SUKMA 2018 The league consisted of some very high quality matches and for the Umpiring part of it, only the selected ones officiated. The teams were no short of talent, 8. National U14 roping in foreigners in their lineups. The Umpiring team too, for the first time in the history of the MHL had a foreign flavor, namely Hideki Kinoshita of Japan Kino had a great stint and easily adapted to the Malaysian hospitality and was easy to communicate with. The local Umpires did benefit very much from Kino just as Kino benefitted from the Malaysian’s. With this successful “test” stint, the Umpiring Committee is now looking into the prospects of engaging with a couple more exchange programs with top playing Nations in terms of Umpiring. As for our Umpires, the UC is pleased to note the progress that has taken place leading to the appointments of our umpires in the top Pro League of the FIH and the many FIH and AHF appointments our umpires have received in the various tournaments around the globe. For all these achievements, the UC would like to thank the parent body; the Malaysian Hockey Confederation who has played a pertinent role with is utmost support towards this achievement. The Umpiring fraternity in return pledges its support to the MHC and will uphold with integrity its promise to improve further the standards of Umpiring.

Mohd Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal, who has been training with the national team for more than a month, certainly has what it takes to be ruthless in front of goal. In the Malaysia Hockey League earlier this year, he plundered 11 goals for Tenaga Nasional and all of them from the shooting circle. Only 21, Azrai impressed former national coach Roelant Oltmans to be selected in the national team and has now gained the attention of newly minted coach S. Arul Selvaraj. Although Arul took over only a week ago, Azrai already sees the difference in the squad. "I have learnt lots of things. How to make quick passes and to com- municate better with your team- mates," said Azrai, who will turn out for Perak in the Razak Cup from Sept 18 to 26. "The players feel comfortable under coach Arul because we can interact openly." Azrai added that he is beginning to gel with the veteran forwards especially Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Ahmad Jalil. "Initially, there was some nerv- ousness. But after playing in the league with them and interacting during national call-ups, I'm feeling much better.
