Qualified midwife (and ex-student), Anna Humphrey talking to Year 11 about birth for their GCSE Child Development examination

Visit by Anna Humphrey Midwife Anna Humphrey, qualified midwife visited Year 11 as part of their work on labour and birth. She shared her experience of working in a busy hospital maternity unit. She outlined some of the problems that can occur, for example when a baby is born not breathing; she explained the procedure of resuscitation and how it helps a baby breath on its own.

Anna has a life experience of helping deliver babies in Africa. She spoke about the difficulties of delivering babies with no running water or electricity and only an old-fashioned ear trumpet (pinnard) to listen to the foetal heartbeat, while goats ran around at her feet.

By Mrs H Young The Fashion Show of 2018 In need of fashion inspiration? Look no further than our very own Great Marlow Fashion Show; now displaying the creative talents of Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. After a year of preparation the Textile’s Department’s finest stars took to the catwalk to model this year’s fashion-forward creations.

With an aim of achieving looks that were creative, challenging and interesting, each student was required to think outside the box, while ensuring that quality was maintained under the time restraint. Months of commitment and care had been poured into each creation and, with the problem of steadily nearing deadline, the pressure was on.

With inspiration from the Victoria and Albert Exhibition and Disney (a theme which brought everyone’s childhood obsession to the forefront), it was safe to say that every design would be unique. Incredible talent was on display with each student taking a different approach to the stylistic challenge.

With the arrival of the big day, everyone’s hard work paid off and this year’s show has been quoted as being, “The best one in 6 years”- a compliment which reflects the students’ long-standing effort and dedication to the project.

The Year 10s’ catering skills were also on display, as they provided a mouth-watering buffet for the spectators to enjoy.

Each model shone like the brightest of stars and every student’s design proved to present the audience with the best of Great Marlow’s artistic talent. We can’t wait for next year!

By Louisa Glen Bramley: Sixth Form Correspondent History GCSE Trip to Kenilworth Castle

The History Department took the Year 10 GCSE History cohort to visit Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire at the start of July. Kenilworth Castle is the historical site investigation which is examined as part of their Castle Form and Function module. This unit investigates a different historic environment each year, focusing on how it has changed over time, its links to historical events and its functions at different times in its history. As part of the trip the students received a guided tour of the site by English Heritage staff. In these expert-led sessions, the students learnt about various aspects of castle life, battle tactics, and the site’s development from a Norman keep and medieval fortress into an Elizabethan palace and architectural love letter. Remains of the Great Hall By Mrs S Bullock - Head of Department

Year 7 Castle Competition During the summer term the Year 7 students designed and built castles using household items. The students worked individually or in pairs to produce some amazing castles; some had explanatory booklets and others pictures to show how hard they worked on their project. The castles ranged from classic Remains of the Great Hall English, Welsh and Scottish castles to Japanese inspired castles. The History Department, Mr Ford and Miss King spent much of the day judging over seventy castles and we managed to create a shortlist of finalists:

Erin Kelly & Colette Fitzpatrick, Alex Lanyon, Jeigh Pankhurst, Alana Ray, Emz Spooner, Amelie Holder, Tré Jacobs, James Hudson, Peyton Nugent & Sarrah Dean, Harrison Taggart & Sal Dunn, Joe Legerton, Emmalene Gentry & Poppy Ungar, Christina Baxter & Lauren Hudson, Euan Milne & Blossom Martin, Gabriella Dover

Overall, 21 students achieved the Bronze Award, 8 students the Silver Award and 2 students achieved the Gold Award. Special mentions have to go to Ben Brzezicki in Year 8, who achieved a Gold Award and Isaac Grottrup in Year 7 who achieved a Silver Award and was best in his year group. However, an extra special recommendation has to go to Weronika Naks in Year 8 who not only was the best in her year group by achieving the Gold Award, but was also the Best in School. She was so successful that she managed to get through to the next round of the challenge; only about 5000 students in the country achieved this. We would like to congratulate all of our students who participated in the Junior Maths Challenge this year and to those in particular who achieved an award, but once again, to Ben, Isaac and Weronika for their remarkable achievements as well.

Music Music at GMS goes from strength to strength It has been a busy term in the music department.

Our annual summer concert was held on the 11th July in the school hall featuring performances from students in KS3 and 4. Judging by the amount of people who attended it was, once again, very well received. We were so proud of all the students who took part.

Congratulations to Charley Lawrence, Year 9, who performed for our Celebration of Success evening with her rendition of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ by Eva Cassidy. Charley also won the KS3 Music award at Celebration of Success for her outstanding work in music and her performance in the GMS production of “Into the Woods”.

We look forward to continued success for our students in the music department next term, and with the collaboration of the drama department for our Christmas production of “We Will Rock You” in December.

In the Rocket Fuel Car show, students were allowed hands on experience in building cars to streamline them, make them an optimum weight, to be able to reduce friction, while making the vehicles look cool!

One student said, “From this really fun day, the thing I enjoyed the most was the construction of the rocket fuel car and seeing which one would go the furthest!” Of course, the boys from Great Marlow won our round.

All who attended the trip truly represented Great Marlow School perfectly, showing engagement and enthusiasm from beginning to end.

Mr K Shea and Miss Bawden would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making the STEM day so enjoyable.

We will surely return next year to participate in such a fantastically educational day away from the classroom!

