GSNC Hispanic Heritage Month Patch Challenge Hispanic Heritage Month Patch Challenge This patch program is designed to help Girl Scouts of all cultures develop an understanding and appreciation of the Hispanic/Latino culture. To earn this patch: Daisy Girl Scouts: Complete the word search, and two activities from the list below. Brownie Girl Scouts: Complete the word search, and two activities from the list below. Junior Girl Scouts: Complete Famous Latina Girl Scouts scramble and three activities from the list below. Cadette Girl Scouts: Complete Famous Latina Matching and three activities from the list below. Senior Girl Scouts: Complete five activities from the list. Ambassador Girl Scouts: Complete five activities from the list. 1. Find some information on the Latin American Continents, some examples below: a. Thirty-two years after that first performance, on May 4, 2018, this seminal work premiered on Malpaso Dance Company in Cuba. A new work by company member Beatriz Garcia Diaz will also be on the program, set to music by the Italian composer Ezio Bosso. There is a strong emphasis on proper hand technique and proper feel of the styles studied. Styles: Son, Son Montuno, Guaracha, Mambo, Mozambique, Conga de Comparsa, Guaguanco, Bembe, Pilon. Most of the styles are learned from the perspective of the congas with bongos, timbales, and güiro as accompaniment instruments. We will also study samba and samba reggae from Brazil. Grading is based on attendance (20%), performance and participation in class (20%), one concert report (20%), and one final exam (40%). Final exam will be taken according to the final exam schedule issued by the university. Practice: There are three congas in CTV G128 at all times available for practice. Once the class roster is finalized other congas can be checked out through the music operations office. Listening: There are many resources available. I suggest Spotify, Youtube and Pandora.     Cuban Patterns for Kit Cascara is a stick pattern derived from the rumba, and can be used in many situations such as Mambo, Salsa, Latin Jazz etc. I play the pattern on the cymbal while replicating the sound of the congas on the rim click and toms. This is a very useful pattern and often used to portray a generic Cuban sound. Guaguanco pronounced “Wah-wahn-co”, is one of the styles of Cuban rumba and has a very distinct conga pattern, which I play between the floor and high toms with the left hand while the right hand plays the clave on side of the floor tom. Guaguanco with Cascara Songo became to popularity in the 70’s, and has incorporated elements from folkloric to funk. In the following written example the bass drum strokes in brackets are optional. In the played version the right hand plays the cymbals, while I move the left hand pattern around the toms. Mozambique is derived from the Cuban carnival rhythm called Comparsa. There are two versions, the original created by Pedro Izquierdo, which I’ll call Cuban Mozambique, and version played by Eddie Palmieri in the 60’s called NY Mozambique. We'll start with the Cuban Mozambique. Here is a tom application of a bell pattern commonly used in the Mozambique. The left had plays the clave on the rim-click of the snare, while the bell pattern is played on the toms with the right hand, however if preferred this can be reversed. Now for the NY version. The great Elvin Jones liked to use this type of pattern.

Size and Population: The country is 42,804 square miles with 2,100 miles of coastline. It is slightly smaller than Pennsylvania. The population of Cuba is estimated at 11,308,764 as of July 2004. Geography and Climate: The Cuban mainland is the largest and westernmost island of the West Indies. About 90 miles south of Florida, Cuba consists of one large island and more than 1,600 smaller ones. With towering mountains and rolling hills covering a quarter of the country, the rest consists of mainly gentle slopes and grasslands. The fertile soil is primarily red clay and provides rich farmlands for crops and pastures. The heavy forests, consisting mainly of pine trees, exist in the southeast. There are over 200 rivers and streams in Cuba, but most are not navigable. Among the 200 harbors, two important ones are at the capital, Havana, on the north coast and at the U.S. controlled Guantánamo Bay on the south coast. Cuba has a semi-tropical climate and breezes keep the island mild throughout the year. Temperatures range from 70° F in the winter to 80° F in the summer. The country’s dry season lasts from November to April and during the remaining wet season certain areas can get up to 54 inches of annual rain. Strong hurricanes often hit the islands during the fall months. Background and History: In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba and claimed it for Spain.
