Notte Bianca 2014 NOTTE BIANCA 2014 NOTTE BIANCA OPENING Venue: Valletta Entrance Time: 19:00 No night of festivities would be complete without a little pomp and circumstance. In that fashion Notte Bianca opens grandiosely with a historical re-enactmentby the Inguardia Re- enactors and Duke of Argyll’s Own Pipe Band marching around Valletta. NOTTE BIANCA RED CARPET Venue: Freedom Square Time: All Night Long Freedom Square will be hosting an elegant red carpet event starting at 19.00. Come by and take your photos surrounded by all the glitz and glam. BELLOPHONE Venue: Independence Square Time: All Night Long This year Notte Bianca is proud to present the Bellophone; an innovative project which will allow you to play the bells of Valletta! A collaboration between sound designer Mario Sammut, engineers and the Valletta communities has brought us one of the most innovative projects ever programmed for Notte Bianca. Set up in Independence Square, the Bellophone is a large-scale instrument incorporating two Valletta church bell towers - those of the Anglican and the Carmelite churches - and a state-of-the-art playing console. The console features a playing board, similar to a keyboard of a piano in function, but instead of keys it has large round buttons, which when pressed will ring the bells in the towers wirelessly. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for you to be able to play the bells of two churches simultaneously. For more info please visit: http://www.bellophone.org/ ELECTROSTRAIT Venue: Strait Street Time: All Night Long Throughout the night Strait Street will be having a ball, specifically an electroswing ball introduced by 1920s style flapper girls. Electro-Swing Malta will be pumping out the best tunes in this exciting novel genre, which blends vintage swing with contemporary production techniques. Don your finest duds and swing, swing, swing. TBERFIL TATTOO Venue: Republic Square Time: 19.00 – 00.00 Get some ink! But not just any ink. This year Notte Bianca has commissioned tattoo artist Charlot Seychell to design tattoos based on traditional Maltese tberfil by John Farrugia. Tberfil is an elegant local typography that can traditionally be seen on vintage Maltese buses and luzzi (Maltese fishing boats). So come visit our tattooist at Pjazza Regina and don’t miss this opportunity to get inked the Maltese way. The non-permanent kind will also be available. ŻIFFAŻFIN Venue: Old Market Place Time: 19.30 – 00.30 Dance the night away! On an elevated stage at the Suq tal-Belt we are going to be having a dance expo with a twist, featuring some of the best dance troupes on the island. Imagine line dancing to Maltese oldies, fiery flamenco to marċi funebri, oriental dance to local Għana and much more. This is fusion dancing like you will have never seen. Join this talented young ensemble for what promises to be a great energetic performance. The Malta Youth Orchestra is the ‘sister ensemble’ of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and is made up of talented young musicians. The target aim of the MYO is to provide an excellent opportunity for budding musicians to gain first-hand experience playing in an orchestra and, more importantly, to participate in the joy of ensemble music-making. L-GĦANA L-KBIRA Venue: Great Siege Square Time: 19.00, 21.30 Għana is the music of the Maltese people and a tradition that needs to be passed on from generation to generation. This special concert will see four of our finest għanneja singing with a backing band of over fifty guitar students. • The Impacts of Valletta 2018 on the Tourism Sector: Malta Tourism
THE IMPACT OF VALLETTA 2018 ON THE TOURISM SECTOR ."-5"5063*4."65)03*5: Tania Sultana with Ramona Saliba INTRODUCTION This research study attempts to measure the impact of Valletta 2018 on the tourism sector in Malta. This report is divided into four sections. Part 1 focuses on Malta’s tourism performance covering the period 2015 to 2018. The figures are based on the latest available ofcial statistics as at 7th November 2018. Part 2 provides a detailed explanation of the impact of Valletta 2018 on tourism performance. The impact assessment primarily looks at tourists’ awareness levels of the event followed by tourism activity generated directly by Valletta 2018, i.e., the number of tourists attracted to Malta and the resulting guest nights and tourist expenditure generated. The estimates are mainly based on indicators originating from continuous surveys carried out by the MTA, namely the Traveller Survey and the Heritage Locality Survey. Part 3 looks at the relevance of ‘culture’ as a pull factor for tourists visiting Malta. The methodology adopted allows for the diferentiation between tourists who are ‘greatly motivated’ by culture and those who are only ‘motivated in part’. Part 4 focuses on tourism activity in Valletta namely visitor flows, sites and attractions visited and visitor impressions of Valletta. This section also looks at the profile of tourists who opt to stay in accommodation establishments in Valletta. The concluding remarks at the end of the report provide a short synthesis of the main findings. FINDINGS Overview of Tourism Performance A buoyant inbound tourism performance was recorded during the period 2015 to 2018 where all the main indicators – inbound tourists, tourist guest nights and tourist expenditure – recorded significant growth rates.

