The data have been obtained and XML-annotated using the Python program- ming language and the libraries lyricsmas- ter/yattag. The corpus has been preprocessed and basic statistical data have been gener- ated by the XSL transformation. The diacritic restoration has been carried out in the Slovo Majstor and LeXimir tools (the latter appli- cation has also been used for generating the frequency analysis). The extraction of socio- cultural topics has been performed using the Unitex software, whereas the prevailing top- ics have been visualised with the TreeCloud software. KEYWORDS: corpus linguistics, Yugoslav rock and roll, web scraping, natural language processing, text mining. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies.

This paper shows implementation of storage and information retrieval used in digitization project Behind Rockovnik [1] dedicated to the history of rock and roll culture in former Yugoslavia from 1958-2000. This project was motivated by previous work of Dušan Vesić and Sandra Rančić, such as the 40 epi- sode TV show “Rockovnik” (Radio Television of Serbia) and their published books, articles and movies. Keywords. Digitization, popular culture, multimedia database. 1. Introduction During Cold War, the most profoundly influential music in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union has been rock 'n' roll. [2]. Rock music in Yugoslavia has reflected rock trends worldwide. All the major styles witnessed in the West were also replicated in Yugoslavia [3]. Yet president Tito personally considered early on what stance to take regarding rock music, and in contrast to other East European chairmen, chose tolerance for and limited acceptance of rock mu- sic's rebellious form of expression [4]. Rock and roll cultural heritage in former Yugoslavia consists of tangible objects of value, but also intangible entities such as music, dance, skills, fashion, practices, associated cultural spaces that groups and some individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. Lack of care and oblivion of those objects and entities would be a huge loss for people, future audience and science. Our multimedia database is one way to protect that heritage against loss and to provide public access with straightforward user interface.

Serbia, Montenegro & Croatia Tuesday - Day 1 A leisurely 4.30pm departure gave us plenty of time to get to the airport. The usual pre- boarding champagne was a welcome respite from a hectic few weeks (this seems to be the norm these days). We were top deck on the A380 and have decided this is the way to travel whenever the opportunity arises. So quiet, so much legroom, so few people in the cabin. After a couple of hours layover in Singapore we board a jam packed 747 for the 12½ flight to Frankfurt. Another layover of 5 hours before our connection to Belgrade. All in all, our trip is 36 hours door to door. It’s now Wednesday morning... - Day 2 Reason for this trip: Dave has an AIMS board meeting in Belgrade on Friday/Saturday this week. We’ve arrived Wednesday to give us a full day to recover and have a look around Belgrade. The flight from Frankfurt to Belgrade is a little under 2 hours, with stunning views over the alps along the way. As we commence our descent into Belgrade, the landscape is covered with snow – in fact, there is snow as far as the eye can see to the east. I assume this is the northern parts of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. The snow becomes less thick on the ground but is still prevalent as we land in Belgrade, just south of the city. We are met at the airport by Milan, who drives us to our hotel, the Moskva (Moscow). The view from our 4th floor room shows a very eastern European city and there is plenty of snow on the ground.

The Music of the National Liberation Struggle and Social Engagement Ana Hofman and Martin Pogačar They kept trying to smother the songs of resistance, but they did not smother them, ever, nor the spark of resistance, which was constantly smouldering here and there and burst into a flame of rebellion. (Hercigonja and Karakljajić 1962) Any interpretation of the past can only be a dissonant and dynamic, always political and without doubt a performative process. This spurs the emergence of and competition between alternative interpretations of the past that may also be understood as acts of opposition and even resistance to dominant and/or competing narratives. This is particu- larly clear when references to particular historical periods or events are problematised in daily political struggles and media discourses: recourse to alternate histories or the search for alternative visions of the past can thus be regarded as an attempt to devise a potential con- ceptual framework within which an articulation of alternative politics 21 (visions of the future) is possible. This carries with it certain (political) connotations that in the post-Yugoslav context are powered by the his- torical experience and perpetual reinterpretations of the national lib- eration struggle and antifascist resistance, as well as the entire period of socialist Yugoslavia – these periods have notably defined Yugoslav and contemporary social, (pop) cultural and political milieux, and the responses to it. In this essay, we discuss the shifting meanings and ascribed in- terpretations of the historical experience of the Yugoslav antifascist resistance as expressed through music. In an attempt to encourage this reflection on the musical expressions of the partisan resistance from a historical perspective, we primarily analyse scholarly works and media discourses and combine historical, musicological and cultural studies approaches.
