Bobby was the youngest of eight children who were all born in Nadi in the Western part of Fiji. His Father was a local schoolteacher and that his Mother had worked very hard to maintain a home for the children. Their plight was not uncommon, but definitely not easy, in some instances failing to make ends meet, but what the family may have lacked in material wealth, they had certainly made up for in strong fam- ily virtues. Bobby said that his beloved Father was a very ambitious man, and with his Mother being very hard working, they strived to instill those values into his siblings. Though born in Fiji, Bobby does not have many memories in general of that part of his life since moving to Los Angeles with the rest of his family in 1973. Continue Page 4

THE US FIJI TIMES August 2019 Vol. 182 THE US FIJI TIMES 7 Local News A FIJI BORN IN HOLLYWOOD With Los Angeles being the capital of the Global Film In- dustry, Bobby, who has been President/CEO of Source Film Studios for over 25 years, first found himself on the backs of many of kinds of those studios when he was 12 years old. “At 18, I became a stage manager and went on to eventually work to light the sets and was also a gaffer on many music videos productions in the 80’s and 90’s, which included top international artists such as NWA, Madonna and Michael Jackson to name a few”. Bobby then decided to leave freelancing around the time his daughter was born and also during that time, he had ac- quired all the experience and had established the right con- nections to open up his own business, which began from garage, and it was then that his company Source Lighting be- gan business. “It was the first of many ven- tures for me, and the company sought to provide lighting and gear for the entertainment me- dium, but the most memorable and more notable contributions was on the feature film Titanic, which was filmed in Baja, Mexico, where I then added mobile power generators for location movie productions to my business, which ultimately led to launching Source Film Studios” Being a Green Screen Studio in the center of Hollywood, Source Film Studios has also done work with clients such as Google, Apple, McDonalds and American Idol to name a few. The studio has a 50′ by 65′ foot Solar Array on its roof which generates most of the power that they use and in fact on some days, they would even generate power back to the grid. With the Film Production highly regarded as a top end industry, Bobby adds that “It’s important for our youths to un- derstand that it’s not just hard work, or education, or net- working, but it’s the myriad of all the components that have to come together for success, and that we have to take our chanc- es and follow our dreams, no matter what they are and re- member to always be true to yourself and be the best ver- sion of you and nothing less”.