Congratulations to Ms. Ellul Sciberras on her appointment and her commencement of work from the Consulate-General, after successfully clearing the mandatory period of quarantine upon arrival in Melbourne. Members of the public calling in at our office in Melbourne will still be attended to by appointment only. At this momentous time, speaking about globalisation and the eradication of borders is merely a rapidly evolving reality which is affecting each and every one of us. In this regard, the significance of being Maltese takes a universal dimension, not only because it is supposed to be so, but more so because it has always been like that and what we are doing now is the result of past decisions which we need to understand, appreciate, and use to move forward. Being Maltese is foremost because we are citizens of the world, and are citizens of the world because we happen to be connected to a cultural reality which in our case is Malta. The Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs is inviting you to fill in the following questionnaire ahead of the 1st Virtual Youth Forum, which aims to connect by sharing of ideas to be able to build a better future together.

  • MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 7 January 2018 1
MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 7 January 2018 1 MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 7 January 2018 Annual Festivals & Traditions The Maltese Islands have a number of religious festivities and cultural events that take place every year. Feast days are the life of the Islands and some holy days are actually national holidays, such as the feast of Santa Marija in mid-August. Others, such as the harvest festival of Mnarja at the end of June, are steeped in folklore. However, the most important events to all villages are their individual festas, honouring their parish patron saint. Religious holidays, such as Christmas and Easter, are highly celebrated, with the traditional festivities that go along with them. As families tend to be quite close-knit, the holidays are a time to strengthen the sense of community as well as reinforce family bonds. Church services play a large role during this time of year and during the Holy Week of Easter, many flock to the churches in great numbers for the‘seven visits', the visit of seven churches, to pay homage to the Altars of Repose. The festive commemorations are also a time of food, drink and merriment which brings out the Mediterranean roots of the locals. Families prepare large Christmasand Easter lunches; giving thanks for all that they have with their relatives. During these festas the streets are lined with carts, selling a wide assortment of differentfoods as well as the more traditional sweets and delicacies. Introduced relatively recently, cultural events such as the Malta Fireworks Festival, the Malta International Arts Festival, Notte Bianca, the Malta Jazz Festival , the Malta World Music Festival and Mediterranea in Gozo are becoming traditions in their own right.

  • Valletta, Our Capital City
VALLETTA, OUR CAPITAL CITY A CITY BUILT BY GENTLEMEN FOR GENTLEMEN The story of Malta's capital is inextricably linked with the island's mythology – after laying Valletta's foundation stone in 1566 the Knights of St John created an elegant baroque city from an arid, empty peninsula. But, don’t imagine that it’s just a relic of the past. Behind the foreboding fortifications you’ll find a living city that still has plenty of stories to tell, home to ground breaking contemporary architecture, delicious cuisine and a thriving nightlife scene. Valletta – built by the Knights of St John on a peninsula that's only 1km by 600m. Its founder decreed that it should be 'a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen', and it retains its 16th-century elegance. It may be small, but it's packed full of sights; when Unesco named Valletta a World Heritage Site, it described it as 'one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world'. The Renzo Piano–designed City Gate, Parliament Building and Opera House have changed the cityscape and galvanised it into life. These sights, along with Valletta's status as European Capital of Culture for 2018, have seen the city reborn, with new museums, restored golden-stone fortresses, and new hotels, bars and restaurants in converted 16th-century mansions. VALLETTA A VERY IMPORTANT CAPITAL CITY THESE DAYS.. EU Presidency 2017 is a big year for Malta as the island takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union together with Netherlands and Slovakia. The European Presidency programme takes place over 18 months, and is split into three successive presidencies known as Presidency Trios.
