A wonder of technology

Hank Murphy photo A city utilities worker observes professionals from Advanced Valve Technologies use a special machine purchased by the city to install a valve in a six-inch water line in the 900 block of Griffith Avenue this week. In this photo, the blue machine appears to jut upward 18 inches or so from the water pipe. The technology allows valves to be inserted without shutting off the flow of water through the line and interrupting service to neighborhoods. Gate valves such as this allow the city more flexibility in keeping a stable flow of water in all parts of the city. About half a dozen city workers observed the live valve insertion as part of training in the machine’s use. Dick Boyd, a city supervisor at the site, said the average cost of using a professional service to install a valve with a live flow of water is $35,000. The city will have paid for the new machine after just a few uses, he said. INSIDE TODAY

Each puzzle is divided into nine sections and each section has nine blank sqaures. Fill in all 81 sqaures on the puzzle with numbers 1 to 9. You may not repeat any numbers in any one of the nine sections that you’ve already used elsewhere in that section. Also, you can use each number 1-9 only once in each horizontal line of nine squares and in each verticle column of nine squares. The puzzle is complete when you correctly fill every square.

Courtesy Photo The Trinity Valley Cardinal cheerleaders are champions after winning the National Cheerleaders Association’s (NCA) title last week in Daytona Beach, Fla. The national title was the college's 12th. Cheerleading has the most national titles among all programs at TVCC. Cardinal cheerleaders also claimed national titles in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2016, and 2017. "This meant so much for the team and the school," said Trinity Valley Head Cheer Coach Javontae Johnson. "It was about time we brought it back to the Valley!" The team trailed by 2.3166 points after the preliminary round at the NCA National Championships on April 8. In the finals, Trinity Valley finished with a score of 98.9667 points, finishing ahead of Navarro College. The Cardinal cheerleaders competed in the Advanced Large Coed Junior College division. Last year, the Cardinals' season came to an abrupt end when the COVID-19 pandemic caused NCA to cancel the competition. TVCC’s Cardettes Showgirls bring home national championships

These girls have worked their muscles to get here, and worked incredibly hard last night to raise their scores after yesterday’s preliminary round,” said Cardettes Director Darla Mansfield. “I am in awe of their grit, determination and class.” Mansfield’s team beat out several four-year college teams to win their third and fourth DTU National Championship in five years.
