Studies on Coastal Geomorphology Along Visakhapatnam to Bhimunipatnam, East Coast of India M
J. Ind. Geophys. Union ( October 2012 ) Vol.16, No.4, pp. 179-187 Studies on Coastal Geomorphology along Visakhapatnam to Bhimunipatnam, East Coast of India M. Jagannadha Rao, Greeshma Gireesh A.G., P. Avatharam1, N.C. Anil2 and T. Karuna Karudu Delta Studies Institute, 1Dept of Geology, 2Dept. of Geo-Engineering, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. ABSTRACT An attempt has been made to study and record the diverse coastal geomorphic features along Visakhapatnam – Bhimunipatnam coast. The study area is marked by geomorphic features resulted from various coastal and land ward processes. The geomorphic units under different heads namely, features formed by present day wave action, features formed due to sea level oscillations and features formed by rock and sea water interaction have been presented. The influence of sea level oscillations and land and sea interaction forms a diverse coastal geomorphology along the coast. The details of features such as beach, dune system, inter tidal deposits, red sediments, wave cut platform, marine terrace, sea stack, sea cave, serpent hood structures, promontories, wind gap and natural bridge have been recorded and the formation as well as significance of their occurrence are presented. The coastal geomorphology of the study area clearly established not only the sea level oscillations but also variations in climatic conditions in this part of the coast. INTRODUCTION PHYSIOGRAPHY Coastal geomorphology by definition is the study of The study area is characterized by Eastern Ghat the morphological development and evolution of the mobile belt. This area covered with denudational coast as it acts under the influence of winds, waves, hills of range between 30 to 594m above mean currents and sea level changes. -

I. Sea Turtle Conservation in 2020 VSPCA Has Entered Its 24Th Year Of
1 Ó VSPCA I. Sea Turtle Conservation in 2020 VSPCA has entered its 24th year of protection and conservation of the Olive ridley sea turtle via its Community-Based Protection Program, which covers Visakha Coastal Urban Beach - a length/distance of 60 kms along Andhra Pradesh’s shoreline. This proJect erects 5 hatcheries along these beaches safeguarding sea turtle habitat: Muthayalapalem Beach to R. K. Beach; from Jodugullupalem to Uppada and then covering the Peddanagayapalem Beaches. What started in 1996 as an observation is now a program attracting conservationists and NGOs world-wide to it. The sea turtle conservation team has become known for their empathy, originality, compassion and commitment to the program. VSPCA’s Founder, Pradeep Kumar Nath scoured magazines like the National Geographic and scientific papers to comprehend this endangered species of turtle. He observed the very difficult conditions under which mother sea turtles make their way onto Visakhapatnam’s beaches to nest. They face peril and death from many types of predators and obstacles (human, non-human and nonliving): from the fisherfolk poaching turtles, to the eagles & crabs hovering for fresh kill, and beach dogs digging up the newly-laid eggs; from the fishing boat nets to industrialized trawlers destroying sea turtles as by-catch; from oil leaks, sand-mining, pollution, soot, dangerous articles and chemicals on beaches. Yet Olive ridleys are instinctually guided to these beaches! Thus began, what is now a 24-year journey from quest to learn about this species and its role in our coastline, to -> profoundly serious protectionary work to save and conserve the Endangered Olive ridley! Annually, these resilient beings make these beaches their significant-sporadic nesting grounds: with particular reference to the eastern Naval Coastal Battery, all the way to the VUDA beach. -

Rockpools at Visakhapatnam coast are categorized into supra - littoral, mid - littoral and sub- littoral depending on the tidal level. The intertidal region of Visakhapatnam is composed of numerous rockpools of varying dimensions and topographical conditions. The community composition of the rockpools represents the following taxonomic groups such as sponges, coelenterates, isopods, amphipods, crabs, tanaids, gastropods, echinoderms and fishes. A survey has been made on the spatial distribution of macrofauna and macroalgae associated fauna. Both fauna and flora are identified at generic level. During the course of the study the abundance of organisms are recorded for selected pools. The results obtained from the study showed that these environmental conditions gave the specific faunistic features for individual pools. Keywords: Biota, Physiography, Rockpools, Visakhapatnam 1. Introduction Till now there are no studies in the country on the Rock pools are conspicuous ecosystems of the rocky community composition of rockpools.
