Introduction : came into existence as a separate district consequent upon reorganization of districts in Odisha on 1st April 1993,clothed with lush green forests. The district is rich in wildlife .The River passes through the district forming a 22 km long narrow gorge, one of the mistiest gorges in , popularly Satkosia. The district is surrounded by and in the east, and Deogarh in the west, and Keonjhar in the north and Kandhamal in the south.

Location : Angul district lies between 84° 16’ to 85° 23’ East longitude and between 20º 31’ N to 21º 41’ N latitude.

Area and Population : The district has an area of 6375 sq. kms and 12.74 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 4.09 percent of the states territory and shares 3.03 percent of the states population. The density population of the district is 200. per sq. kms. as against 270 person per sq. km. of the state. It has 1910 villages (including 249 un-inhabited villages) covering 8 blocks. 8 Tahasils and 4 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 239552 (18.8.%) and schedule tribe population is 179603 (14.1.%). The literacy percentage of the district constitutes 77.53 against 72.9 of the state.

Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot and high humidity during April to May and cold during November to December The monsoon generally breaks during the month of July, Average annual rainfall of the district was 1581.6 m.m during 2014, which is higher than the normal rainfall 1401.9 m.m.

Agriculture : During the year 2014-15 the net area sown was 103 thousand hectares against 4474 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 3410577 quantals, Wheat 44 quintals, maize 6121 quintals, ragi 6 quintals, mung 6930 quintals, biri 8967 quintals, kulthi 8225 quintals and til 4750 quintals , groundnuts 31935 quintals, mustard 595 quintals, potatoes 63223 quintals and sugarcane 21001 quintals. During 2014-15 the total fertilizers used in Angul district

1 is about 7940 MT with a breakage of 4480 M.T nitrogenous, 2609 M.T. phosphatic, 851 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 25.89 Kg. per hectare.

Irrigation : During the year 2013-14, it is reported by District Agriculture Officer, Angul and that the irrigation potential created in Angul district from various sources during Kharif and Rabi are 57458 and 30515 hectres respectively.

Education : During 2014-15, there are 961 nos. of primary schools 683 nos. of up-primary schools and 281 nos of secondary schools and 40 nos of General Collages are imparting general education. Besides, 2 nos. of Diploma engineering colleges and 1 no degree engineering college are functioning in Angul district to impart technical educations in the district.

Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt. Private individuals and voluntary organization in the district during 2014-15 There are 210 nos. of Allopathic medical institutions including Sub-Centers with 472 beds facilities. Besides 19 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 16 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries are working in the district.

Veterinary Services : During the year 2013-14, 16 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 79 nos. of livestock Aid centres were functioning in Angul district to provide veterinary services to the people.

Industry and Mining : The locational .advantage and abundant stock of manpower and raw materials have played an important role in the industrial development of the district. The important PSUS of the district are the NALCO, the MCL. Besides during the year 2014-15.,1011 nos of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises have been Established with total capital investment of about Rs 68386.94 lakhs with 7447 nos of Employment generated in Angul district. Besides various kinds of handicraft works like dhocra casting , bell metals , textile products have been developed by the skilled workers and artisans of the district.

Power : Consumption of electricity in Angul district during the year 2013-14 covers 1167.05 million units and villages so far electrified as on 31.03.2014, 1618 revenue villages which constitutes 97.4% to the total revenue villages of the district.

Tourist : There are 13 nos. of tourist center such as Angul, Banarpal, Bhimkand, Binikei, Bulajhar, , Tikarapada, Talchar, Handapa patrapada, Hingulapitha, khuladi, Rengali and Derjanga as identified by Department of Tourism and culture, Odisha. During 2015 the number of Domestic tourists were 758273 and foreign tourists were 241 who visited the tourists sports of the district.

Transport and Communication : During 2014-15, 254 Kms of National Highway 176 Kms. of State highways,1 Kms Major district roads, 509 kms. of other district roads. 708 Kms. of rural roads,5670 Kms of G.P Roads,656 Kms of P.S Roads and 456 kms. of forest roads are operating in the district. Besides 105.51 kms. of Railway lines with 12 nos. of railway stations including Passenger Halt are continuing in the district .

Banking : As on 31st December 2015, there were 170 nos. of All banks having deposit 6181.47 crores of rupees and credit of 2643.17 crores rupees in the district.


