring them to church with you and deposit them in the receptacle in the Vestibule.

At our last O&D meeting, Frank Strunk donated a large bag of glasses and cases turned in to lost & found at the Charleston Airport Rental Car Companies

STAMPS FOR SISTERS OF THE HOLY CROSS – This is another Ongoing Program with the Council. The stamps we collect and donate are sent to The Sisters of the Holy Cross in Notre Dame, Indiana. They have in their quarterly publication gratefully acknowledged the donations we have made to their Ministry with the Poor. Please continue to support this ministry and encourage others to help us. Place used postage stamps in the receptacle in the vestibule of our church. To date, we have sent the Sisters 11 boxes of stamps!

TABS FOR THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE – At last report, John made another delivery of tabs this month bringing our total to 220 gallons to date! All those individuals that participate in this simple ministry clearly demonstrate their compassion for others. John Flinn adds: ‘My brother Knights that provide tabs are some of the greatest people I know. Please communicate to those people who provide you with tabs our appreciation.’ Bring your pull tabs with you to any of our meetings or socials and give them to SK John Flinn.

St. Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697, Goose Creek, SC

Faithful Navigator’s Message A Man’s Country is Not a Certain Area of land, of Mountains, Rivers, and Woods, but it is a Principle. Patriotism is Loyalty to that Principle

I really thought that the Assembly Honor Guard was about to get some well-deserved time off but then the District Master called me and requested that the St Francis Caracciolo Color Guard lead the “Stand Up For Life Rally and March in Columbia on January 6th. What an exhilarating feeling. Assembling with all of the supporters including Sir Knights throughout the State wearing the colorful capes of red, white, purple, green and gold that soon would be marching onto the steps of the State House proclaiming the end to abortion. Proudly carrying the flags of the United States, the Papal Flag of the Vatican, the State Flag of South Carolina and the flag representing the Knights of Columbus. I thought it was the wind chill as we turned onto Gervias St in Columbia that caused the “goose bumps”. No it was who we are and what we stand for. If you should get a chance, ask any member of the Color Corp or Honor Guard the emotions you experience when you don the cape and chapeau of the Fourth Degree. May they never take it away.

Also, the services of the Honor Guard were requested to lead the procession of the Santo Nino at the St Thomas the Apostle Church in North Charleston on January 20th. It was the first time in 17 years that the Knights of Columbus participated at this Mass. Coincidentally, our Faithful Friar, Reverend Sir Knight Jason Caganap CRM, celebrated the Mass. It was truly an honor to serve our Assembly Filipino Brothers and Sisters. Vivat Jesus!

Religiously devoted and patriotically proud, the Fourth Degree members always stand firm is support of the order while proudly serving the Country. They show unwavering support of the faith while honoring the legacy of Knighthood.

Interested in joining our Order? Talk to a Sir Knight of his personal experiences of belonging to an Order unlike any other. The requirements are that you need to be a Third Degree Knight “In Good Standing”. The next Fourth Degree Exemplification will be held at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church in Columbia on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Veteran’s Victory Home, Walterboro: To honor our continuing patriotic commitment, we ask that all continue to bring toiletry articles to any of our meetings and socials throughout the year. These items will be collected and shared between the Walterboro Veteran’s Victory Home and the Felician Sisters in Kingstree. The Veteran’s Victory Home also asks for craft items, books (prefer large print), periodicals and newspapers. Some of these items are used in their therapy sessions. The adult coloring books with colored pencils are exceptionally popular.

Our Lady of Joyful Hope: The Felician Sisters in Kingstree continue to help those in desperate need with the basics of food, clothing and shelter, and humbly ask for help in replenishing their pantry with food, toiletry and hygiene items. Sister Johnna said that hygiene items are in regular short supply, and based on a recent visit we made, their food pantry is pretty well depleted. We will continue to collect toiletry and hygiene items to help with restocking. The cash donation we made was timely and very welcome. Therefore, at each meeting, social or gathering we will have a box available in which to put any donated items. These we will then deliver to the Felician Sisters at the St. Anne Felician Center who remain humbly thankful for our donations.

