  • 11 August 2015 There Are Places That Are Known for Being
11 August 2015 There are places that are known for being producing some of the greatest sportspersons this world has ever seen. In India itself, the city of Mumbai is known for two of India’s greatest cricketers in Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. But when it comes to the ancient Indian sport of kabaddi, Haryana takes that particular mantle. Kabaddi, not yet recognised as an Olympic sport, has been played at the Asian level with India dominating it at the Asian Games since it was first played at Beijing in 1990. This has strengthened its roots especially in the rural areas and the sport being known as –‘hamari maati ka khel’ is now fast gaining popularity all over the country owing to the creation of an action packed and entertaining format in Star Sports Pro Kabaddi. With names like Manjeet Chhillar (captain of Bengaluru Bulls) and Mohit Chhillar (a defender from U Mumba) grabbing the headlines in the sports pages with their thrilling performances and breath-taking tackles, these men and other players who also come from the state of Haryana and participate in Star Sports Pro Kabaddi have put their state on the sports map of India. While there is a need for organisation of the sport especially at the grass root level, this hasn’t affected the huge pool of talent that is unearthed every year with the allure of Star Sports Pro Kabaddi encouraging more fresh faces to join the sport. Taking one village as an example in Nizampur on the outskirts of Delhi and household names like Manjeet Chhillar, Anup Kumar (captain of U Mumba) and even Rakesh Kumar (Patna Pirates) are just a few of the many kabaddi players who can boast of being from Nizampur.

Bobby was the youngest of eight children who were all born in Nadi in the Western part of Fiji. His Father was a local schoolteacher and that his Mother had worked very hard to maintain a home for the children. Their plight was not uncommon, but definitely not easy, in some instances failing to make ends meet, but what the family may have lacked in material wealth, they had certainly made up for in strong fam- ily virtues. Bobby said that his beloved Father was a very ambitious man, and with his Mother being very hard working, they strived to instill those values into his siblings. 21 August 15 Bengaluru Bulls led by the indefatigable all-rounder Manjeet Chillar edged Telugu Titans 39-38 to seal the first spot in the finals of the second season of the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi. In what seemed to be a one-sided affair in favour of the Bulls, till about five minutes left on the clock the first play-off of the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi League came alive with the Titans coming back into the match with three super tackles and their star raider Rahul Chaudhari striking super form. There was a sudden urgency in their play and while the stadium reflected a sense of disappointment in their loss, there was delight in seeing them going down with a fight. The full- house at the Dome @ SVP, NSCI really had their monies worth. Bengaluru yet again showed that they had it in them to stave off the late challenge from their rivals. Manjit and Dharamaraj who too had a superb match took the onus on themselves to deny Rahul Chaudhari a free rein during the last two raids. They blocked Rahul and did not allow him to raid deep and score more than one point. It was their sacrifice and on the spur decisions which finally clinched for Bengaluru their maiden entry into the finals. The first half belonged to the winners as they inflicted an all-out to lead 15-10 towards the fag end of the first half. They had a lead of 16-10 at the break. It was Manjeet’s all-round play (4 raid points and 1 bonus), which really put the Bulls in the driver’ seat.

  • Telugu Titans Take on Champions U Mumba in The
29 January 16 *Telugu Titans take on champions U Mumba in the opening tie *Dabang Delhi flex muscles against Bengaluru Bulls Vishakhapttanam, January 29: As the curtain goes up to unveil Season 3 of the now popular Star Sports Pro Kabaddi League at the Rajeev Gandhi Sports Complex here, the opener promises to be a lip smacking affair with defending champions U Mumba, looking formidable as ever taking on a well prepared Telugu Titans on home turf. The second match tomorrow night will pit Dabang Delhi who missed the semis last season versus Bengaluru Bulls. The latter are in the process of rebuilding after a big exodus of stars who had challenged the might of U Mumba in the last finals at Mumbai. U Mumba having E Bhaskaran, a hard task master as their coach will be a fit side after their long drawn conditioning camp in Kerala. Add to that the genius of their ‘captain cool’ Anup Kumar and the stable combination they have evolved over last two years with Shabbir Bapu Sharfudeen the man with the Midas touch as one of their mainstays. Wasn’t he responsible in turning the tables on the Bengaluru Bulls, with that swift move to decide the title? They have an all-rounder Rishank Devadiga, the do-or-die raid specialist, two good corner men in Surendar Nada and Mohit Chillar and the ever reliable old war-horse Jeeva Kumar bolstering the defence. U Mumba have also strengthened their attacking arsenal by adding former India captain Rakesh Kumar who was with the Patna Pirates.