Staff are due to take 182 students to the rewards trip activity centre in King’s Langley, where they will complete to Phasels fun-filled teambuilding activities while enjoying the great outdoors. This follows a hugely successful, additional Wood overnight camping trip which many students enjoyed at the beginning of June, which involved homemade pizza, songs around the campfire and some hearty exercise! Ran with the intention of preparing students for Duke of Edinburgh applications and expeditions in Year 9, we are hopeful of fostering some future explorers in our midst!

I continue to be impressed by the resourcefulness and resilience that the Year 8 cohort have especially demonstrated this term, and look forward to seeing them develop further as they progress into Year 9.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the last couple of years and I have many fond memories of an excellent year group. They seem to enjoy their school life, because so many participate in the many activities Great Marlow School offers. At the time of writing, we are finalising the preparations for the PGL trip, which is a lovely way to celebrate the end of KS3 for the students. In addition, we are planning for the Parents’ Assembly, when I will have the opportunity to inform you how these events went. This term has been very much about finishing Year 9 in a positive way, while preparing for Year 10. The World Cup has been embraced: each form sings the National Anthem of a country involved in the tournament, given to them in a random draw. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to their renditions: (or not in some cases!) It has been good fun, as the students have joined in with the light-heartedness of it all. The results of the best singing forms will be announced in the Parents’ Assembly. Doing this activity has reminded me how important the role of the form tutor is, because they facilitate competitions like this, which does relieve the pressure on the students for a while. I take this opportunity to thank the parents and carers of Year 9. You have been so incredibly supportive and this has been the key to the success of the year group. I have enjoyed becoming better acquainted with you all; the confidence you give by supporting me in the way you do has been brilliant. The co-operation of the Parent Focus Group has been a great help, while the Parent Twilights have offered an opportunity to meet in a different forum to Parents’ Evenings. I genuinely will miss working with the students, but I know they are in the safest of hands with Miss Tuddenham and I wish them all success, in KS4. Next year my role is to guide Year 8 and I am looking forward to the challenge of building up rapport with the students, parents and carers of this year group: be assured, I will use the expertise gained from working with all of you and your children to better inform my work with the next group. Thank You

MOCK EXAMS

The Year 10 students completed their mock exam process on Thursday 28th June following a gruelling two weeks of examinations. The mock process is vital in driving motivation forward and in ensuring the students understand the challenge of revising for multiple examinations as well as how to manage themselves in such a formal setting. The form tutors have been instrumental in supporting their tutees to ensure nerves and exam stress was at a healthy minimum. The whole process ran smoothly and the Year 10 students have made me very proud as their Director of Learning in the manner in which they have conducted themselves during this period.

YEAR 10 PREFECTS

The Year 10 prefect selection was completed at the end of April and culminated in a fabulous prefect assembly on the 4th May, where, parents were able to celebrate their children’s success in being awarded this very important position within the school. Held in the very pleasant surroundings of the 6th form centre, the students were called up one by one to be awarded their prefect tie. The morning was very successful with many proud parents and delighted students and with the only challenge of the morning being how to tie a proper tie!

Since joining the prefect team the students have already been key in supporting Year 8 parents evening and received extremely positive feedback regarding how well they conducted themselves. Further to this the prefects have performed exceptionally in the Year 6 intake day, receiving superb compliments regarding the support they provided on the day. YEAR 10 OXBRIDGE VISIT BY CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY

A small selection of the highest attaining Year 10 students were chosen to attend a very special meeting with a representative of Cambridge University. Normally reserved for Year 12 students, the Year 10 students were provided with this fabulous opportunity to join Year 12 in a meeting, which would motivate and drive the students towards attaining the highest possible grades in the build up to their final GCSE year. The visit was designed to discuss the Oxbridge application process and for the students to get a real understanding of life at an Oxbridge University. Feedback from the Year 10 students was extremely positive and contributed well to the discussion.

Year 11

It was with great pride that we sent our Year 11 students off for a long summer break after successfully completing their GCSE exams and leaving Great Marlow. We look forward to seeing them all on Results Day 2018 and know that many will return to our 6th Form.

GCSE EXAMS

Our Year 11 students demonstrated an excellent attitude to learning throughout their exam season and were a real credit to the school. Attendance of GCSE exams was exceptional demonstrating our students’ hard work, resilience and responsibility.

YEAR 11 LEAVERS’

Leavers’ day was a very busy and important day for Great Marlow School. All Year 11 students sat their GCSE English Literature exam in the morning before being treated to an ice lolly whilst the main hall was set up for the final assembly. Students were shown a presentation of old school photos and a video with a farewell from each form tutor with a final goodbye from Miss Tuddenham and Mr Ford.

YEAR 11 PROM

160 of our Year 11 students attended the Prom at Adams Park, High Wycombe on Friday the 22nd June. All of our students made a huge effort with their smart suits and beautiful dresses and arrived in style in various forms of luxury transport. The students conducted themselves responsibly throughout the evening whilst thoroughly enjoying the event.

SWIMMING

GMS took part in two swimming gala’s this term against Pipers Corner and Borlase. It was great to see how talented more of our students are, with many giving up mornings and afternoons to train. Gala 1 saw the junior team take 1st place, with notable performances from Becky Haywood in backstroke and Tori Mann in butterfly. The inters finished in 2nd position, behind SWB, with Max Bourne winning 2 of his races.

Gala 2 saw the introduction of 5 new swimmers to the team and 2nd place finishes for both squads. Becky Haywood picked up 5 wins out of 5, and Maisie Goodbolt and Alex Quinn won their races in butterfly and freestyle respectively. Excellent effort by all involved; the swim team are looking forward to some more galas next year and the prospect of personalised GMS swimming hats….