Respect Life

As of February 1, over 8,030 babies have been saved! Every 30 seconds, a baby’s life is taken by abortion.

Human Coalition – Human Coalition is not just an organization… we are a family working together as volunteers, donors, and prayer warriors to end abortion in America. Over 3,000 children are aborted every day. This makes abortion the leading cause of death in America, killing about as many human beings as heart disease and cancer combined. To say the killing of over 1 million innocent preborn children every year is the most pressing justice issue of our day is an understatement. Unfortunately, it barely registers on most Americans’ radar.

With unwavering hope, For LIFE! We continue to affirm that abortion will not be ended in the Courts – It will be ended in our Culture!” So Every Child Makes Their Mark, Brian Fisher Co-Founder and President, Https://www.humancoalition.org

South Carolina Citizens for Life – The first civil right is the RIGHT TO LIFE! South Carolina Citizens for Life is a single-issue, non-profit organization that exists solely to promotes legislation to protect innocent human life from abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide, and euthanasia. Our success has depended on maintaining our single-issue focus on life. By focusing on the single issue of life, we have been able to bring together a broad base of people – who may disagree on other important issues in our state, but who are dedicated to ensuring that the protection of our laws are extended to the most vulnerable members of society: the unborn, the elderly, the medically dependent and persons with disabilities.

PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY: The Month of The Holy Family

In January, the Catholic Church celebrated the Month of the Holy Name of Jesus; and in February, we turn to the entire Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In sending His Son to earth as a Baby, born into a family, God elevated the family beyond a mere natural institution. Our own family life reflects that lived by Christ, in obedience to His mother and foster father. Both as children and as parents, we can take comfort in the fact that we have the perfect model of the family before us in the Holy Family. In this prayer, we ask God to keep the example of the Holy Family always before us, so that we will imitate them in our family life. One commendable practice is to gather the entire family and recite the prayer, which reminds us that we aren't saved individually. We all work out our salvation in conjunction with others—first and foremost, together with the other members of our family. Page - 15

For the Protection of the Holy Family: “Grant unto us, Lord Jesus, ever to follow the example of Thy holy Family, that in the hour of our death Thy glorious Virgin Mother together with blessed Joseph may come to meet us and we may be worthily received by Thee into everlasting dwellings: who lives and reigns world without end. Amen..”

PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for our citizens, particularly those in this, our United States, who have lost their lives, been misplaced or been injured due to dangerous weather and the unusual forest fires occurring on our left coast. Also, pray for an end to the continuing, and seemingly escalating, senseless violence in our country, and for the safety of all members of Law Enforcement, Fire Service and Emergency Services. Let us also pray that our national leadership will make decisions supporting religious freedom with positive effects on our entire Country.

PRAYER FOR OUR RELIGIOUS: We ask for your continued prayers for SK Jerry Caoile and SK James Baker as they continue their studies for the Diaconate program, and for our Seminarians and those other young men and women progressing in their religious discernment and studies.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our military servicemen and women - those who are now where many of us once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those in public safety.

“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life. Keep them close to You and help them live the Commandments. Lord, Jesus, give them courage to serve their Country with honor and dignity. Be with them when they are in danger strengthening them when they face hardships. And Lord, grant that, when their service is finished, they may return to us sound in mind, body and soul. In particular, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow man and Country. Amen.”

The Fruits of your Labor have been Harvested!

In December of last month, I submitted our Council’s Form CHF 102 to the State Council. It is a form that declares our grant requests from the State Council Columbus HOPE Foundation (CHF). This past year, our activities for CHF included Tootsie Roll Drives, Trash & Treasure Sales and of course, our annual Charity Auction Social in November. State Council responded to our submission of Form CHF 101 reporting that our Council had achieved 145% of our goals! Well done for the members and families that supported this drive. Today, we began the distribution of the vitally needed charity checks to the organizations we support in our community. Lenny Tittle, Council 11991 Columbus HOPE Foundation Chairman
